The decline of chipotle feels personal

On the plus side, it just frees you up to go to a real burrito or taco stand/shop and get something of even better quality. There's tons of little mom and pop shops run by immigrants (and the children of immigrants) or hipper little shops that sell street tacos, big burritos, and all kinds of Mexican food in just about every city in the US.

Try a few of those and you'll never want Chipotle again.

Even the real Mexican place near me is going south. The steak in the steak burrito bowl was absolutely God awful. Its becoming stupid to eat out anywhere...I cook better at home 100% of the time

Sparse options living in Montana unfortunately, but Chipotle had my back when I went vegetarian. I wish more places had softritos/ tofu alternatives, veggie burrito feels insulting that I need some kind of protein either extra beans or tofu

Yeah, I'm not vegetarian but I know it's hard. The Taquerias near me do Huitlichoche, cheesy peppers, fajita mix, fried squash flower, sofrito, and beans for the veg options.

I've had a few to try them and they are good, but more variety would be nice for my Veg buddies.

At the trucks I've stopped at it's fresh but it's $15 per taco. I just do the Old El Paso kits at home now.

$15 per taco? What are the putting in there? A5 Wagyu, caviar, and lobster tail?

We're talking little street tacos that are like two or three bites? I have never seen them for more than like $5 bucks each, and those are crazy expensive at some dumb ass hipster bar.

All the places near me have them for like $2.5 to $3 a taco (not counting the afore mentioned hipster bar). And some of the street carts go for even less.

This was in Oakland. It was a food truck parked outside a hotel I was staying in. I was hungry so I paid so what can I say but, it must depend on where you are. The thing could literally fit in the palm of my hand.

Man, that's wild. I feel like you got ripped off big time, because there's no way that a single taco should ever be $15.

I even thought maybe since I'm your typical fat American used to American portions, I had a different definition of a serving. Unfortunately, they didn't speak English so I couldn't ask.

Tacos around me are $4-7 each. Still to much.

Where's that? $7 is nuts for a street taco.

Many of the Mexican food trucks. Its crazy. and its not fully loaded, corn tortilla, meat, onions, cilantro. But if you order three you can get em for $20

Yeah, but where? I could see it in a super high cost of living area like Hawaii, LA, San Francisco, or New York, maybe, but pretty much every where else that's way over priced.

St. Louis

Where do you live that they're $2.50, that's the real question?

Minnesota.

Totally, but as a vegan who travels constantly for work, Chipotle was such a valuable option I could count on when on the road and in parts of the country that only have chain restaurants

2

u/Kiyohara 7h ago

Oh, yeah that makes sense. Being travelling vegan can be rough if you want to stay vegan. A lot of places either don't bother or do fun stuff like put "MaPo Tofu with Pork" on the vegetarian menu because "it's tofu..."

Food wise I agree with you

Unfortunately those hole in the wall spots don’t pay the same attention to all the stuff that gets my wife to consent to go to a restaurant. Fast service, comfortable seating, general clean vibe, clearly labeled non spicy options, clear ordering process, clean / not confusing bathroom situation

Chipotle doesn’t even do most of these things.

Big one I forget to mention is “have a parking lot”

This is the deal. I drive right by those places wishing I'd stop again.

I almost returned my last burrito from them. Never again.

I just done understand the hate, I don’t thing much has changed except price increases but far less than other places my meal only increased $1.50 since 2017

They used to taste fresh and seasoned. Now, every chipotle ive been to (across multiple states) tastes stale/cold and the burrito is like 80% the size of what it used to be. And no shot that its only been a $1.50 increase in 10 years.. my burrito that was $6.86 when i first went there is now $10-12 depending on which state im in. Gonna call your bluff on this one

I just checked my rewards account. Mine went from $6.95 in 2017 to $8.45 and I’m in Chicago.

Chipotle seems like it only got better, except the new adobo chicken is significantly worse than the honey chipotle chicken.

I feel like this hate got “popular” and is way out of hand. I’ve been going to chipotle since back in like 2012. My buddy had the special card to get a bunch of free food because we went so much. Yes, the prices have doubled from $6 to $12ish. But so has literally everything in the US so it’s kinda dumb to blame chipotle for that.

No clue what the issue is with people complaining about the quality. You can still ask for extra rice and beans when you’re in line. They don’t care. They’ve been coming out with new meats and seasonings all the time. There’s a brand new chipotle lime sauce that is really really good. There are even new chili lime chips that are bomb (although those can be inconsistent). They did do the bad queso drop but at least they’re trying to drop new things. And I frankly didn’t mind the queso. The main ingredients (rice, beans, cheese, guac, salsas) have literally remained unchanged. People just think they’re cool to diss them now

u/Sir_holy_bears 4h ago

Trust me I've never thought I  was cool. I just know I didn't have to add my own seasonings to chipotle before, but nowadays I do because their ingredients taste like water

Guess I never noticed because I just smother mine is their Tabasco chipotle hot sauce which is fire
