History If you had the power and influence which historical fashion trends specific to Britain would you choose to revive?

Post image

Fuck it, let’s bring back Tudor gowns and entirely too tight and pretentious ruff collars or make everyone insufferable wear uncomfortable clothes dowsed in arsenic. (Creative hilarious and even downright malicious answers welcome!)

I could see myself rocking a Jon Snow Ikea rug in British winter.

Great suggestion, I follow this guy on TikTok that wears 1930s-40s suits to work, it’s definitely a sophisticated style.

Let's make Victorian times famous because of common public nudism

Either screams Victorian poverty or 70’s nude fest. You can’t win.

Hats. Proper hats. People should wear hats. I'm doing my best, but it's a one-woman revival and apparently not catching on.

Yes. I love a good fedora.

Cloaks. Great to swish away with when you’ve finished saying something.

Does the β€˜codpiece’ count, or is it not specific enough to Britain?

1

u/MajesticEconomics866 Brit πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ 11h ago

Yes, widespread European garments count!

What with puffer jackets being so popular, why not bring back the Doublet far more stylish with similar effect.

Bring back that plague doctor swag

Thought I’ve just had: Sherlock Holmes style Inverness cape coats with non-negotiable evil looking canes.

Very Mr Darcy!

The close fitting, mainly black tunics from 1420s onwards. Not the tights tho. Definitely not them.

Doublets. They are very appealing I agree.

Top hats and tails

Headwear generally. I'm a particularly big fan of elaborate early medieval headdress, over the top escoffion, chaperon with ridiculously long liripipe and the like, but I'd be happy with any fun headwear from stovepipe hats to giant edwardian bonnets to mesolithic antler headdress tbh. Fashion is just so unimaginative now compared to the past.

Regency dresses, or that period in Victorian fashion of shirts with long skirts.

I say that as someone who lives in jeans most of the time 🀣

Tunics. They look so convenient and warm

I like to imagine myself as a wise wizard when I’m in my oodie robe.

Regency Empire Line dresses. As a shortarse with great boobs and a tummy that sticks out more than I would wish, this design is extremely flattering to me lol

Late 19th / early 20th century. I very much enjoy dressing like Professor Henry Higgins

Oh lots of things everything from high waist trousers, skirts for men, cod pieces, fancy hats, nice suits...

My job involves selling costume jewellery. Strangely, this painting is very fashionable right now! The jewellery worn (young Elizabeth I?) is bang on trend!

I’ve been obsessed with this dress for years, planning on getting this custom made. Love the Tudor jewellery style and the vast use of pearls equally as well.

u/Spacticula-greybrain 10h ago

Pearls are very fashionable again at the moment.

The 1920s. Everything about that decade still looks stylish today.

Codpiece of course

The English Statute Cap (Likely to ancestor of the modern flat-cap). Named as such because, by law, all non-noble men over the age of 6 had to wear one. Brought into law to stimulate the English wool trade

Gardening. We destroyed over a million acres of wildlife habitat under blockpaving in the last thirty years n hardly anyone cares. People don't want nature near their own house, how the fuck will we save the planet? Garden, garden because the future depends on it. N of course, wilder than before, not too manicured, no weedkiller, but for god's sake rip up the block paving n garden again. It's partly why hedgehogs are going extinct, along with everything else.

Spiritually, I am already in this form everyday.

Tudor, Georgian, Victorian, all the way until the mid 80s. Capability Brown must be spinning.

1900s Victorian Britain when men wore flat caps and women wore skirts
