Mod Announcement What's the difference between /r/AskLEO and other notable law enforcement subreddit(s)?

We don't believe in secret rules and bans.

That means that unlike some notable LE subreddits, if you don't see it explicitly forbidden in the rules located in our sidebar -> as well as in our rules page, you won't be banned. That includes but is not limited to:

  • Activity outside of our subreddit

  • Saying you don't like law enforcement (officers)

  • Failing to say you do like law enforcement (officers)

  • Giving off the impression that you might not like law enforcement (officers)

  • Asking questions that are/seem ignorant

One of the consequences of our philosophy is that purely from the mathematics of that line of thinking, we have fewer law enforcement officers willing to answer questions here, and thus fewer people asking questions. As you might expect of any group of human beings, some law enforcement officers and their supporters don't want to leave their echo chambers, where they are protected by heavy-handed moderators from dissent, including uncomfortable topics they don't want to discuss. I imagine their moderators receive tons of "ban this guy please, they obviously hate cops" reports just like we do. The difference is we ignore them.

We believe that there needs to be a public space for open discourse, as that's the best way to face and fix the ills of our society.

We believe that hiding from hard questions makes us all weak - especially the hiders.

So do us all a favor and choose instead to participate in open and transparent subreddits like ours, while keeping in mind that every single person who answers your questions does so for free, simply to help you learn.

I think that about sums it up. Feel free to ask for clarification or explanation about any of the above.

Meta Sorry folks, but the PT/Gym question addict is changing tactics again, so:

I had to do some behind the scenes bizarre tweaks that might catch some good faith questions due to the desperate tactics they're resorting to making me have to write some weird code.

Again, apologies in advance if your question has to sit in limbo for a while; you can thank the misguided or ill person who "totally innocently just wants to ask if our police station has a gym" 500 times.

General Getting venison from Game Wardens in Maine?

Is there a way I can get deer that were poached or that someone hit and ran on the road, or any other reason for death (if it's still safe to consume)? My brother has to shoot a deer he found on the road that someone hit. After calling the game warden and telling him it was ok to shoot it, he asked if he could take it home, and after the paperwork and everything, he managed to take it home. he also got a call about another deer he could have that was poached. Is this a thing you can only have happen if you deal with it in person, or can I call the game warden office and ask?

General Badge patches, add badge number or no?

We are looking at getting embroidered patches of our badges made for our jackets and vests. For those of you that have these do you have your badge number on the patch? The cost is significantly higher if we add badge numbers because they have to retool the machine each time to change the badge number, whereas if we get them without badge numbers, it is just reprinting the same design.

General Still work in Law enforcement?

Can I work as a cop with possession of liquor by a minor at 20 years old in Maine if it was a civil charge in the eyes of the court? The Game Warden who caught me said it shouldn't affect it.

Situation Advice Is there really no way to call a Welfare Check without an address?

My friend, who has expressed that they are actively suicidal, has not texted me since September 11th.

I know their name, the town they live, their phone number, I have a picture, their rough age, I have a description of who they live with and where they work but no direct address. They refused to give it to me. I called the non-emergency line for their town and they said they can't do anything without an address because "how will they figure out where to look?" And I am so disappointed. Is there really no way for the police to check if my friend is okay?

Can I do anything to get a welfare check without an address?

I know a lot of smaller government agencies use Facebook to share alerts -- but now that this might become an expensive option, what is the plan?

General Why are battery on leo or resisting dropped?

Civilian here, but after seeing so many of you get assaulted by suspects then the charges for resisting or battery dropped on a plea or not at all makes me feel like we’re not holding those who are convicted accountable.

I assume it’s to get a plea but I think it’s more complicated, but it seems like the evidence of body cameras easily provides an account of what happens to you.

Honestly watching this happen and see the charges swept off must be frustrating.

Maybe it’s part of the job? But it seems a bit disappointing for it to be dropped and just lets the suspect become emboldened.

General College student with several questions. how is LE as a general career?

I am a current undergrad student in Massachusetts interested in working in law enforcement after school. I had a few questions about potential jobs, major recs, and salary.
-First of all, what often goes under looked in law enforcement jobs, I’ve heard of the big ones as police or SA in local county or FBI/DEA, but what do people often overlook that yall think should be considered. Does anyone regret choosing law enforcement? If so why?
-What majors would you guys recommend in college. I’m currently undecided so I have lots of flexibility here, I’ve heard that criminology/criminal justice majors usually don’t matter that much in getting jobs in federal law enforcement. What majors do you guys think is valuable on an application and just for reliability if this doesn’t work out.
-Is it easy to make a comfortable living in law enforcement? I’m not going to pick a career solely based on salary, however I do want to make a pretty good above average living in whatever I do in life, hopefully easily clearing 6 figures in later years.
-lastly if you guys have any tips on becoming a stronger applicant for a federal LE job, please share
I have been interested in LE for a while now, I have always wanted a job where I can get physical activity/field work, and work with people. Criminal justice has always been a very big interest to me.

Situation Advice Law enforcement perspective wanted: A dream where I tried to pull over for Iowa State Patrol but was arrested for fleeing

I had a vivid dream just before waking up, and I’d be interested in hearing how current or former law-enforcement officers might interpret the situation and the emotions involved.

In the dream, my younger brother and I were driving home from a cross-country road trip through Iowa. An Iowa State Patrol vehicle came up behind us with its emergency lights and siren activated.

I was driving in the middle lane of a five-lane interstate and tried to move to the right shoulder, but cars kept passing me on the right, preventing me from getting over safely. Eventually, I managed to pull over.

Despite my attempts to comply, I was arrested for felony fleeing or eluding. I invoked my Fifth Amendment rights and began paying attention to the officers’ names and badge numbers because I felt that I was being treated unjustly.

The dream continued with me being transported in a windowless bus and eventually learning that my bond was $80,000. I became increasingly angry and started thinking about holding the officers accountable through a lawsuit.

To be clear, this was entirely a dream. I haven’t experienced this incident in real life, and I’m not asking for legal advice about an actual case.

I’m curious about a few things from a law-enforcement perspective:

1. Traffic stops: If a driver is attempting to pull over but traffic prevents them from reaching the shoulder, how might an officer distinguish a genuine attempt to comply from deliberate evasion?
2. Officer perception: If an officer mistakenly interpreted that situation as fleeing, what kinds of observations would ordinarily help clarify what actually happened?
3. Emotional reaction: In the dream, I became focused on recording the officers’ identifying information and seeking accountability. Does that resemble a common reaction people have when they feel they’ve been treated unjustly or lost control of a situation?

I’m especially interested in how officers might interpret the scenario, rather than assuming the officers in the dream were acting maliciously.

The strongest emotions I woke up with were anger, a desire for accountability, and a feeling that consequences should follow if someone abuses their authority.

Have you encountered real traffic stops where a driver’s difficulty pulling over was initially misunderstood?

I live next to two LEO's and one of them is k9 handler. I like to enjoy grass after work, in my shop so as to be respectful. Will their dogs alert if they catch a wiff or do they only alert if they're commanded to?

Situation Advice What departments send non certified candidates to the academy?

Need some guidance on departments that are good to work for as police officer- entry level in these areas- MD, DE, PA, NJ.

I am not act 120 certified, I am looking for a department to sponsor me an send me to the academy upon hire. I have my bachelors and masters in criminal justice, and did a 3 month police internship.

I’ve applied to so many places and it’s become difficult and sad not being selected or offered a job. I’ve been applying for a year now.

Agency Policy (SOP) Realistically what are my odds to get into police academy with a small drug history?

For context, I had infrequently used marijuana throughout college up until the middle of my junior year (2025), I have been drugged with what I assume to be acid/LSD at a bar, and I experimented with Adderall one time during my junior year as well. Am I totally screwed?

Situation Advice [Romania] Can anyone help me with reporting suspected domestic violence and possible child abuse?

Hello everyone,
I’m looking for advice on how to properly report a person in Romania who I suspect may be involved in domestic violence. Based on the information available to me, I have proofs about alleged verbal abuse and pretty concerned about physical abuse against family members. I also have concerns about possible sexual misconduct involving minors, although I do not currently have independently verified evidence to substantiate that suspicion.
I want to handle this responsibly and ensure that any relevant information reaches the appropriate authorities.
Information I currently have:
● Name associated with the individual: Daniel Constantin Alexandru
● Another name associated with the individual: Constantin Daniel Pușcașu
● Geographic coordinates associated with the case: 47°10’3”N, 27°33’23”E
● Reported workplace: Centrul de Îngrijire Hospice „Alianța Mică” (the exact official name needs verification)
● Reported occupation or employment detail: Uber driver; vehicle registration reportedly begins with IS 14 SPD
● Reported education: UMF „Grigore T. Popa,” Iași, Romania
Some of these details may be incomplete or inaccurate, and I would appreciate advice on how to verify them through lawful channels.
My questions are:
1. What is the appropriate way to report suspected domestic violence in Romania, particularly when some of the information comes from sources other than direct observation?
2. Which Romanian authorities should be contacted if there are also concerns about possible abuse involving minors?
3. What types of evidence or documentation are most useful when filing a report?
4. Is there a lawful way for authorities to verify a person’s identity and employment details using the information above?
For the privacy and safety of potentially affected family members, I will not identify them publicly. If someone has relevant firsthand information, they can contact me privately, but I am not asking anyone to engage in harassment, publish private information, or confront the individual.
My goal is to report legitimate concerns through the proper channels, not to encourage speculation or vigilantism.
Thank you for any professional guidance.

Situation Advice Does this ruin my chances?

I’m currently in the hiring process at my local PD. Been in the process for month. Me and my wife got into an argument got loud. PD was called. She claimed I had slammed her when I did not. No visible injuries but some things in the house were damaged from us fixing. Interviewed us both. No arrest made. Just told to separate and report was made. Does this ruin my chances? Should I just withdraw?

Situation Advice Question for detective

My brother is involved in a situation where his stepdaughter accused him of inappropriate touching. According to my brother, the accusation was made after her boyfriend broke into the house, and he believes she made the allegations to protect her boyfriend.
Today, a detective came to the house to ask the girls questions, but they did not answer the detective’s questions. My brother’s wife says the detective told her he was going to close the case.
My brother’s wife told him the case was being closed, so my brother contacted his lawyer. My brother still owes the lawyer some money.
After speaking with my brother, the lawyer called him back and said he had spoken with the detective, who told him that he was submitting the case to the District Attorney’s Office (DA) tomorrow.
Now my brother is confused. His wife believes the detective is closing the case, but the lawyer says the detective is submitting it to the DA.
My questions are:
Could the detective have told my brother’s wife he was closing the case but still submit it to the DA?
Does submitting a case to the DA mean the detective is recommending criminal charges, or is the DA simply reviewing the case to decide what to do?
Is it possible the lawyer is misrepresenting what the detective said to get my brother to pay the money he owes, or could there be a misunderstanding between my brother’s wife and the lawyer?
I’m trying to understand what might actually be happening and whether my brother should be concerned that the case is moving forward.

General Recently watched a YouTube clip of an officer facilitating a DUI stop and it was his LT. It was incredibly awkward for the officer and you immediately felt sorry for him, so I am wondering if anyone has come across this situation before and had any negative/unfair repercussions.

General Letting Police go after 12 years

Leaving my job and feeling conflicted

I wanted to share my journey as I am after some words of wisdom from everyone on a similar path as I am massively struggling and conflicted!!

I have had a career for 12 years I have absolutely loved. I work shifts as a police officer. I have a fantastic team. I am in management and my job gives me so much joy I can't find anywhere else really. It is like the only time in my life I have belonged anywhere. I have 16 young constables with me who make my life complete.

With the police pay being poor and having a child (I grew up in poverty), I have spent 3.5 years building a business.

We are turning over 3 mil this year and it will likely double next year.

The kicker - I really need to give up the police. It is breaking my heart. Truly. It is all I know and love. I never expected to get to this stage.

The upsides are financial freedom, spending time with my family, better health, and a better quality of life. I'm only 34 so this is a big upside.

I'm just really struggling letting my identity as a police officer go, the camaraderie, and I'm scared I will never truly be happy again.

My family is getting sick of me working two jobs understandably. Roles are reversed. I'm the female and my partner has to pull weight more for childcare as he doesn't contribute to the business on a day to day basis (other than being awesome and holding it down at home when I'm working my shifts).

Any advice?
