The only part of Veilguard that received a positive reception, the final act, was mostly made by the Mass Effect team. Once Bioware realized how poorly development was going, they got the Mass Effect team over to Veilguard. The rest of Veilguard, the bad parts, were made by the Dragon Age team.
The Mass Effect team and the Dragon Age team have had a conflict for years. When management brought the ME team in to work on Veilguard, they immediately clocked that it's a bad game and tonally inept. Still, they seized control of the ship, excluded the Dragon Age heads, overhauled the game as much as they could in the final stretch of development, and according to that article Jason Schreier wrote, they were the main reason Veilguard was just mediocre rather than an unplayable catastrophe
This. It was very refreshing, in an environment with so much toxic positivity, to see people not sugarcoat it and actually go "This sucks, do better". That article gave me so much hopium for ME5 it's insane.
Genuinely don't know what people were expecting from another Mass Effect game. Andromeda wasn't exactly highly praised and Veilguard was bashed even harder. Those franchises are both a decade+ past their prime.
For some franchises, I think it's OK to let them go and accept that we have all of the best games that will ever come out for them. Cough Halo cough cough.
Yeah, at least Veilguard had the potential to not suck. ME5 was doomed the second they decided to have it follow up ME3 - you cannot follow up ME3 without it either being entirely pointless or straight up retconning over half the players' game. The four primary endings are completely incompatible. There's a reason ME4 went to a brand new galaxy where the repurcussions of the ending of ME3 don't have to be in the forefront.
And then Veilguard was a colossal shit show in spite of itself, retconning nearly the entire series. I had absolutely no hopes for Mass Effect after what they did to Dragon Age. Gaider was right, at some point, the rest of Bioware must have come to hate the writing team, because they set out to burn everything down in Veilguard. Honestly we're probably lucky they didn't end up getting the chance to do the same to Mass Effect. :c
Eh, plenty of sequels have picked a canon ending and run with it. Would it have made ME3 feel pointless? Probably, but frame it as a legend that nobody’s quite sure the ending of, and it’s been long enough since ME3 IRL that people would just like a new entry.
Destroy was clearly the devs’ intended choice given it’s the only one where Shepard can survive.
Wasn’t veilgaurd positively received? I know there was a lot of shouting about it but I thought it was generally considered good. It has an 82 on metacritic. Underscore is 4/10 which is suspect
Edit: the downvotes are wild. I’m just asking a question. It’s an 82 metacritic game and people are acting like I’m supposed to know it’s trash
As not a longtime fan, I thought it was a fun enough action rpg but the vibe was a bit too positive/uplifting and morality lessons were really shoehorned.
I think it was received as a generally good third person action combat game, but a terrible dragon age game. The narrative had a large tonal shift compared to the narrative of previous entries, and was generally worse.
I don’t know. I enjoyed it, but I’ve never been a DA fanboy. Most of the complaints didn’t matter to me. I liked the combat system and general story. I had my complaints as well, but overall, I thought it was fun.
