Mr Rogers did the same « political showing down people’s throats », casually breaking segregation barriers by soaking his feet in a pool with a Black policeman

229

u/djaleister_ Aug 03 '26

The pilot episode of his show had anti-Vietnam War messaging too. He was political from the beginning.

5

u/nushustu Aug 03 '26

it took me way too long to realize you didn't mean an episode where he brought a pilot on the show.

She's in the same lane as Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. Sesame Street got in a bunch of shit with the conservatives during covid for being, well, Sesame Street. You know how committed you have to be to real, tangible moral evil to hate on Sesame Street?

Pictured below, people hating on Mr. Rogers, Ms. Rachel, and Sesame Street.

u/thefuckevengoingonan Aug 03 '26

You know how committed you have to be to real, tangible moral evil to hate on Sesame Street?

The President was a literal Sesame Street villain in the 90's, played by Joe Pesci too https://muppet.fandom.com/wiki/Ronald_Grump_(human)

Pretty sure Biff was inspired by dump too. You can really tell in BTTF Part 2...We've always known he's a shady, creepy, cheating, lying, sleazy, greedy POS!

3

u/Super-Visor Aug 05 '26

You’re right! The shift in the 80s to Lex Luthor being a business man in his own tower instead of a mad scientist was partially inspired by him and his family too. Inspired a lot of villains both real and fictional and will continue to for a long time.

3

u/Odd-Fun-6042 Aug 04 '26

Almost as prescient as the Simpsons

43

u/dougmc Aug 03 '26

Also in 1988. And in 2005. (Well, a villain, but not played by Joe Pesci each time.)

He's been parodied by Sesame Street three times, because Sesame Street is set in New York City, where he's been building up a reputation for decades.

More details here.

Fun fact, Sesame Street produces episodes for Nigeria that don't have the Cookie Monster. Realizing that many Nigerian children didn't have cookies and either couldn't relate or might feel left out, they swapped out Cookie Monster for... Zobi the Yam Monster, who eats up all the yams and teaches children about sharing and not being greedy.

223

u/Ronin_Man Aug 03 '26

I love seeing stuff like this.

In Takalani Sesame (South African version), there is a muppet named Kami who is a five-year-old girl who is HIV-positive. She is a joyful character who dispels myths and reduces stigma regarding her diagnosis. She has also made appearances in the Nigerian version.

97

u/Snake_Staff_and_Star Aug 03 '26

Thats awesome and SUPER fuckng sad.

56

u/Mysterious_Health387 Aug 03 '26

7

u/EnigmaticX68 Aug 03 '26

So I don't know who saw/remembers the Hulk movie with Ed Norton.

There's a scene where he's watching Sesame Street with a Portuguese to English dictionary. That, my friends, is not bs.

It's been proven is one of the best way to start learning a new language. And it makes sense. The show is all about learning the basics. Now, of course, you can't learn an entire new language just by watching Sesame Street. But learning to count, basic words, basic phrases, they've got it covered

Ms Rachel is a good egg. Every parent knows her and her crew are some of the best children educators/ entertainment about. I won't let anyone slander her name.

15

u/PromisesNone Aug 03 '26

Im not sure what they are referring to, but I know he trained an impersonator to be Blippi when he "went on tour". The kids immediately called him out and they cancelled the tour.

6

u/Maximum-Ad-769 Aug 03 '26

WTH is the og poop video about??

9

u/Frejian Aug 03 '26

Before he came out with Blippi, he apparently tried a stint at shock-value content creation. There is a video of the OG Blippi dropping a deuce on another dude's either face/mouth or chest, I forget which. I didn't watch the video (for obvious reasons), just read about it before.

17

u/Maximum-Ad-769 Aug 03 '26

Wow. What a nasty fuck. I can’t stand him and his OTT ways, something always felt off to me, what’s even crazier is that he’s been allowed to reinvent himself for kids TV? Yuck

12

u/Frejian Aug 03 '26

Yeah, between him and Ms. Rachel, you can tell that he is doing it purely for the money rather than any actual care for children while Ms. Rachel actually cares for children.

8

u/Key-Emergency989 Aug 03 '26

Well also Ms Rachel got started because she had a musical theater degree and her son was non-verbal until he was 3 years old. So she researched speech development and used her musical skills to write songs to try and improve/encourage his speaking. Once he started speaking, she realized that other parents may be in a similar situation with a non-verbal child but may not have the same resources and experiences to do things that worked for her. So she started making videos and posting them for free. Obviously she got some ad revenue and now she's a brand in and of herself, but it's not like she set out to do it solely to make a career out of it.

19

u/manny_the_mage Aug 03 '26

I think that’s what the post is saying

You might be reading the word “accomplice” with negative connotation instead a positive one

15

u/Faeruhn Aug 04 '26

I can't really blame them for reading "accomplice" negatively, really.

Most people aren't going to hear that word in any situation that isn't a news report/article or TV show/movie about crime. Same with the word "perpetrator".

Even though the meaning of the word "perpetrator" is essentially just "the person who did the thing", just like "accomplice" essentially means "person who helped the 'perpetrator' do the thing."

So in a situation where you are talking about a man who saved a box of abandoned kittens from washing down a river with the help of his son, the man could be called the 'perpetrator' and the son his 'accomplice'.

So it doesn't have to have negative connotations, but most people are going to almost exclusively hear those words in crime-related discussions, so I can't blame them for reading it 'negatively' in the OPs post.

You can't claim stabbing someone is self defense to them pushing you. You could punch or push them or kick them..that would be self defense and proportional. Stabbing someone over that isn't proportional. Stabbing someone over being attacked with a weapon would likely be proportional and self defense.

That incident is a grim reminder of why I don't carry weapons. I'm in my 40s and a few months ago some kid cut me off and I honked at him. He then proceeded to try to run me off the road, brake check me, and then got out of the car and came to my window wanting to fight me. He was 17 to 19 years old max. I was afraid and angry and if I had a weapon on me, I think I would have used it. I realized that his girlfriend was sitting in the car and this stupid kid was just showing off for her. I might have killed some kid for basically no reason other than he was asshole teenage boy. I just leave the guns in the safe.

I fucking love Ms. Rachel, and she was the only show we’d let our son watch for a bit. He also loves Ms. Rachel, she’s helped him learn and we also interact with him when we have her show on. I want him to learn empathy, to care about others, to be respectful and kind, accepting of others except assholes/racists.

She’s my role model. When I’m with family and if they say racist shit, I call it out. I’m not putting up with it and I don’t want my son thinking it’s okay.

9

OP is using accomplice in the social justice context.

Accomplice vs. Ally

Ally: A person who supports a group in theory, learns about privilege, or speaks out on an individual level, but avoids high-risk disruption. Allyship is often considered the thinking and learning phase.

Accomplice: A person who takes direct action to attack institutional and structural injustices. Their work is guided and directed by the needs of the marginalized group.

Core Traits of an Accomplice

Direct Action: Focuses on changing systemic rules, policies, and power dynamics rather than just personal feelings.

Risk Taking: Accepts personal, professional, or social consequences to challenge the status quo.

Centered Leadership: Follows the leadership and direction of the impacted community instead of taking charge.

Here's what i learned when i first got into activism from my black friends; being an ally is standing on the sidelines doing your little cheers but not getting involved enough to caught in any crossfire or actions taken. The government already doesn't like activists and are trying to make our causes and actions illegal. So being an accomplice in this sense is being on the front lines taking dutiful actions to help make lasting change and risking arrest, jail time, and even death for the cause.

Hey OP, I did look it up and you are correct. Tbh I didn’t believe it at first and was pretty annoyed by your responses, but yes in social justice situations accomplice is the correct word.

That being said it would be nice to give people a little hint other then “educate yourself” I’m not saying you have to type a paragraph but if someone gives the dictionary definition you could just say “look up the social justice definition” since we’re talking about a long standing word that’s been given new meaning in this situation many people wouldn’t be aware of.

I’m glad to have learned something new but a little sad the method you used just left a lot of people annoyed and confused, instead of more informed.
