Might as well move over to PC if you're a physical collector. Not getting disc anymore so you have no reason to be on a locked down platform.

117

u/Slight_Gap6762 Jul 01 '26

Exactly. I own a a $2500 gaming PC, I only have a console to collect physical. No reason to buy a new console. Time to start collecting for older generations.

28

u/Last_Mastod0n Jul 01 '26

Except that Sony said that they were going to stop releasing PS exclusives on PC.... RIP

72

u/boomb0xx Jul 01 '26

If everyone stops buying PlayStations then this will no longer be an issue as those devs won't want to be locked into low sales.

21

u/moleculariant Jul 01 '26

If they don't have a real clever strategy to retain the PS crowd moving forward, they've all but decided to shut it all down.

10

u/xombae Jul 01 '26

XBox will likely do the same thing.

1

u/Top-Neat-5812 Jul 01 '26

I mean they have a real chance to win back some goodwill by commiting to physical releases moving forward, kind of like a reverse x1 reveal fiasco

1

u/Educational-Knee-333 Jul 01 '26

yeah but their issue is the always online drm. while they've done steps mend that you still need it to initialize a game and for me that's just as bad as digital only

4

u/Lopsided_Hunt2814 Jul 01 '26

I don't think they'll have a problem.

2

u/beardingmesoftly Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Everybody on Reddit and wherever else nerds congregate always seem to forget that the main target demographic video games has was and will always be children. Children don't give a fuck about all these problems, they want to play games and they want to play them easily and conveniently. Children don't buy physical discs they download because it's faster. Children are the market force that drives. The adults think they're the deciding factor, but they aren't. In the eyes of a video game company they are a happy but unnecessary addition to their revenue stream.

1

u/RedHood198 Jul 01 '26

The average gamer is 36 years old in North America and 41globally. Children are, in fact, not the target demographic.

2

u/Steridire Jul 01 '26

Even most adult gamers are happy to have an easy plug and play console that costs them a few hundred bucks every 8 years to upgrade where they can easily jump in to play Warzone/ sports games with their friends. I had a PC for years, it was great, it aged out and prices are high, I'm back on console now and it's a perfectly fine gaming experience. I plop down on the couch for an hour after work, I play a AAA game I got for free through PS Plus that looks amazing and runs smoothly, PC has more to offer but console is more than enough for 90% of people.

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Jul 01 '26

They could make all their games $200 each, make everything PS2 level graphical fidelity, make their consoles out of literal doodoo and shards of glass.

The mindless masses will still buy it for $2,000

10

u/Propagandhi1988 Jul 01 '26

Yes but that's not gonna happen

2

u/getdafkout666 Jul 01 '26

I honestly think a lot of the signs point to a dying console market. So it might. Not overnight, but they aren’t doing this stuff because sales are good

0

u/iSavedtheGalaxy Jul 01 '26

They are doing this because almost 90% of their sales are digital and they probably save money by not having physical games at all vs providing them for a small and actively diminishing demographic of consumers.

1

u/TheMonkeyInCharge Jul 01 '26

Not like any of them can just choose to release discs for a PS6 missing a disc drive.

2

u/leoofjdh Jul 01 '26

That's not how that works. The devs work for Playstation, so they don't have a choice.

14

u/Naschka Jul 01 '26

If Playstation's income goes down so will there ability to pay for developers. Of course there may still be some and you won't get everyone to quit Sony but if there are enough then it is fine and it will become less.

0

u/xombae Jul 01 '26

I'm not sure if you've been paying attention, but XBox and PlayStation just shut down a ton of games studios.

The games studios literally work for them. If they have less money, they shut down games studios. They can just move to another platform.

3

u/Naschka Jul 01 '26

Yes, that is what i wrote would happen.

1

u/erichf3893 Jul 01 '26

The sales may potentially look higher for them since they are cutting out used game sales. Even if ps loses some customers

1

u/mr_falkone84 Jul 01 '26

Not happening, physical profits are about 20% per console. Yall ain't stopping shit from happening sadly.

0

u/Zalvren Jul 01 '26

Sure but let be honest, we all know it will never happen that no one will buy Playstation. I certainly hope this fucking strategy means they sold Wii U numbers but that's not happening

15

u/TheRoadBehind Jul 01 '26

Yeah this does suck. But the indie scene on PC is unmatched. I've taken a break from the AAAA or whatever those developers are at now and I'm playing one man show developed games

It's been very refreshing, I encourage everyone to try it. Games are cheap and ideas are often unique. A lot of them don't use safe route type stories and gameplay

7

u/TheMonkeyInCharge Jul 01 '26

There have been so few new exclusives this generation that I'm not sure it's enough to keep me locked in anymore.

4

u/DungeonsAndDuck Jul 01 '26

lmao yeah. i absolutely love my ps5, but i only bought it because i didn't already have a ps4. 90% of the games i play are available on ps4, and i bought most of them as pre-owned discs.

2

u/TheMonkeyInCharge Jul 01 '26

Problem is I just spec’d up the kind of gaming PC I’d want and, well, that’s a lot.

1

u/DungeonsAndDuck Jul 01 '26

yeah that's definitely the biggest problem with a PC. i've been saving up for one myself

6

u/Naschka Jul 01 '26

Then, Sony can not sell to me anymore, easy solution.

2

u/ShopKeeper1999 Jul 01 '26

None of the Console exclusive Games Made me buy a Console. And i guess this won't Change.

2

u/DaFlyinSnail Jul 01 '26

Sounds like lost money for them.

1

u/KC-15 Jul 01 '26

Such a small amount to miss out on.

1

u/ElkBusiness8446 Jul 01 '26

?? Not on release but it'll be on PC eventually if you know where to look. Nothing is truly exclusive as long as someone owns a PC.

1

u/Western-Produce-276 Jul 01 '26

Sonys exclusives aren’t good enough me for me to care anyway

1

u/JOOKFMA Jul 01 '26

Their games are nothing special anyway.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/beardingmesoftly Jul 01 '26

$2500 isn't a brag lol. I bet you talk about how stupid console gamers are for "paying for the internet twice" while buying a machine worth over 2x the price. Guess how many months of ps plus the price difference covers?

1

u/Slight_Gap6762 Jul 01 '26

The thing is, no one was bragging. As I said, I own a console too. I have nothing against console players. If they keep supporting Sony after this decision, I probably will.

1

u/BodManFeg Jul 01 '26

Where is the brag???? Man, reading comprehension really is in the shitter now a days, isn't it?

2

u/BiAndShy57 Jul 01 '26

Even with price increases a console is still cheaper than $2000. That’s the market they appeal too

1

u/Armored_Warrior Jul 01 '26

Building a PC is not 2000 thats like high-end. PCs have different prices and builds.

1

u/AdeIic Jul 01 '26

I mean PC went mostly digital with Steam like 20 years ago but we still have GOG which has DRM free versions of most games.
And you can still buy and plug in a dvd drive and play pretty much any game on disk still if you really want.

1

u/Yellow_Snow_Cones Jul 01 '26

same currently on a 4080s which is better then ps5/series x, though I prefer console gaming, but I build a new PC every 4ish years so its always good with new games.

1

u/notdbcooper71 Jul 01 '26

Because I'm not paying $2500 to play video games...

0

u/skrukketiss69 Jul 01 '26

You don't have to spend anywhere near that amount for a solid gaming PC.

2

u/SevroAuShitTalker Jul 01 '26

Sorry?

1

u/MorrowPolo Jul 01 '26

They have a point actually. When did they build it? Before or after the price hikes?

I built mine before the hikes. Spent roughly $1500 on a rig that was slightly better than ps5 so I wouldn't have to do upgrades for a while. Im sure that would run me twice that now. Built mine about 1.5 years before the hikes.

They're pricing us out of even owning a pc so they can rent those to us as well.

Its all a very shitty situation.

2

u/SevroAuShitTalker Jul 01 '26

Yeah, im more just ragging on them for a pity party comment. Obviously not everyone can afford a good gaming rig, but trying to make someone bad because they can is lame

-1

u/brickwallbimbo Jul 01 '26

If I had $2500 to spend on a gaming PC I’d be in the same boat. Frankly it feels like the PS5 generation only just got started, so I won’t be in any rush to move over to the PS6 anytime soon when it comes out.

3

u/Few-Actuary7023 Jul 01 '26

Could you even play today’s games on a $2500 PC? In today’s dollars? Wouldn’t that get you like only 8 gb of ram?

4

u/Slight_Gap6762 Jul 01 '26

Today's prices are crazy. 2500 is what I roughly spent on it in 2023 and I have 64gbs of ram.

1

u/Few-Actuary7023 Jul 01 '26

Yea close to the same here. It’s crazy to see how much my same computer costs today. 3090 and 64gb

1

u/Slight_Gap6762 Jul 01 '26

6950 xt, 64gb, i7 13700k. Watercooling.

I can't imagine what it would cost today.

1

u/Few-Actuary7023 Jul 01 '26

Probably cheaper to have open heart surgery

1

u/MorrowPolo Jul 01 '26

I spent 1500 and regret not getting another 32 gigs for another $100 or so.

I did get a newer gpu this last christmas for an old z840 server to use as a family gaming computer so I could always swap the gpu over. I cant afford more ram though....

1

u/SevroAuShitTalker Jul 01 '26

I built my PC last year for about $1500 (minus the gpu). Id guess it would cost at least 1k more since the SSD has doubled in price and RAM is at least triple or more

1

u/rvnender Jul 01 '26

Software is usually 1 or 2 generations behind hardware. With some exceptions.

So yes, a $2500 system should be able to run games just fine.

0

u/wanderingmanimal Jul 01 '26

32gb

1

u/Few-Actuary7023 Jul 01 '26

It was supposed to be a joke. Fuck what happened to this place?

75

u/LaylaLegion Jul 01 '26

Most PC users use Steam for gaming. There is no physical gaming for PC anymore.

66

u/abdurahmondev Jul 01 '26

GOG is completely drm free any game you buy there you can record to disc and its all yours till you die. and so many people use gog.

17

u/HighDefinitionCat Jul 01 '26

Yes, please support GOG. Galaxy is pretty good for cloud storage and auto updating, besides having a storefront.

In the last few years, with everything that's been going on in the world, I almost always check if a game is available on GOG before buying it on Steam. GOG has also been greatly expanding its catalogue recently, with many games that have only been available on Steam and old games that weren't available anymore and were made to work for modern systems.

Support GOG, support game ownership and preservation, and support a European company while you're at it.

3

u/Visual-Scallion1535 Jul 01 '26

Only need 130 cds or 15 DVDs to store RDR2

I suppose you could get away with 2 triple layer ultra blu ray discs, if you have the capability to write to those

But why do any of that when an external drive is better in every way?

3

u/Mind-The-Mines Jul 01 '26

How long until the cheapest HDD is $1k because of AI and the surveillance state?

2

u/AgathormX Jul 01 '26

Why do external drives or DVDs when you can just build a NAS.

Before the bubble made HDD prices creep up, you could get a 4TB HDD brand new for 80USD. 3 drives running on RAID Z1 or 4 drives running on RAID Z2 and you had 8TB of redundant storage with 10 years of warranty.

Pop that into the cheapest bundle of salvage parts that you can buy, and a decently sized ATX case and you've got enough to handle your library.
There's some old cases like the Cooler Master HAF 932 that could be modded to support up to 12HDDs.

1

u/CBJFAN2009-2024 Jul 01 '26

Before the bubble

I don't see that history repeating any time soon 😕

1

u/AgathormX Jul 01 '26

Price hike cycles for hardware always existed, this ain't anything new.

1

u/Shyphat Jul 01 '26

What's that in floppy?

1

u/Hairy-Ass-Truman Jul 01 '26

God-tier comment, thank you for this helpful information 🙏

10

u/Mystical-Turtles Jul 01 '26

In fact I think the only physical releases I ever see for PC anymore are grandma games, like those hidden object/card games. And even then I'm pretty convinced those are new old stock from 2012 still floating around at Walmart.

5

u/LaylaLegion Jul 01 '26

Bingo. Go to the PC section of GameStop. It’s just PC accessories or Steam cards.

5

u/rvnender Jul 01 '26

Its not even steam cards since steam has done away with them

2

u/LaylaLegion Jul 01 '26

Oh fuck right. Steam is discontinuing cards.

3

u/raphael333 Jul 01 '26

wait , WHAT?! I exclusively use cards I don't own a credit card and its my only way of buying on steam!

4

u/LaylaLegion Jul 01 '26

Yeah, unfortunately thanks to scammers, Steam is discontinuing the Steam Card.

3

u/Zalvren Jul 01 '26

Well thanks to scammers and likely for Steam wallet too (Steam isn't a saint company, they think only about money too). They likely didn't want to share their part with the retailers.

3

u/iSavedtheGalaxy Jul 01 '26

They've already stopped making them. Once remaining inventory is sold, they won't be available anymore.

1

u/BidnessBoy Jul 01 '26

Moving forward, just get a prepaid debit card

7

u/djkidna Jul 01 '26

True, but at least you’re not required to pay an extra subscription just to play multiplayer games online. Also you can always check GOG for games where you can backup the full installation file somewhere and never have to worry about no longer having access to it. You can even burn it to a disc if you have a disc writer on your PC

4

u/my-goddess-nyx Jul 01 '26

I know and I think that's unfortunate. My point was if you're going to be stuck with digital only, might as well do it on the better platform.

2

u/yourfriendlyreminder Jul 01 '26

The success of the digital PS5 suggests most people don't really care and will continue to buy consoles despite this news

1

u/SimilarRaspberry5657 Jul 01 '26

Yea this effects 5% of ps5 gamers and most will convert without question

3

u/xombae Jul 01 '26

Ten years ago I spent a ton of money on a gaming laptop and went out and bought a game on disk to play. I got home and went to put it in my laptop and realised it didn't even have a disk tray.

1

u/rvnender Jul 01 '26

Most desktops dont have disc trays any more.

2

u/Hana_Baker Jul 01 '26

You can always just add one though.

1

u/rvnender Jul 01 '26

I almost added one in mine, and then realized I never used the one in the other pc. So why spend an extra 200 towards it.

So I put that 200 to upgrading the ram

1

u/Hana_Baker Jul 01 '26

$200 on an optical drive?!?! What?! 😭😭

1

u/rvnender Jul 01 '26

Yes. Blue ray burners are usually from 50 to 300 dollars. Depending on quality.

I'm not going to put a cheap 50 dollar burner in a 3k system...

1

u/nathanzoet91 Jul 01 '26

A DVD +\- RW should run about $25 new

1

u/rvnender Jul 01 '26

Blu ray.

Fuck uses DVD any more

1

u/nathanzoet91 Jul 01 '26

No one really uses either anymore. Games do not generally come on a Blu_ray for PC, they came on a DVD

1

u/rvnender Jul 01 '26

Exactly, which is why I didnt put one in and just spent that on ram

2

u/guarddog33 Jul 01 '26

I've bought a second hard drive and am slowly buying a bunch of DRM free games from GOG and saving them there, my game plan is to have a miniature database of shit I can play once all the studios I like have either shut down (I'm really upset over Arkane) or have lost my consumer confidence (heres looking at you Sony)

What a time to be alive

1

u/throwawayaccount442 Jul 01 '26

There is if you just use a gog installer and put that on a disk!

1

u/getdafkout666 Jul 01 '26

But on PC there are ways to back up your games to prevent greedy publishers from yoinking them from you. That’s what physical is about. Preservation. On consoles the manufacturer can just delete your library to force you to buy the new console and they will do that in the future now that they can

1

u/LaylaLegion Jul 01 '26

Until your old games become incompatible with your PC hardware. Upgrading your system means old hardware gets replaced with new ones that aren’t designed to work with older software. So you can preserve your games but you still can’t play them ever again.

1

u/getdafkout666 Jul 01 '26

Actually you can. Right now I’m playing might and magic III which came out in 1991. Pretty much every era of PC gaming is completely playable on modern hardware if you’re willing to put in some work. There was just some dudes who dumped a truckload of obscure mid 90s CD rom games with manual scans and everything. Game preservation is alive and well on PC. Console games will eventually be as well, but they will be preserved on PC, not on consoles

1

u/ydddy55 Jul 01 '26

Exactly, if you can’t buy physical disks for console then just switch to PC anyways. Steam always has better deals and is more user friendly that the PS store or Nintendo store at least.

1

u/NEWSmodsareTwats Jul 01 '26

at least when you buy from steam they actually do the right thing and grant you a perpetual license. even if steam loses the license to make new sales for that game it's still available for anyone who bought it to download. the only time steam takes a game down and makes it unavailable is if the game itself is breaking some kind of law like infringing on the copyright of others.

1

u/LaylaLegion Jul 01 '26

They can’t anymore, remember? Last year Steam released that statement informing users that perpetual licensing was being discontinued. It was one of the catalysts for the Stop Killing Games movement.

1

u/NEWSmodsareTwats Jul 01 '26

they haven't though? they were forced to update their language on the store to comply with a California law where it no longer says that you outright own the game, but it does say that you have a perpetual license to access the game, which is what you're purchasing.

what's interesting is this is also pretty similar to if you own a game physically. part of the user agreement will say that the game company reserves the right to tell you you must destroy physical copies of your game if you violate their terms of service. and while they can't exactly send some hitmen to your house to break your game, they can just continually sue you in court for copyright infringement over and over again if you continue to use the physical copy of your game after they've told you you no longer have the right to. this is also why you're not legally allowed to copy a game disc that you've bought cuz technically you haven't purchased the game. you have purchased a license to use it that the company reserves the right to cancel at any time, same as digital downloads.

1

u/Due-Consequence8772 Jul 01 '26

Yeah but there is Steam, Epic, GOG, green man gaming, loaded, and more. There is at least some pricing competition, not just Sony and only Sony

1

u/DizWhatNoOneNeeds Jul 01 '26

No one is saying they do

1

u/IcePoemix Jul 01 '26

No need when 99% of games are easy and secure to get via piracy. The game you bought is no longer available? Okay then, I will just download it from pivigames

1

u/Neckhaddie Jul 01 '26

Yeah, but Steam actually cares about preserving your right to a game.

1

u/Forsaken_Yesterday59 Jul 01 '26

At least I can pirate games that arnt available any more!

1

u/Hamster_in_my_colon Jul 01 '26

I don’t have a disc drive on my pc

1

u/GreyGrackles Jul 01 '26

the humble usb

Me and my GF just torent games from each other or throw em on something physical anyway.

1

u/theboxturtle57 Jul 01 '26

Even though steam is the best pc platform they still are a part of the digital licensing issue.

1

u/machine4891 Jul 01 '26

Yes, physical games in general are in retreat. However huge allure of consoles was reselling physical games because et al they are expensive. Without that PC digital keys are simply far more advantageous because they're simply cheaper.

0

u/zgillet Jul 01 '26

Steam works on any computer you own. Big difference. Plus, games are all moddable and the files are accessible on your computer.

28

u/TurbistoMasturbisto Jul 01 '26

Concsoles are mostly about being affordable compared to a pc. Not everyone has the funds for a decent one. Add the ease of use from a console compared to a pc and you have to very big reasons to still own a console.

I switched about two years ago to pc, love it and it made le understand the whole pc master race because it is quite superior to console but i would be lying if i didn’t say i miss the ease of use of my console.

6

u/Correct_Emotion8437 Jul 01 '26

Sony and Microsoft trying to solve that problem, too. I’ve read it might be $1000 for the ps6 thanks to memory prices. Meanwhile, I’ve got an 8 year old desktop that’s still more powerful than my Xbox.

3

u/Rent_A_Cloud Jul 01 '26

Honestly, at prices like 700 bucks and I don't know if that's really true anymore. A PS5 isn't the equivalent to a 1200$+ pc. Even at 700 i am thinking you could probably match performance pretty well..

Remember that at release the things were close to 1000...

1

u/TurbistoMasturbisto Jul 01 '26

Not with today prices i think and that would only be applicable if you build it yourself, also something a lot of people aren’t willing to do.

1

u/Stock-Soup5721 Jul 01 '26

At release the PS5 was $500 for disc and $400 for digital. I bought the disc version so I'll have had it about 7 years by the time I buy a PS6. So $5.95/mo

1

u/AggressiveToaster Jul 01 '26

Depends on what games you play. If you get a PS5 you’ll have access to PS5 and PS4 games, but if you get a PC you’ll have access to almost every video game from the past 40 years. And you don’t need an expensive PC to play older games. Hell, I mainly play Arma 3 and the Fallout series from over a decade ago.

And in terms of ease of use, I’ll grant you that for initial setup, but that can be remedied with the customizability of PC. I have it setup so that on my bedroom TV I open up 1 app, click my PC, turn on my controller and I’m already in Steam Big Picture mode and can load up a game in seconds. My PC is in my basement at my desk btw.

1

u/TurbistoMasturbisto Jul 01 '26

But all of those things require to be set up. It might sound easy to you but some not tech savvy dad who wants to buy a gaming device for his kid is not going to do all that. Those people are a big part of the gaming community.

A console does all that for you straight out of the box. No researching components, not having to check if your device can run the game or not, no out of the blue crashes, tinkering with settings and all that. Just plug and play. Many people want that.

I totally agree that most of it isn’t that hard but it still requires some effort that a lot of people just aren’t willing to do and that’s totally fair and understandable in my opinion.

14

u/elalex1999 Jul 01 '26

You say this like a PC isn’t twice as expensive (and getting more expensive) as a console for anything close to the same specs. People legit own consoles for the affordability and convenience of it… what’s even the point

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

Consoles aren't really affordable anymore either my guy.

4

u/FroggsworthThe2nd Jul 01 '26

Ps5 is around £400 now in the UK. To build a PC around that same power is close to a grand. Its a huge difference.

I don't understand why so many people don't realise this. Thats the advantage of consoles.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

Yeah it's shit mate. The way the wind is blowing though I don't think anyone of these companies want you buying hardware at all...they want you streaming their games so they can have you on the hook forever.

With the prices of components nowadays and relative success of things like gamepass I know full well they are all salivating over the idea of pricing poorer people out of ownership. Console players are going to become serfs to a subscription and owning your own hardware will become the luxury.

1

u/elalex1999 Jul 01 '26

If you have to “switch to pc” the implication is that you already own a console, my guy

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

Just don't buy one in the first place then and commit to buying something with more longevity.

Buy once cry once.

2

u/billytron7 Jul 01 '26

Do you not still need to continue upgrading a pc to keep up with ram and gpu demands?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

Not really.

I've had my tower close to 7 years and haven't needed to upgrade it once. I've chosen to upgrade it because I felt like it but I honestly didn't need to.

Those upgrades were a processor, doubled my ram and bought a graphics card ( I went from an RTX 3080ti to a 9070xt).

I also do things outside of gaming though that benefitted from those upgrades. Just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean you have to.

As an edit to add further to this.

I feel like graphics in general has reached a plateua now where we really aren't seeing much in terms of visual improvements so good hardware can really have a long life to it if its looked after.

1

u/billytron7 Jul 01 '26

I appreciate you can keep the tower and upgrade pieces at a time. Out of curiosity, how much are these upgrades costing you?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Well gosh it's been a while.

My cpu is AM4 so using DDR4 ram and it was before RAM prices went mental. I think it was somewhere in the region of £70-80.

The CPU was about £250 and the Graphics card was £600.

Again though I'd like to re-iterate that these were optional, I could have stayed on the hardware I had, I personally just like to tinker once in a while.

I'd like throw in on top of that.

I don't pay to play online, I've had the same mouse and keyboard for close to a decade so not having to replace a controller thats developed stick drift etc etc.

My games cost less on average. The barrier to entry is much higher but I think it balances out over time depending on various factors like ps+, game pass and how often you replace controllers etc etc.

OH and I can go back 30+ years and play games from my childhood without having to hook up another machine or pay for another version of the game (usually).

I do love that you've got the access to much older games than on a console. Although I do still have all my old.consoles and games 😅

Consoles are already expensive and will be even more next gen. And at usage, they're even more expensive (games and subscriptions add up), even more if they go all digital for PS6 (those kind of shitty sales will be even worse).

Also a PC twice as expensive than the console is not for the same specs.

1

u/wolfannoy Jul 01 '26

Sadly in this moment of time things are getting more expensive than getting cheaper. This used to be the advantage of the consoles getting cheaper over time. It seems the market is throwing away that concept entirely.

1

u/AliceLunar Jul 01 '26

Consoles are affordable the same way printers are affordable.

1

u/my-goddess-nyx Jul 01 '26

Consoles are getting more expensive as well. I think in the long run you're paying more by being on console. If you want to play online you have to buy a subscription monthly or yearly. Sales aren't as frequent so more likely than not you're paying full price for games. Those shitty ass controllers are designed to have stick drift so that's another expense right there when it inevitably messes up.

3

u/Firebird22x Jul 01 '26

In my 30 years of gaming, I’ve had one controller get stick drift, and even that was only enough to be a pain in rocket league

u/billytron7 Jul 01 '26

The cost of the online subscription is less than buying 2 or 3 full priced games a year, and with both consoles you get access to a large catalogue of games included in the price, which, most often saves me from buying new games a lot.of the time as there are heaps of 'free' games to pick from. My experience with PC's in the early 2000s put me off them and been console since. I like the ease of putting a game in and it works.perfectly straight off the bat. There's no worrying about making sure I have necessary drivers or if the game optimised to run in my brands gpu and not the competitors gpu. I dont know if its still like this, but I wont be going back to pc in a hurry, at least not currently. Ive also only dealt with stick drift on one controller in that time ✌️

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

Things have changed in those 20 years friend.

It was very much the wild west back then god I remember how fiddly it was compared to my ps2 (god weren't those the days!) but nowadays most vendors have standardised things and it's pretty simple.

1

u/iSavedtheGalaxy Jul 01 '26

I've been gaming since the Atari and I have never had stick drift before.

Edit: actually I had one off-brand N64 controller go bad because of Mario Party. All of my other controllers have survived their entire console generation.

1

u/my-goddess-nyx Jul 01 '26

Everyone seems to have better luck than me then. Stick drift is a known problem for the consoles I mentioned. Now that I'm on pc I use hall effect joystick and haven't had a problem since.

2

u/iSavedtheGalaxy Jul 01 '26

I think the type of games you play might also decrease the lifespan of the controller. Mario Party destroyed my controller so bad the joystick just flopped over to the side lol.

1

u/RaceOld9 Jul 01 '26

Using the Atari or N64 as a point of comparison is a bit immaterial because old controllers like that didn't use analog joysticks with potentiometers, so they literally couldn't get stick drift. At least, not in the sense that many modern controllers can.

I've had 2 sets of joycons and an xbox controller develop it, but also other controllers that do not have any issues at all. YMMV. It's most definitely an issue though.

1

u/iSavedtheGalaxy Jul 01 '26

OK well my Switch 2, Series X and PS5 are all launch day consoles and the controllers that came with them still work. Their predecessors also still had functioning launch day controllers when I upgraded.

I think a lot of people abuse their controllers the way some folks talk about raging out when they play. Having spares also helps with longevity too.

15

u/Necessary_Refuse_962 Jul 01 '26

Moved from Xbox back in 2018. Best decision I ever made.

Even the older arguments about controller or playing on TV isn't even valid anymore.

Steam has big picture mode that gives it a console interface for your TV.

I spend half my time gaming on my TV. It's not the same situation it was a few years ago.

6

u/Gh0st_8500 Jul 01 '26

Not even just Steam, you can use apps like playnite to get a similar console experience

7

u/generic_canadian_dad Jul 01 '26

Switched from Xbox in 2016. I was die hard Xbox from release day of the OG Xbox, never thought I wouldn't have an Xbox. Sold my Xbox one a few months after and never looked back. PC is a million times better even if you only play on the couch.

4

u/Necessary_Refuse_962 Jul 01 '26

Yeah, the grass is a lot greener on the other side.

Everyone I've spoken to has always been a lot happier after the move than they thought they would be.

You see people move from console to PC quite a bit, but never the other way around.

It's really worth anyone planning for it and saving for it over the next few years, to make the switch around when the PS6 hits.

3

u/yasth Jul 01 '26

Eh I’ve heard of a few pc to console is a classic for the dad who raised a couple kids through toddler stages and no longer has a workable pc or quite enough time to bother with things.

Though honestly GeForce Now is a pretty good option for that

1

u/generic_canadian_dad Jul 01 '26

There is always a case for a good console, zero argument there. For me, switching was the best thing ever.

2

u/Thelonius_Dunk Jul 01 '26

Well, guess it finally happened. Time to learn how to build a PC and spend the next few years running through my backlog until the RAM crisis is over.

3

u/BanalCausality Jul 01 '26

It’s really not hard. It’s also not cheap. I built a pc for $1,600 in 2016 that is still going strong. I honestly only see myself replacing parts in the future, not upgrading them.

1

u/Thelonius_Dunk Jul 01 '26

That's what kept me from doing it. High price and a bit of a skill floor. But this physical media disappearance might motivate me to do it.

1

u/BanalCausality Jul 01 '26

The skill floor is more of a basement. If you can assemble Ikea furniture and keep pets off of you for a while, you can build a pc.

1

u/iSavedtheGalaxy Jul 01 '26

Not the person you responded to, but do you have a recommended source for people to learn how to build a PC?

2

u/spderweb Jul 01 '26

Yep. Force them to once again rethink not putting their exclusives on PC.

I spent 80$ this week during the summer sale. Not for one game, like I would on console. No, I got a handful. A nice variety to play solo, or mp. Casual, or action. Horror, fantasy. Etc. Just so much easier to deal with on PC.

2

u/l8on8er Jul 01 '26

well i've got a pc and ps5 so i'm all set i guess.

2

u/Objective-Night1343 Jul 01 '26

PC will be digital too 😂

1

u/my-goddess-nyx Jul 01 '26

The point is that it's a better digital platform than consoles.

1

u/eldenring1989 Jul 01 '26

“Better” subjective

1

u/my-goddess-nyx Jul 01 '26

I think it's objective in most cases. Let's see pc has mods, frequent sales, multiple store fronts, emulation if that's your thing, piracy if you what to do that, FREE online multiplayer, grey markets, multiple launchers to customize the ui to your liking. Oh and of course a gaming pc can do anything a regular pc can, that's a plus.

I was on consoles most of my life, PCs are straight up better. Only thing I miss about consoles is turning it and the TV on with my controller from bed. That's one plus I can give consoles.

2

u/throwawayaccount442 Jul 01 '26

Yep. I suggest everyone to make copies of their GOG installers, put them on disk and print a nice box. :)

2

u/Zalvren Jul 01 '26

PC is better for game preservation because of the piracy aspect at least. Even abandonwares are available.

2

u/Bitter-Tip705 Jul 01 '26

Yea I got my gaming laptop last year and I love it I ain’t played on my Xbox or PlayStation in months, the mods alone make it worth it.

The sales too although this latest steam sale was atrocious

2

u/LinkTheHero009 Jul 01 '26

Yeah the PC ecosystem is crazy. Storage of all of your emulators and games, download SteamOS and Linux for your own personal operating system, trustworthy platforms like Steam, being able to keep you games in your personal files, etc. These actions by companies like Sony might mean that tons of people just stick to PC gaming

1

u/eldenring1989 Jul 01 '26

Ok cool. Enjoy not playing any new games going forward

2

u/ANAK1E Jul 01 '26

Almost every game requires a download anyway

1

u/Mrpoindexter007 Jul 01 '26

Makes me wish I bought a bunch of physical pc games years ago. All the old superhero games I like I can’t get digitally legally. I got 3 of them for $50 like 8 years ago, now they’re worth over $100.

1

u/SkilledButton Jul 01 '26

Yep, this is the death knell for me and console gaming. I'll just buy pc games going forward if they want to pull this.

1

u/Mellanies_Redemption Jul 01 '26

The better reason to go to PC is because we have the ability to break the bullshit copyright protection, meaning we can have genuine PERMANENT access to all our games. Forever.

1

u/Falitoty Jul 01 '26

Yep, I will be as many games with Disk as posible. And only buy digitally those that don't have. But if now no Game have Disk...

1

u/alphafire616 Jul 01 '26

Sadly moving to PC is a big financial decision. You have to spend a lot on the device itself AND rebuy every single game you own to move over

1

u/eldenring1989 Jul 01 '26

You do no steam is all digital right?

1

u/my-goddess-nyx Jul 01 '26

Yes. The point is that if consoles are going to be all digital you might as well move over to PC, the better all digital platform.

1

u/eldenring1989 Jul 01 '26

Better is subjective. I prefer ps exclusives

Building a library takes time. Just like with your console library you built it up slowly over the years. Good thing pc games go on sale very often. Actually I can't remember a time there wasn't some sort of sale going on. As for the rig price really depends on what you get. I'd rather pay that big entry price and be set for years.

Ram prices are making that harder to do, I know.

1

u/developRHUNT Jul 01 '26

You spelled switch 2 wrong

1

u/ciao_fiv Jul 01 '26

i have my switch for physical collecting. i also have a pc tho

1

u/AffectDelicious8988 Jul 01 '26

why would you move onto PC gaming lol PC has been full digital for nearly a decade. No one has a disk drive

1

u/machine4891 Jul 01 '26

I thought that AI bubble is literally pushing PCs to its grave but suddenly Sony lend a helping hand. Once RAM and storage prices go back to normal (if ever), PC is going to be even stronger.

1

u/HeyIDoubtIt Jul 01 '26

I would do this but I cannot stand being on a computer longer than I already am every week at work.

I have an awesome gaming PC that collects dust for this reason.

The point is that if consoles aren't making physical games, the consumer might as well go to the better digital platform which is PC.

Free online, multiple store fronts, constant sales, emulators, piracy, grey market, other uses than just gaming, etc.
