Baldur's gate 3 and Divinity original sin 2 were like, exactly what I wanted for a dragon age sequel. It's like Larian sucked the freakin soul out of Bioware.

I think both of those would have been significantly better with a more japanese-style ruleset. The US-styled games just turn into a min-maxing fiesta by design, where you have choices, but some will make the game unplayable, or trivially easy, and you better be lucky figuring out how much effort to put into builds while avoiding both edges.

That's why something thinner, like what Bioware did, works better when you are being computer centric. Don't ask people to blindly select perks or powers that might be very useful, or downright useless, based on what happens later in the game, when you've not played the game. It all works fine on pen and paper, as the DM will change things to balance out people's choices. But in a computer game with none of that, it's just filling the game with pitfalls.

Not that every company making their own system does it well: See the horrors of Bethesda's leveling systems, which each fail in a different way, but never actually work well. But it's possible to do something that mostly works, and Bioware was doing much better than most.
