Trump recently stated he’d direct the DOJ to settle Camp Lejeune claims if the GOP wins the midterms, adding: “If we don’t win, there’s no money.” Question: To the US Veterans, what are your thoughts on a president tying Camp Lejeune settlement payouts directly to midterm election outcomes?
670
u/Molwar 9h ago
The outcome doesn't matter, Trump doesn't pay out.
226
u/MaikeruGo 8h ago
To add to this, he has a history of not paying people that he's promised money to. There have been cases where folks have ended up in court for years just to get the money they had been promised for doing work (I believe construction in at least one case) for him.
If folks are banking on getting any money from him they should take that into consideration.

It's his standard tactic. "Go ahead and sue". If he can stall the creditor for long enough, they'll pay more in legal fees than they can recover, so they don't even try - whereas he's paying his lawyers all the time anyway, so no loss.

u/Adler4290 8h ago

I think he postponed or neglected to pay lawyers too in the past.

My dad was stationed there in the late. ‘50’s and early ‘60’s. Died in 2004 at 65 from intestinal cancer. We got the same story, not covered. Fuck cancer.

As a veteran, I don't need this to prove to me that Trump is a crook and a traitor to the United States.
It's a well-documented fact that he dodged the draft more than once, and he has made disparaging comments about veterans and the families of veterans many times over the course of his political career.
Any service member or veteran that supports him should be ashamed of themselves.

I wish I knew what on earth my dad is listening to that made him say this president is the best friend to veterans we've ever had. Like, who is spouting that nonsense? Was it the part where he called veterans cowards? Was it insulting John McCain? Was it claiming the bone spurs?

Nothing this megalomaniac says or does surprises me any more. I’m just embarrassed. Serving during the Iraq war kind of broke my illusion that we were unequivocally “the good guys”, but I didn’t think we’d ever stoop to overt fascism.
It’s so overt the Republicans are kind of split between saying that perhaps fascism isn’t actually all that bad, or trying to rewrite the definition of fascism. My personal favorite is when they try to say that fascism is actually a leftist ideal, lol. That’s some next-level denial.

This grifter is trying to buy votes. Plain and simple. Camp Lejune personnel that were affected will get the settlement whether Repubs or Dems win, he's just trying to scare people into voting his way. If they haven't seen through that lie yet there's no hope for them. He reneged on almost every promise he's ever made. He screwed farmers, truckers, auto workers, coal miners, everyone he's ever made a promise to. They still vote for him. They're told Dems are socialists and they don't even know what a socialist is. This isn't even a promise, it's a lie. I'd bet dollars to donuts if he wins or loses, he'll try to find a way to renege on the settlement either way.

The PACT Act (2022): In August 2022, President Biden signed the PACT Act (Honoring our PACT Act of 2022) into law. It represents the largest expansion of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare and disability benefits in decades.
The PACT Act expanded coverage so significantly that over 1 million veterans and survivors received claims approvals and earned benefits within its first two years. This led to historic surges in enrollment and disability compensation.
Massive VA Workforce Expansion: To manage the surge in claims and medical appointments created by the PACT Act, the Biden administration expanded both the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) at their fastest growth rates in over two decades.
Broadening Access to Care Early: Under Biden's directive, the VA expedited eligibility timelines ahead of schedule, allowing all toxic-exposed veterans—including post-9/11 veterans—to enroll directly in VA healthcare years earlier than originally phased in the legislation.
Anyone who works with the VA/veterans disability etc will tell you that Joe Biden had done more for vets then probably anyone recently.

ETA: this is about the 5th bribe he's put out for the midterms. He obviously knows by now that his own administration is not going to call him out for this, so he can say whatever he wants- there's no consequences. If The People have a problem with it, he knows he can simply sic ICE on any dissent, and then declare martial law.

u/TheMacIntyreRange 9h ago edited 8h ago
Unbiased answer: There's supposed to be a settlement reached by 10/30/26, but in reality this is a negotiation target date. There's been a lot of concern, as reported by people closely associated with this case, that if the house or senate flips in November the funds will not be approved. The Biden admin gave anyone who had spent more than 30 days at LeJeune until 10/2024 to file a civil claim, but had to wait an additional 6 months before prompting the escalation into a federal claim.
For some additional context, the complaints and internal investigations leading to the current federal case have been rolling in for decades. Marines and family members have known about these issues since the late 70s to early 80s. This massive ongoing f-up and disservice to our troops can't be owned by one single politician or political party; its 50 years of sweeping the problem under the rug.
Edit: I'm a veteran and can confirm that Lejeune is far from the only base with serious problems. Ft Cavasos (Hood) and Camp Courtney are pretty jacked up as well, and those problems are also decades old and haven't been fully brought into the light yet. If you're involved in advocacy for current military personnel and/or veterans, look into those locations.

He's a bold face liar who never honors any agreement made unless it directly benefits him personally to do so. Since honoring the agreements after the GOP wins midterms, he will not willingly honor this. Same for the $5000 check. Or going back, same reason we're never going to see the Dodg checks, the tariff checks, or anything else he's promised anyone.
Even the Covid stimulus checks he only allowed to go through if his name was on the check somewhere. And that was passed with veto proof majority in congress.
He is a conman through and through. And I'm disappointed in how many of my fellow service members voted for the draft dodger traitor.

This just shows his desperation. The Camp Lejeune issue is real. People with real claims are slowly getting their due process. It's slow because the fraudsters, freeloaders and shysters have bogged up the system and everyone has to wade through the trash.

My dad is a a part of those affected by Camp Lajeune. He was exposed to toxic chemicals when he was a Marine stationed in North Carolina. He voluntarily signed up to serve his country and was exposed to these chemicals as a result. It really fucked him up, he's been dealing with a really painful neurological condition that causes these intense uncontrollable spasms that can last for hours. I've seen the pain it's caused him, it's one of the hardest things I've ever had to witness. He gets some help from the VA but it's been a struggle and there isn't much doctors can do.
