Baldur's gate 3 and Divinity original sin 2 were like, exactly what I wanted for a dragon age sequel. It's like Larian sucked the freakin soul out of Bioware.
I think both of those would have been significantly better with a more japanese-style ruleset. The US-styled games just turn into a min-maxing fiesta by design, where you have choices, but some will make the game unplayable, or trivially easy, and you better be lucky figuring out how much effort to put into builds while avoiding both edges.
That's why something thinner, like what Bioware did, works better when you are being computer centric. Don't ask people to blindly select perks or powers that might be very useful, or downright useless, based on what happens later in the game, when you've not played the game. It all works fine on pen and paper, as the DM will change things to balance out people's choices. But in a computer game with none of that, it's just filling the game with pitfalls.
Not that every company making their own system does it well: See the horrors of Bethesda's leveling systems, which each fail in a different way, but never actually work well. But it's possible to do something that mostly works, and Bioware was doing much better than most.
Dragon Age fans are genuinely the most annoying shits on the Internet, because they refuse to admit they're just DAO fans and actually hate the franchise.
DAI is literally the best selling BioWare game. Not the best selling DA game; the best selling BioWare title period. It won 130 GOTY awards and was critically acclaimed. Saying it's bad is objectively a stupid take.
While I personally like DAI a lot, it won all of those awards in a very weak year. It likely wouldn’t have been nominated if it came a year earlier or later. Its overindulgent side quests and pursuit of a huge world map held it back. Thankfully the writing was S tier though, especially Trespasser.
Why? They would just made another divinity game and slap the name Dragon Age on it, just like with Baldur's Gate (not saying it's a bad game, just that it's more divinity than baldur's gate).
I think Larian is done playing second fiddle to someone else’s story, and Larian won’t touch a publisher/partner like EA with 50 foot stick. That’s the dream though, do your own stories and have your own thoughts, and BG3 gave them the money to do that.
Yes, let's band together to force talent developers with their own unique vision make Nth game from the old IP they didn't create and have no control over so we can suck all the passion from said developers.
As much as I like Larian, I feel dragon age should be action rpg oriented. Origins was fantastic, and while the combat evolved with Dragon age the stories failed to match.
Naw... I mean dragon age was good early on, but in the end it's an IP about dwarves and elves and dragons. I'd MUCH rather see Larian take a shot at the Mass Effect IP.
