I see posts here all the time asking for recommendations on what to watch. So I figured I'd post about this joy of an anime I finished this weekend. I found Akiba Maid War on one of those "listicles" that have titles like Top 10 Anime To Watch While You're Fight With Your Best Friend on the Third Tuesday of the Month while It's Foggy Out. Clearly AI, so I didn't put much stock in it, but the AMW's premise caught my attention, so I threw it on my list. I had just finished watching Utena for the first time and thought an easy 12 episode palette cleanser was called for.
I'm sure many of the folks on this sub have already seen this anime. But Akiba Maid War thoroughly surprised me and was an absolute treat of an anime to watch. It is cartoonishly grotesque with its violence and genuinely funny in a way that I wasn't expecting. Plus, it has a heart that will sneak up on you before you can say "moe moe kyun!" These are the three elements that I feel made AMW such a gem, so let's break them down.
First, the violence. This is my biggest content warning because the blood is gratuitous, and as early as episode 1, relentless. I can totally understand some folks being squeamish (my sister walked by while I was watching and was thoroughly grossed out). Furthermore, the violence is (almost) always treated as the punch line. I can imagine in the times we're living in, people might not find gun fights and gang violence being treated as a joke particularly funny, which I think is completely valid. All of that being said, the violence is all so cartoonishly animated and so unrealistic that it really did achieve the absurdist levels of humor I think the creators were going for. It sort of reminded me of Kill Bill in a weird way in how over the top and fantasy-like all the blood and stabbing was. But while Kill Bill is paying homage to a particular genre, AMW is juxtaposing the absurdity of kawaii maids having Godfather-level shootouts and the result is hilarious.
Second, even setting the violence aside, Akiba Maid War is genuinely funny in my opinion. I've been watching anime since 1996 and by 1998 I was using my parent's dial-up computer to download a subbed episodes of Sailor Moon. Anime can fall back on a lot of familiar tropes or jokes and after watching for literally 30 yers, it can get a bit stale if you see the jokes coming. I found AMW's jokes truly refreshing, and at times, I was literally snorting with laughter (quite on theme considering the main characters work a pig themed maid cafe). The manager in particular is our comedic relief character but honestly all of the characters get moments for laughs. What surprised me is that I fully expected each maid to have their own bottle episode explaining their backstories which never happened. Normally, this might be an indication of not so great writing and poorly fleshed out characters. But on the contrary, I found it gave the creators more time to develop the characters and their humor within the current narrative. The result is that every character has a (IMO) well-developed voice and sense of humor
And third, you might think that based on the two previous pros that Akiba Maid War is all laughs. But it has a surprising amount of heart that manages to avoid being cringe by sneaking up on you. Episode 5, for example, features a character's birthday where absolute absurdity ensues. But AMW makes sure to tug on your heart string, just a bit, before returning back to the chaos. Our main character and best girl, Nagomi, is the typical optimistic lead you'd expect of a character with her animation style. But the Akiba of this series is constantly saying: yeah, those heroic heroine speeches don't really work here. So in the choice moments where that pathos does stick, it's very effective and doesn't feel like the ending to another "Very Special Episode."
Akiba Maid Wars is a tight 12 episodes for folks (like me) who fear commitment. Very easy to binge in a day. As far as I can tell, it's only streaming on HIDIVE (in the U.S. I'm not sure about other countries). But if you can't decide on your next watch, consider giving this gem a try!
