Forgot about the online fee lmao. It's been so long.

PC might be a bit more expensive to enter, but that $100 a year you're paying or whatever it is, you'll offset it easily.

$700 PS5 or $1,000 PC. 6 years later, that's now a $1,300 PS5 and a $1,000 PC. Plus you'll have more games to play because they're just cheaper and a larger variety of them.

Even if you got a pre-built PC on credit or a payment plan, it's worth anybody looking to plan financially over the next few years so they can move over, in my opinion.

There's nothing a console offers now that PC doesn't do better. The only reason to stay is inertia.

Don't forget the instant upgrade of games

New GPU? New graphics options unlocked. Sony tried to make you pay $10 per game. For others, it ran and looked better if the developers patched it. Not all did

Literally the only advantage of a console was the physical games, the games were actually cheaper because of that. Remove that and yeah PC wins all the way.

The shit move is that I did appreciate Sony Studios games and those fuckers decide to remove them from PC. I was okay with that since I also got a console but if there's only digital on PS6, I won't get one.

PC wins whether you remove the at or not… consoles have just been about convenience lately, if you want to play games in their best form it’s always been PC

I'm in the UK so it's about £750 or £800. That's easily doable over here with comparable performance.

As long as you opt for DDR4 and 1TB, you can get away with an older Ryzen and a 4060.

This is basically my setup and 4K 60 FPS is pretty much standard on medium settings with some upscaling turned on.

Microcenter even has 5060 laptops on sale for that price right now. It is definitely still around. People have been posting prebuilt configs as alternatives to the steam machine that get around that price and you can still get something like a 9060xt/7600x for about that price if you line things up right.

It's still easier to game on console. I've seen literally countless discussions online about people's games not running correctly on PC and having to mess with PC settings or install this or uninstall that or delete this file or change this setting on your PC or update your PC etc etc etc. On console I literally start the game up and that's it. I work on computers all day I don't want to also game on a computern and bring along all the issues inherent to using a PC.

It might be true but if it is, I don't really notice it. Either that, or I'm just accustomed to it.

It's not at all as common as you think. I've got about 500 games in my Steam library. I can only recall 3 of them that were broken, and I had to change a setting. 2 of them were Bethesda games being weird with RTX cards, the other was FIFA, so you what do you expect from EA.

For 99%+ of games it is just plug and play in my experience.

That's typically for modding, or if you're trying to run specific games like base PS3 titles.

Unless you're super attached to Killzone or Resistance, PC is pretty much better across the board now. Just don't buy anything AMD from the Radeon 5000 series and you're good to go.

I mean, not quite a fair comparison right now seeing as RAM alone is going to set you back $1000.

This isn't really the case. Just go with DDR4 and you're chilling.

Yes it's more expensive than it was, but it hasn't seen the same ridiculous markup as DDR5.

The online fee you pay to play on consoles is the cost for the best version of an anti-cheat we have in gaming. Well worth it for the integrity alone.

On another note, how are platforms able to see some games so cheap? Could this change at any time from the source of where the game license came from or what? Genuinely curious who has final say on game pricing on those platforms.

Steam sees cheap games partly because:

  • It was the first place publishers experimented with deep discounts (90% or 95% etc). Some publishers discovered they work great for older games.

  • The player base is conditioned to wait for discounts already. Developers won't see revenue if they're not discounting.

  • There's a key resale market on PC where you can pick up any game older than 5 years for like 90% off anyway. Publishers are competing with this market so they have to price match.

Publishers set their own discounts but the ecosystem specifically rewards heavy discounts in a way that doesn't entirely exist on console.

It COULD exist on console at some point. I just don't think it's likely.

That is really not true lol hackers ruin plenty of games that have paywalls on PC.

Consoles generally have less hackers bc the ecosystem is not open like a PC. Sony can ban you for any strange software they detect on your system.

Consoles get a much less flexible system in exchange for a more streamlined experience, and bc of that there’s less mods too.

I think we’re agreeing more than disagreeing here. I wasn’t saying the subscription fee itself prevents cheating.

My point is that the closed console ecosystem that the subscription helps support provides better competitive integrity than anything currently available on PC.

Less freedom for the user also means less opportunity for bad actors. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best anti-cheat environment in gaming right now.

The sub isn’t doing much for the closed ecosystem, it’s really just a cash grab that xbox normalized. We shouldn’t make up reasons as to why it’s justified.

There really is no good reason to have a subscription for online play. The amount of money sony and msft make from microtransactions and the cut they get from the store is enough. PS3 was fine without a sub.

They charge the fee BECAUSE it’s a closed system and they can, and we all just said OK fine.
