I'm a firm believer that Aus Rap is a genre in itself, that pulls from it's own cultural repertoire (i.e Eshay/Adlay slang, Graff crews etc.) This is Aus Rap as us long term fans of the genre know, love and respect.

However in recent years following the death of mainstream rap's popularity and the subsequent explosion of underground rap music that pulls from different cultural repertoires (Underground UK, Hyper Pop, and Opium aesthetics). I truly believe that we have an arms race in the local music scenes between strictly aus rap or strictly Aus UDG.

These are the two hemispheres that share some crossover, although have entirely different origin stories.

I do think that there are artists who are very much in the centre of this dichotomy such as the Lonely Souljas, Cult Shotta, Isaac Puerile, Sidney Philips, Lil Ket, Jani Cruz, Fokelore.

These guys are representing hybridisation of these genres, and for good reason are seeing massive success right now.

What have you guys noticed in your local scenes? Is there conflict, is there harmony? I'd love to know what you guys reckon.

Does anyone know where the “Kerser + ATLiens / OutKast instrumental / freestyle / spit / 2011–2014, he had a song on SoundCloud and i think it got pulled for copyright and can't find anywhere

Hi all. I’m a current presenter on 3RRR FM which turns 50 this year. I’m hosting a live event for it at the station this Thursday night to celebrate Wheels of Steel, one of the pioneering hip hop shows in the late 80s. The show was an early supporter of the developing local hip hop scene, including my groups Code of Ethics and Acapulco Gold. As part of this and to provide context, I’m trying to piece together what else was happening on Melbourne radio up to and around this time. This is what I’ve been able to work out so far, but would love any details, names or stories from people who remember those days. Especially any Wheels of Steel recollections of course.

1983 Beat Treatment 3RRR - Andrew Maine ‘the best disco, funk, soul and rap, and all their infamous offspring’
1988-1991 Wheels of Steel 3RRR - Kieron Meagher, Rob Farley, Chase
1988-1989? Radio Head 3CR - DJC & Axel
1988-1990 ?? 3CR - Nadine Rub-a-Dub
1988?-1990? P Jam 3CR - P Jam
1989-199x Storm the Studio 3RRR - Steve Polak, Roger Polak
1989-1993 Beats n Things 3PBS - DJC feat. P Jam, Krisy (who took over the show in 1993 as Steppin' to the AM)
1989-199x Live and Direct 3PBS - Idem
1989-1993 Fat Free 3WRB - Max Hollywood

I have a longer list which also covers broader dance music shows as well if you have any memories of those too: https://www.reddit.com/r/melbournemusic/s/VQq0HQTJxF

The pics are of an airbrushed hoodie that Aim made for me (and he did a matching one for MC Pluto) around 1990. Not sure what he's doing these days, but if anyone knows him, let him know I still have and love this hoodie!
