Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Your license needs to be suspended for AT LEAST 6 months to cross a traffic light in BROAD DAYLIGHT when the lane right beside you was already stopped....

git gud at reading rules

edit - it is supposed to be evo driver but autocorrect changed to evil but now i think that driver is evil as well

So I took homework seriously, did everything on time, made sure I understand content, specifically prepped for the math 100 midterm for a week and I still think I’ll barely get a 65. Meanwhile I haven’t made any friends,or explored vanc or played games or focus on extracurriculars. Like how tf is it possible to have a life but still get atleast 70s in tests

Yesterday I got shot in my hand

I was just going to class

Just another funky day

A spike of electricity

Going all the way up my spine

And it made a little hole on my hand

As I placed my hand on the classroom doorhandle

Jesus whispered ye of no faith

“You wiped your ass with the church calendar page from your backpack at the public washroom”

So hold my wine I’m giving you

Starirarirarirarira

Static shock

But I have midterms tomorrow so I need to go to class

Ye need soul cleansing baby

Ye haven’t showered for 2 days

But your soul is more dirty

Ye wiped your ass with Jesus's face

Ye wiped your ass with Jesus's face

But oh no jesus please don’t do that to me

There was no toilet paper

You said you treat all humans fairly

If you gave me toilet paper

I wouldn’t have wiped my ass with your face

Wipe my ass with your face

Ass with your face

Discussion I just signed the coop offer. should i drop all my courses now?

Like it starts in Jan, its a full stack soft dev coop.

like do I drop all my courses and enrol in the coop course? i dont know what to do?

Incase people wonder. I applied to like 200 positions, and this one came like last moment. i just spray and pray. i got like 6 interviews, and over 100 standard template rejections.

I have no expcierence, 1 crappy hackathona vibe code project and one 210 project with horrible front end.

Another Math 100 Post ( I know how much ya'll love these)

Hey everyone, so I definitely just failed my Math 100 midterm. Anyone who did the same and passed the final that have some good advice? Or just general tips for studying math, I basically spammed practice questions in preparation. But obviously that did not work... thanks to anyone who took the time to read and respond.

Can we normalize basic etiquette

For context I’m a first year and I went to go review my first exam to check over the answer key and see what I did wrong. First of all multiple people stayed past their scheduled time (we had 15 minutes) which is not a problem to me at all, do what you need to do. What I have a problem with is people practically YELLING while asking the TA questions. We are in a tiny ass room and this girl is not only talking to someone across the entire room but is basically yelling her questions at the TA despite her being right beside her (ok yelling may be a little dramatic but her voice was louder then mine when I’m trying to talk to my roommates while they’re in their bedrooms on the opposite side of the apartment). And not only that but the TA was talking so loudly too, basically no one could focus on the review. Can we just have some basic respect? I couldn’t even review my examine, I couldn’t focus on a question from how loud she was being, I just left because i physically couldn’t do it. Like I said not a problem if you wanna stay past your designated time but please be respectful to others. (P.S I wasn’t the only person annoyed)

Am I being ridiculous? Is this normal when reviewing your exam (I could hear her out in the hallway). Don’t get me wrong I think it’s ok not to whisper but come on? That loud is just rude to everyone else.

can I raise my average from 81.8% to 86% in two years?

im kinda in panic for law school as most of them require 86% in canada. Allard is the only one with a distance from me that is convenient, however it is very competitive.

for context: I am in third year (poli sci major) with 54 credits, however I am maybe planning to take five years to graduate. sorry if this is vague or maybe insane, but is there a chance?

Humour How to larp and network like a Sauder student as a Computer science major?

So Im a 3rd year cs and math major and I lowkey wanna pivot into finance or banking or corporate but I wanna stay in my current major since I enjoy most of my courses and I still think a quantitative stem degree is more valuable than a business degree

No I’m not talking about quant finance specifically since Im not a math genius I mean traditional, white collar finance jobs that arent related to coding

Ive heard this is a very viable path for someone with a STEM degree but since Im mainly used to applying for technical swe positions im not as sure as how it works and what is valued for finance/econ position

I think the main thing i need to work on is my peoples skill and networking so i was thinking of larping as a buisness major in the sauder building and in events to expand my network

doea anyone have any tips for larping as a sauder student

Academic probation

• Upvotes

Hello everyone! Does anyone know a lot about academic probation?

I’m currently on academic probation, and I need to take 4 courses in Term 2 and 3 courses next summer to graduate. However, my academic status won’t be reassessed until after the summer semester begins (which might not be until June), so does that mean I have to wait until the end of August next summer to graduate?

I just want to finish my studies as soon as possible, even if it's just two months early...

(While on academic probation, I’m limited to 4 courses per semester during the winter term and a total of 3 courses during the summer term, with a maximum of two courses per half-semester.)

• Upvotes

I’m a first yr science student deciding on one more elective to take next semester to boost my average for specialization applications.

I’m willing to spend around 5–6 hours per week studying and making notes, so I’m wondering which course would be more manageable for a beginner. (no biol or astronomy background)

How do their grading schemes compare, and which would be easier to get a high grade in?

Discussion Anyone else lose interest in people and friends?

I used to anxiously yearn for new friends and experiences a lot in first year, but now that I'm in second year, I seemed to have lost all interest in getting to know my classmates/bonding with my friends in general.

I realized this recently after all my experiences with other people the past year. Everyone I meet seems so passionate about clubs and meeting new people and all that. But for me, I just dont care for clubs, small talk, interacting with professors/TAs, nothing. Im admittedly nervous about it because I know connections are everything, especially going further into my degree.

I feel that its weird because my friends, family, even the people I interact with at work, describe me as outgoing and bubbly and sunshiney and whatnot. I recently got invited to this little halloween party by one of my "ubc friends", but I don't feel excited (which a past me would be ecstatic about) nor anxious, I genuinely just dont gaf anymore

Additionally Ive been ghosting all of my friends (both old friends and uni friends) for weeks now, and I dont even know how I feel about it. It doesnt feel peaceful but it doesn't feel bad, again, I just don't care??

Does anyone else feel the same?? I just read some others' posts on how UBC students tend to be more isolating and stuff, and was wondering if this is a natural tendency of people who go here, or an effect that uni has on us? I really want to know if this is a common experience or if im just a horrible person
