Advice Wanted - Everyones Welcome My girlfriend cannot find a job and it is killing me
My (28M) girlfriend (24F) and I have been together for a few years. It’s a very stable, committed relationship, and we have lived together for two years now. For the last two years, she has been desperately searching for a full time job. Hundreds of applications in wide ranging positions. Finally, she got hired last year for a job that only last a few months before the whole company shut down. Her first promising lead in a while just lead to a rejection after multiple rounds of interviews. She’s not unqualified for these jobs. She has a bachelors degree in the field, and has some good (but shorter) experience in the field too.
This is not a post bitching about her or anything she’s doing, but about how awful this job market is. I feel so bad for her, and there’s really nothing I can do to help. Nothing I say can change the embarrassment she feels, or the pressure every time family or friends ask about it. She has been able to work part time to at least keep herself busy and to have some spending money.
Thankfully, my job is stable and pays well, so we are not in a situation where we are worried about paying bills. But this shit sucks. This job market sucks so bad, I cannot even imagine what this would be like without another persons income helping get by. What can I even do to help her feel like less of a piece of shit when she’s trying so hard to just get ANYTHING?
Dinner is loaded baked potato soup.
EDIT: To address some common comment themes:
She is already working part time, and has been the entire time she’s been looking for full time work. Also, money is not the issue thankfully. The problem is more of the absolute missile to her self esteem this whole process has been. She has been applying outside of her field too

Glad you're supporting her through this instead of blaming her. Because yes, the job market is terrible and many people will become victims to what is happening. Glad she is working part time at least. Seems like she's doing what she can possibly do here.

u/BeardedGlass Big Dill Energy 1h ago
Same happened to me and my wife. She had to work part-time for years because absolutely nowhere is hiring. She has a degree, years of experience, we even moved to try other cities.
The only way she was able to land a full-time job was when I recommended her. When a colleague at work suddenly left, my boss asked us to help in finding a replacement. Wife and I work in the same field and she was immediately hired then and there.
Connections and networking, getting in a word from someone already in the company, has definitely become (almost the only) way for someone to actually get hired now. It's horrible.

My wife and I almost sold our business and house to move to the other side of the country earlier this year but after really digging into the economics of it I’m so glad we didn’t because it would have been a colossal fuck up both of us trying to find new jobs in this market after a decade of business ownership. Sorry thing suck OP

It's a fucking bloodbath in marketing. AI cut through us like a hot knife, every CEO and CoO thinks they're god's gift to claude. I'm in the field, have been for around 6 or 7 years, and I'm searching for new opportunities, and it's ROUGH

u/SelfUnimpressed Leftover Lore Master 5h ago
Not really, not yet. In the last year, AI has gotten meaningfully better at basically three core things:
- Coding
- Writing
- Math
There are tons and tons of jobs (including mine! lol!) that are built on one or more of these things, and those jobs are getting blown up.
The thing is, AI is the worst it will ever be today, and it's coming for, like, all cognitive work, probably?
Good time to be a plumber.

Good time to be a plumber.
Seems to be easy replaceable by a robot, same as gardeners, roofers etc
I calculated these robots cant cost more than $20k, $30k, so not even a years salary.
I disagree with jobs getting blown up and all the negativity in this whole thread, there is always people who cant find jobs and now all of them are blaming AI so whats the actual truth about the job market? Do we even know ?
And no marketing is not getting replaced by AI. I ran my own agencies and know agencies currently doing 6 figures a month with just 2-3 people and they are young af. Like 20 and even younger and they are winning so many clients its crazy.

I'm fully employed in marketing. People without reading comprehension insure that it will remain that way for the foreseeable future. The opportunities are scarcer, but they aren't gone. Breaking in is difficult.

Have her look into public relations, specifically in spaces like Law, education, or medicine. That is some of the few industries where AI will have very little impact in the coming years, it’s what my girlfriend does

u/Blessed_Hedgehog8824 Girl Lurker 6h ago
Great advice! Public relations, public policy, corporate communications, those are all spaces where people still need to be present. Documentation specialists are also needed. It isn’t as glam as marketing, but the pay is good, and they still want traceability for the AI and the handful of people managing it…corporate responsibility for compliance.m and all that.

u/Seth_abides Gay Gourmet 5h ago
What's the pay like? (Yes, I could Google it but I'd rather hear from a real person.)
4
u/Blessed_Hedgehog8824 Girl Lurker 5h ago
Depends on the field. If I were looking, I’d look specifically at pharmaceuticals spaces. With a BA, I’d suggest specifically looking at companies like Veeva, a company that provides support to pharma—documentation support. Pays well, often offers remote work. I work in the SF Bay Area, so I have no concept of real-world salaries; everything here is Silicon Valley level. I think entry level is somewhere in the $70k-$80k range, but that’s purely a guesstimate. I actually work in Quality and Regulatory; I started in Marketing almost 20 years ago and transitioned to Regulatory 15 years ago, so I could be off.
1
u/medted22 Protein Prophet 5h ago
She’s early in career at like $75k, has 2 years of experience now and can probably bump to $95k pretty easily if she decides to take a different role. She’s still in like an associate position, most head roles look for 5-10 years of experience, she thinks her boss is probably 150-200k
1
u/Blessed_Hedgehog8824 Girl Lurker 4h ago
She could probably transition easily into it then at that rate. I don’t think she’d have to start low as a newbie in another field might.
1
u/Blessed_Hedgehog8824 Girl Lurker 3h ago
She should look at the field marketing manager roles at Veeva. They have a number of open roles listed on their website. I have a former colleague that worked there and loved it; it would look great on her resume if she could get her foot in the door there, and working in Life Sciences pays really well. The salary range posted is $65k-$115k for that particular position, and Veeva has a Work Anywhere policy; most of its positions have remote options. Have her at least take a look. I’m trying to point my husband in that direction, as well!😜
2
u/medted22 Protein Prophet 1h ago
That would be awesome, I’ll let her know. I’m in medical school currently and ideally she will need some flexibility during the later years of my schooling and residency because I will likely have to move around a bit. Thank you for the advice!

u/Blessed_Hedgehog8824 Girl Lurker 1h ago
Best of luck! I know that’s the biggest company supporting Pharma for Quality Management and Documentation Systems in the U.S. and the have a huge footprint. They’re always looking for good people, and marketing folks are especially valuable for what they do!

u/WhoElseSmellsToast Hungry man 6h ago
Rough industry to be in unfortunately. The pyramid (lots of junior staff, fewer mid-level, even fewer high-level) no longer really exists, so its very tough to get your foot in the door.
Do you think she'd have any aptitude for sales? At least in the companies I've worked for, theres often a chance to move laterally into a marketing role from sales, as they're so closely intertwined.
13
u/Cold-Metal-2737 BoyDinnerEnjoyer 6h ago

3
u/Neo-Armadillo Protein Prophet 6h ago
There are a lot of methods of zero cost marketing out there. She could make up a fake brand and just build a social media following. Use that to fill the gaps on her resume and provide some real numbers.
Also, if the market is this bad, just imagine what happens if your company does a round of layoffs.
I’ve been telling people since 2023 that we need to assume the market will never improve and things will only get harder from here. Save those acorns, squirrels.

I graduated in 2009 into the recession and it’s definitely feeling like that. I own my own business in two very distinct and mostly recession-proof fields but when I graduated it took me 4 years to find something in my field. Tell her she may have to settle outside her field. Warehouse jobs are paying fairly well and hiring alright in some areas. Do that for a minute and keep putting in applications. It’ll also help close that two year gap on her resume. She may also consider self-employment. There are lots of small businesses wanting to stay away from AI who would love to have an in-person marketing expert to help them navigate a new world of business promotion.
Shoutout to you for being supportive. It sounds like she’s really trying and you having her back is definitely helping that not be as overwhelming as it could be.

It is definitely an in-demand career and while I do think it will have some growing pains, we aren’t going anywhere. The other commenter saying that people are turning to AI isn’t accurate at all. Some people are and most of them were never going to come see a therapist anyway. If anything, AI is going to significant cut down on the clerical BS we have to manage. I’d suggest finding your niche and specializing. I’ve had my own private practice for three years and have been carrying a full caseload for the majority of it. Of course, the cool thing is that in private practice that means about 15-20 clients a week.

Posts like this and the comments surprise me so much. My husband and I work in the same company and he was recently promoted to a position that hires new employees. We are a large, globally recognized company with a good reputation, benefits, and competitive pay in a desirable field. Not to mention, we live/work in an area that many people want to live in.
It came time for him to put out hiring ads for the first time to fill some positions, and was fully anticipating a total bombardment of applications to dig through. It’s been weeks. He’s had 4 applicants. The job posting is on LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. and hardly any applicants. We were both shocked having been reading posts like this for a couple years now.
I wonder if there’s something else going on, some kind of bullshit AI “firewall” in between applicants and companies that doesn’t even allow for applications to get through.

u/Shawnessy Hungry man 4h ago
I remember like 7 years ago, I had a friend I'd worked with I wanted to get hired on to work with me. We were needing someone, he fit perfectly, and I could work well with him. Indeed bounced his application and we never found out why. I had to have HR go in, find it for me, and print it off.
Thankfully they agreed he was a good fit and he got hired on. Eventually became my supervisor for a couple years.

"It’s been weeks. He’s had 4 applicants."
YMMV. We had a job posting for a position requiring 5-10 years experience. Not sure if it was on Indeed or other sites, but it for sure was on LinkedIn. I think last count it was over 400 applications that our HR team screened.

u/Pretend_Mixture_7179 Girl Lurker 3h ago
Posting jobs on linkedin is so hit or miss. Some get thousands of applicants in 24 hours and others sink to the bottom for seemingly no reason.

u/Parking-Usual BoyDinnerEnjoyer 4h ago
That's so interesting. I look for jobs and I'll see "posted 10 minutes ago" and it already has nearly 100 applicants.
15
u/Captain_StarLight1 Shower Beer Scholar 2h ago
To my knowledge, that’s exactly what’s going on. My mom also does hiring for her company, and receives very few applicants despite the job being in software engineering, which should have more applications coming in than letters to Santa every year. The AIs check for very specific phrases on applications, which helps weed out randos who send in a crayon drawing for their resume, but also weeds out plenty of qualified people who didn’t put the very specific phrases the bots were looking for in the exact correct terms.

I've had the same experience (for far longer than 6 months); at this point I feel like we'll all have to wait it out until HR bots cost more than the value they deliver, or companies rediscover their moral compass and start having humans engage with the hiring process again (lol)

that "firewall" is almost certainly a thing, and I'd argue that it's worth it for your husband to investigate that.
Every public forum is going to have spam from scammers so whatever system his company is implementing to get ahead of them is likely catching plenty of false positives.
It doesn't even have to be AI, it could just be a filter that auto-rejects certain resume formats or email domains or something.
5
u/Illustrious_Shoe7496 Gay Gourmet 2h ago
Can you PLEASE ask him to find out what the firewall is and let us know (only if that's not a breach of any of the policies)?
I've a hunch but I still don't know. In most cases I think it's resume. AI goes through your resume and see if it meets basic requirements. A simple trick is to just copy your resume pdf fully and paste it in notebook app. That's what AI sees.
Also, I've some applications asking beforehand if they can use AI too process my application. Is it wise to just say no for that? I always just put yes.
3
u/Floral-Bubble Girl Lurker 3h ago
idk about a specific firewall, but a lot of places do use ai as kind of an initial filter and a lot of people do get unfairly filtered out before a real person even gets to see their resume (and on top of that sometimes it even just comes down to formatting. like if you format your resume in a way that the ai can’t read you just don’t get past it). it’s frustrating as hell
3
u/dr_merkwuerdigliebe Girl Lurker 3h ago
There is definitely some kind of automated screening for at least some systems, and also I think some HR/higher level management shenanigans trying to conceal how much they're actually not hiring. Twice now I've had former coworkers recommend me for roles at their companies I am entirely qualified for, with managers who had seen my resume and were definitely interested. I applied using the provided link, and in both cases was auto rejected within minutes. In one case my coworker told me to apply again because he spoke to his manager and they both believed it was a mistake. So I did, this time no immediate rejection, but another form rejection the next day followed by an email from someone who was apparently a recruiter who told me not to apply to the same listing again.
There was also a role I was recommended for where I got an interview, but it was immediately obvious the hiring manager wasn't going to consider me (the first thing he said was "you're lucky I'm available this late" for an appointment time that his team picked). I assumed it was just something about me, but no, it's been a year and a half and that role is still open and being posted and my friend at the company has told me they never hired anyone despite claiming they had multiple positions for that role open. They also had somebody quit and haven't backfilled it. No idea what the end goal is there, but it's definitely a thing right now.

Its funny you say that I've had my application to jobs rejected over weekends before. Meaning no human ever even looked at it so I can imagine the use of Ai in vetting resumes pretty much guarantees potentially qualified people will never get the chance to even get interviewed let alone get the job.

u/bajajoaquin Man vs Fridge (Fridge is winning) 3h ago
I don’t know if that’s what’s happening with your husband’s situation, but I’ve felt that way for a long time. Before AI, there was always a feeling that if you didn’t check some arbitrary boxes, nobody looked at your actual skills and expertise. At least then the resumes would have gone to a person, though.
For me, it’s been frustrating because I’ve managed to wind my professional career down this path of narrowing specificity and although my broad skill set is pretty widely applicable it seems increasingly like there’s no way to get out of the narrow channel.
I’m pretty lucky in that the narrowing channel has remained pretty good and pretty lucrative for me, but I’m always on edge that the bottom will fall out of our market and I won’t be able to easily jump over to something else.

Is the pay competitive? Usually when companies complain about people not wanting to work it's because they don't pay what the job is worth and there's high turnover because of it.
1
u/LaMelonBallz Boy, 30-39 1h ago
It also depends what industry people are in. Some industries have been hit much harder, while some still don't have enough people.
Add in that LinkedIns AI tool pretty much rotates people through the same group of companies, and most people don't realize they're auto opted in to that tool. Also, lots of companies that pop up in that algorithm have been putting up fake or never ending job listings.
My field has been a massacre. I'm in interviews for a position that I would have considered mildly attractive two years ago, they just told me I was one of 4k applicants. For a single role.

Man, networking. It sucks, but the adage "It's not what you know but who you know." Has never been more true than today. The market is just so f*cking competitive jobs that pay 40k in the US (not horrible, but definitely not good when compared to the cost of living) are getting 500+ applications. The odds of your application getting looked at as opposed to filtered out, let alone get an interview, are so slim.
Help her find some networking events/groups in her industry and then she needs to be engaged and really turn on the charm.
It's brutal out there, and with AI getting better all the time I don't see it improving anytime soon. Someone is going to have to figure something out or things are going to turn pretty terrible.
Good luck to you both.

I hate to be that guy, but sometimes a job is a job. My factory, for example, is always hiring. I know so many people will turn their nose at blue collar work but it beats not having insurance and a wage. Plus it provides opportunities for internal promotion, which can then be leveraged to different companies, especially if you work up to leadership of some sort.
4
u/Yikesitsven BoyDinnerEnjoyer 1h ago
The issue with doing this is you can get stuck there. Sometimes having the energy you would have spent at work, available, is what allows people to find good jobs and pursue them to employment.
Most people that get a warehouse or Walmart job “just to keep working while they find something” enter the death spiral of, “go to work, get off, too tired from the day slogging the low wage grind to pursue a better job or getting qualifications/education needed to get a better job.” So they just go to work at the same low end job for 8-10 years.
Yea factories are always hiring. Cuz there’s always people leaving cuz it sucks. And those that don’t leave, stay because they can’t leave.

Why are you owed a job just because you went to college? Why dont you work at one of the companies that you did an internship for? Why dont you start your own business in the field you studied?
At the end of the day, companies are not obligated to hire you.
2
u/3ren15 Man vs Fridge (Fridge is winning) 5h ago
Broski the internships didn't hire me either, most of them just want free labour and your benefit is you get to put them on your resume. That's it. Also working a role and running a business is completely different. That's why they have separate BUSINESS degrees and you usually have to work in the field before gaining enough knowledge to start a business in one.
You're right no one is obligated to hire me but we were all sold the same line when we were kids, be good in school, study and get a job. We were told this cos that's how it was and worked for people but not anymore apparently.

I agree it’s fucked that they told everyone that line, that’s kinda the issue with it. Convince everyone that they need to go to college and 20 years later the job market for bachelor degrees and above gets squeezed. Unfortunately the job market in general is piss poor right now. I’m lucky to have a stable job that pays very well for my area (Union apprentice) but even in our local union we’ve been getting more and more applicants and it’s become more and more competitive because our contractors can’t hire all the people that wish to become electricians. There’s just not enough work. It’s our nation’s fault for deindustrializing so rapidly and ruining millions of good blue collar jobs that provided working families with bennie’s and retirement.

Because sometimes the world doesn't care about what idealized version of your life in your head is as harsh as that sounds. I also went to college, years of not only class work but field work, internships for entire summers in cities I couldn't stand, because I "wanted" it. I got out of college and took the job offered by one of my internships because hell yeah, free job. Worked for a total of a year and 8 months before being shifted out of the field to essentially desk work, then laid off. I was looking for so long I ended up living out of my car, because that's what happens when you have no money. Got a job as a barista the first week because I was sad, depressed, stressed, pissed, the works. Eventually said, you know what, same shit job market in my field after looking then too and the only thing that was open was the trades around me. I'm doing something I never wanted or thought I would be doing and kinda loving it because I am still getting to do everything I wanted in life, just not my "dream" job because no matter how much intertwined it is with your hobbies/interests/otherwise, that's no way to live if it's a parasitic relationship. I understand that this option isn't available for everyone, trades that is, but the principle of it all... I didn't settle for less or lower my standards, I just took a different route to get where I wanted, a horizontal move is still a move and it isn't backwards. Backwards I mean being homeless again lol

yeah we definitely shouldn’t be forced to drop all standards. Maybe OP’s girlfriend could get a full time factory or warehouse job, but not every woman has the strength and stamina for it. That is just the reality. OP’s girlfriend could definitely try to get a full time retail job but those are also mass rejecting a huge amount of people atm. There are a lot of jobs that every generally able bodied human can do, but those are not factory and warehouse jobs.
Plenty of people also can’t do night shifts or shifts that start at 4 or 6am. It really is pointless to get jobs like that if you get fired after a week because your body can’t handle it. I know some will think that it’s just a matter of resilience but it’s really not. Standing all day in retail is a matter of resilience. Forcing a possibly physically untrained woman into grueling, pure physical labor work just so she can say she works "full time" is silly if money is not an issue.
And like you said it will not advance her career whatsoever, she’ll be just as stuck as before, just with a tad more money, a lot less free time to focus on her actual skills, and a hurting body

Just because a place is always hiring doesn’t mean they are hiring everyone who applies. They still reject a majority of applicants.

You're a good man. Understanding and kind. Just keep being that.
It really is a nightmare trying to find a job right now. If finances get troublesome, she may just have to pick up a barista, bartending, or server job to stay fed while she keeps sending out feelers.
On the plus side, seeing each other through hard times is a huge relationship builder. Just keep showing how much you support and value her regardless of her income. You got this bro.

Unfortunately this is reflective of our current economy. Some are doing fine while many are increasingly not. One job should be enough for the entire household. Vote for people who want to tax billionaires and inject that money back into our economy so couples don’t need two (good) full time jobs to survive

I feel this. My incredible and smart wife is in the same boat, going on 6 months soon. We are fortunate she was laid off with a decent severance bc I work part time and it can only subsidize so much.
I think the best thing to do is ask her how she feels she needs support. Coming from a place of compassion and love, with ears open, will make her feel safer. If she needs to cry, let her cry. If she wants to just vent, just let her vent. It's important to follow her lead in this, as I'm sure she feels very lost and out of control right now.
Encouraging her to pursue hobbies and hang out with friends or pick up something she's been putting off in downtime will be good for her mental health, too. She might struggle to start at first, but she needs an outlet, and strong support from you will make her feel better about it. My wife has started bouldering with friends, biking again after years of being off, and is exploring cooking and other hobbies. I go and participate when I can, but they're hers first. A balancing act is necessary, of course, but it keeps her out of her own head and gives her control over something. I think and hope this will help your wife too!
I hope both of our wives can find work soon!

mate, there aint nothing wrong about your gf, the economy is just that bad. Last time I looked for a new job I searched for over 2 years, I submited 150+ applications, went to at least 15 interview, some of wich were 3 rounds...
And when I finally decided to make a move I had accepted that my next job would be a side step instead of a clear forward step. I assumed this position would help me accelerate my next step forward and I was right. But it was still stressful and frustrating.
And the cringy part... is the job I quitted 8 months ago for this current one, I did the job for 5 years, and if I have had applied on this exact position, I would have never gotten it... cause the economy is so bad they recieved ridiculously good applications.

My wife didn’t finish college but has not had toooo much trouble finding gainful (if modest) employment that offers full benefits. Not saying this to slight your gf at all, because it definitely is tough out there, but perhaps she look outside her degree field? Not sure what she wants to work in and how much she expects to make, but there ARE options out there, especially for someone with a degree
Anyway, I’m really sorry this is happening to y’all and I wish both of you the best. It’s tough on you needing to be the breadwinner during this period. I’ve been there. It sounds like you are doing a good job supporting her! She is lucky to have you

I'm glad about the placement of your concerns. Lacking meaningful financial independence can be such a hit to confidence and security. I've never been in your shoes, but I have been somewhat in hers—paired with a supportive and caring partner while searching desperately for a job.
In the haze of doom scrolling linkedin, indeed, etc., looking at job positions, it would probably do some good for her to receive a mental respite from it. I don't mean something extravagant, like a weekend getaway. Just something that you can take her out to do, set time aside to do with her. Maybe a hobby, or an old interest of hers that she's put aside for the job search. A date, basically. Or even just organizing something for her to do with a friend or family member if she has expressed missing them. Reinforce to her that she has tremendous value as a person and partner outside of her capacity to make money.
Depending on her field, you could also help her network. 70% of new hires are introduced from networking, I believe. Do you care to share her field of work?
EDIT: Field is marketing, read in another comment. That is difficult, especially with AI on the field now. It may help to get some technical certifications in some more physical labor based jobs. Shoot, go to electrician/plumbing/HVAC school and start a social media channel. Many successful business owners get started that way these days.

My sister got a masters degree in marketing, had a few years of employment between grad and undergrad, and it still took her 2 years post grad to get a full time job. Education doesn’t matter anymore either when there’s hundreds of people applying for one job.

Nothing against your sister, but I have worked in corporate America for a while and have never, ever heard of someone with a marketing masters. We have a senior person in our marketing team and she just has a general MBA. Maybe her degree was too narrow.

Unfortunately an advanced degree probably isn’t going to help much in a role like marketing. Going back to school would only make sense if it was to pivot into an entirely different field.

i heard it’s trending such that gen z and gen alpha are no longer working traditional 9-5 office jobs like the other generations because jobs are so scarce and punishing. and that’s pushing those generations to go more rogue with their own startups and self employment (ie. social media amongst many things). even 27 years ago when i graduated with a bachelors i couldnt find a job in my field and never did. competition was already stiff and bachelors were never a guarantee for a job.
edited to say my bachelors was a very similar field as your gf’s and i agree with the posts saying AI has made it way worse as marketing is something AI can do well.

Marketing is a field slowly getting eradicated. I would suggest she looks into a Business Development with a blue collar company. Plumbers, electricians, roofers, glass, etc. there may be a good opportunity there if she is somewhat extroverted and has an aptitude for sales.

One thing you do have control over is how your friends and family approach the topic with you guys.
Having been in a VERY similar situation, I literally had to tell my family not to bring up work or jobs when we hung out because the topic was so disheartening and stressful and I would fully let them know if the situation had changed, so they did not need to bring it up or keep asking. Thankfully they respected that.
I said if they find any leads, let me know but otherwise, no news meant no change and leave it alone lol.
Idk how many people actually realize how much this situation/constant questioning makes people not want to be around them. I get that maybe they aren’t aware of how different and awful it is now (though I did tell them over and over). This job market is a**!
I also get they may not know what else to talk about with you? So maybe come with your own topics to drive the conversation and if they bring it up, I’d just gently say “we don’t want to talk about jobs, (“it’s a big source of stress for us”or however much you want to elaborate if at all- you don’t have to) but we’ll let you know if something changes.”
At least then your lady will not start resenting friends/family and avoiding them. I know that’s what I did for a long time.

I hear you. In a similar position, my wife has been unemployed for a couple of years now. We're managing but it definitely bothers me when I think of how much extra cash we'd have on hand if she'd been employed all that time.
One good thing is that my wife has taken up antique shopping and reselling on Etsy, which has actually been fairly lucrative. She started this all of her own accord after many unhelpful attempts from me to suggest things she could do with her time.
If your SO has any interests or hobbies like that that you could monetize, it might be more realistic to do than you think. Or she could just spend more time on hobbies for fun.
Only thing you can really do is be supportive and understanding of her situation.

She may need to reskill at something with job opportunities, like accounting, nursing, etc, if she has been unemployed this long. In-state tuition at a good state school is usually very reasonable and almost always leads to employment in those fields. A lot of useless majors from when I was young that used to be ok now lead to unemployment. It sucks. She sounds smart; at some point she will accept that whatever she thinks her "field" is will never hire her. She probably wants to give herself some deadlines and start applying to schools (takes a while to get in). Edit: Buy her the two hour job search book so that her job search can be the most productive. We had to read it when I got my MBA. Very smart - it says that 90% of people get a job at somewhere they know someone that gives them a rec, so it helps you with strategies to meet people in person (especially alumni from your school who are more likely to meet you) so you can get a coffee meeting and ask questions. It is the best way to spend your time rather than cold applying jobs. that said, my current gig is from cold applying, but I did learn a lot from getting meetings with people.
2
u/Chemical_Butterfly40 Girl Lurker 6h ago
This is probably location-dependent, but how are temp/staffing agencies in your area? She might be able to work a couple of weeks at a time and collect unemployment between gigs. Temp work has kept the lights on for me.

Ooof, I'm in the same boat. It's rough. Everyone says get into the trades, but they are SO gendered, and female-coded ones pay for shit.
I switched to a medical trade and the rate was so dismal my spouse and I ended up deciding that it is literally cheaper and less stressful for me to stay home.
I took over all the stuff we were paying to outsource and we've avoided a second car payment. I try to help us save as much as possible and really enable my partner to be rested, flexible, and responsive in their own role.
I try not to think about what it's going to be like if I HAVE to start looking again in the future with a gap in my history.
I hope your spouse comes to realize that there are many ways for her to contribute and that she has inherent value, and that you remind her often that her support is also critical to YOUR paycheck (assuming it is). My spouse has gotten promoted multiple times since I was furloughed from my original job and I like to think it's not a coincidence.

I’m in the same exact boat. My (37M) partner (30M) has been hunting since January when we moved to California. I got lucky and got a job before we moved, but he’s been struggling and spends hours each day on applications, cover letters, and has regular appointments with a career coach. He’s getting turned down for part-time and retail (a field he’s worked before). We’re both in academic advising and tons of roles pop up around us, but he’s only had one interview all damn year. I do my best to keep any frustration I have with the situation aimed at anything but him bc I see how hard he’s trying and how heavy he feels not being able to contribute to bills. It sucks. But this market is ass and he’s doing what he can and should, and sounds like your girl is doing the same. Us supporting our partners in tough times is exactly what we can and should do, too, so I’m proud of you and wish y’all the best!

She has a degree. If you are in the US, most states are hurting for teachers. She can approach the school district and see what she needs to do to get an emergency teaching certificate. Usually the only requirement is that she needs a 4 year degree and in most cases able to pass a criminal background check.
It’s solid and usually very stable work with great vacations and decent benefits.

I will say this economy is in the shitter regardless of what the past two administrations have said. Finding a job in your field of choice and being properly compensated for it is insanely hard today. However not to be that guy, but there are plenty of jobs or things off the books someone could do to generate money and no not OF, but take up waitressing, walk dogs, baby sit, take even a part-time job or minimum wage job to hold you over. ie this isn't stuff you are going to be putting on your resume, but this is something that will keep the money flowing. She still might be short at the end of the month, but at least she will have some money to contribute or pocket money.

The insurance industry needs people desperately. Underwriting, marketing, sales, service etc.
if she’s able to hold a conversation, women clean up in sales generally but especially commercial insurance. Men like talking to women, women like talking to women.
I use my trainee as a door kicker. She gets us in places that won’t give me the time of day because I’m one of 10,000 middle aged dudes asking to sell them shit.
Edit: don’t believe the life insurance places. No you won’t make 250k in your first year. They will charge you for your desk and phone and professional liability. Those job ads are scams.

Unemployment has stayed relatively the same with a slight dip in recent months. I wouldn’t lose hope in finding a full time job if I were her.
It also helps to include the experience she’s gaining in the part time job, or even a reference if you’re cool with someone, on the resume itself, if that’s not already being done.
Try to look up active solutions in interviewing, and things to work on with her (practice interview), to boost her confidence.

Felt that. Currently in a situation myself where I ended up having to take a job not in field, and quite frankly, that I’d rather be doing something else, but it’s 21/hr, and it pays the bills atleast until I can find smth better.
Thankfully you do have a cushion it sounds like. I wish her the best of luck in this ungodly levels of awful job market.
Also, Amazon DSPs are generally always hiring if there’s any hubs around you, and pay 24-27 an hour regardless of minimum wage in the state (these wages are set by Amazon as a corporate entity.) You only need a drivers license, a “clean” driving record (low tickets, no accidents), and If it wasn’t conflicting w my schedule, I’d be doing it myself. Maybe something to look into for a higher income and something full time while applying after work. It’s taxing work physically but.
Warehouses generally are around 22-24/hr, usually 2nd/3rd shift, and generally are “easy” jobs (just physically demanding.)

I'm in a similar boat, just reversed roles. My wife makes good money and I've struggle to find permanent work. Luckily I found some seasonal part time work, but I've been struggling even finding part time work.
If she isn't going to therapy, have her go. If she's doesn't have the energy, do the legwork and show her who she can sign up with. My wife did this for me, and it was the push I needed.
This only applies in the US, but it still has it's benefits. I'm going to get kind personal here, if you have inclination to be with her for the long term. You may want to think about marriage. In the US once you hit 26 you can no longer use your parents insurance. It wasn't why we got married, but it did influence the date. With marriage, you can share insurance. Also, despite when people "I don't need the government involved in my relationship", it provides you with alot more power for both of you.
Obviously, it's something to have in the back of your mind, and Im not telling to do it. Only do it if you want to and you think she is the right partner for you.
I know you said money isn't a problem, but if you find yourself in a situation where you need to start cutting food to pay bills (like we did), look for a food pantry. There is no shame in going.
My last bit of advice, have fun together regularly. Watch a movie, go for a walk, lay in bed and just talk, make a fun meal. What ever you guys have fun doing together.
Seriously, I hope she finds something. The job market is rough and I pretty much given up on it right now.

Me and my ex went through the same thing. I got a job offer after looking in my field for ~8 months, but got them to agree to hold off for her to graduate in a couple months. Then off we moved to another state (don't worry, it was good move for her). But she had a miserable time finding a job, so she started waiting again. She sent out maybe 100+ applications and got 2 interviews. Both making under $15/hr, less than what she was making waiting tables. She eventually got a decent job not in her field (which means she was stuck there for years until companies started to look past her education).
I took care of pretty much everything then, except her student loans which she refused all offers for help, despite it stressing her tf out. She was very stubborn and had a lot of pride.
I can't say it was great for the relationship either, not that I did anything wrong, but the resentment and blame had to flow somewhere. Kind of the penultimate strike in our relationship.
Good luck to her and you.

The amount of people unwilling to take a career pivot in order to work is unbelievable. Work up into management: Panda Express $90-120k. McDonald’s $100k+. Costco $50k starting out, management $110k+. Buccees starts at 20/hr and management makes $250k+
Is she applying for jobs and prepared to work outside of her DESIRED career field?

I wasnt sure if it was just me or not. I had no issue getting my first 4 jobs but my last time, it was a struggle and I finally got into Walmart with no interview somehow. I have my eyes on a few other jobs but at least I have this one for some sort of income

My ex lived with me for a year and couldn't get a job no matter how hard she tried. I had no problem providing (aside from the fact I work full time+ for under 30k as a grad student) but the credit card debt was adding up. Consider yourself lucky yall have a good relationship if anything. That the past 2 years have at least maintained a future with the one you love. I was struggling at work cause any time I spent in the lab was some sign of me cheating in her eyes and she also thought I resented her because of shit from her own upbringing when I never even complained or pushed the issue. I wish the best for the two of you.

Been in the same boat as of late, things turned around for the Halloween and Christmas seasons but after holidays, theme park entertainment cleans up. Hoping she finds something good after but so many people will be in her same boat.

Has she tried staffing agencies?
It's not just warehouse work. They have customer service, clerical, and medical jobs as well. They can get you in within a week.

I’m 23, graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in May 2025 and finally start a job in my field on Monday.
I was working seasonal physical labor and part time retail between a large period of unemployment where I felt my money slowly disappearing and the shame and disappointment setting in.
It’s so hard out there right now and I know how hard it is to stay motivated when you’re constantly getting denied/ghosted and possibly working odd jobs. I understand how embarrassing it is at larger family functions and you see the reaction on people’s face when you tell them you’re unemployed or working part time retail with a bachelor’s degree. It’s not great to be a young person right now.

Job market sucks so much right now all across the world. My wife is stressed about what its going to be like next year when she starts applying for jobs (currently hasn't worked since we did IVF and had a baby as her health took a massive dive). I'm able to keep us afloat but I only have 7 months left on my contract, and no guarentees I'll be made permanent. And more companies are laying people off so it's super worrying.

The job market sucks for people looking for saturated jobs. Easy lazy office jobs.

I spoke with the owner of a company that sells a niche produce wholesale online. They said they used to not be able to grow their business because they couldn’t staff the positions necessary to accomplish it.
Now they have people with Masters degrees applying for jobs answering the phones.
I have a friend with 17 years of experience as a software developer who worked for a company that laid off 80% of their workforce on a Zoom call a year ago. It has taken her 11 months of concerted effort to land a new position in her field. She’s doing IT work now.
It’s bad out there.

Hi, I’m a mod assistant and I set up one-click reverse image searches for each post. Here, at BDD, we require a food pic with every post and we require each post to be authentic. That means the food pic you submit must be your own, not something you found on the internet.
But I can’t report fakes. If you see that I have linked to a pic that is found elsewhere on the internet, REPORT IT!
