No, it's completely reasonable to feel the need of physically owning what u pay for. We shouldn't get comfortable not owning what we pay for - though people like that Ubisoft executive wants us to

It's all because they don't want leaks. They feel that some shipment of games will "fall off the semi" and get put out there early. So they want control over it. Some even speculate they might have disks later in 2027 after its been out. No clue how true that claim is.

I hear you but its not like the entire game would be on this disc anyway.

These days all physical copies are are game codes on a piece of plastic.

that's not true. 80% of physical PS5 releases are ON DISC. There's a site that keeps track of every release

How many of those require you to connect to the internet for a day 1 patch?

You can still play what’s on the disc. You don’t need the patch to play. The patches are just to fix bugs they couldn’t address in time to ship the game.

Even if you have a disc you still don't own any game you've ever bought.

Yes and no, you own the license to play that game, and it can be revoked. I agree its bullshit but legally you have never owned a single game in the history of video games. Now because you own the physical cartridge they can't take it away from you because that is what you own. You do not however own the game itself, you own the physical media the game is on, and the license to play that game.

I can assure you that Nintendo can do absolutely nothing to my copy of Pokemon Yellow. It's literally impossible 😂

You're purposely misconstruing what they're saying. Nobody is claiming to own the IP by purchasing it on physical media. They're saying that by having no option to have the game locally on disc, there is no guarantee of perpetual access to playing the game. For example, if my internet is out of the servers are down, I can still play most of my PS5 games because the game files are 100% on disc.

That's hilarious.

I have a copy of Flashback for the Mega Drive, that I've had since 1993.

Do I just... not own that, no?

What about my copy of Pro Evolution Soccer 4 on PS2? Does that not belong to me either?

Or every single game that I have sitting on my bookshelf between the early 90s and today. None of them mine?

Whomever owns them better come back and get 'em, then.

Nope you own the physical media, license of the game, and the right to play that game and move to other places. The company owns the game, you own everything else about it. Say it with me now, you legally do not own that game, you own the right to play the game and the physical item the game is on.

"Say it with me now" fuck off ya stuck-up ride.

The company can’t come and reclaim their game. They have no way to prevent anybody from playing it after they bought it.
