I've seen a couple videos of people reacting to Airbnb hosts and some of the shit that they get up in arms about is just absolutely ridiculous. One of the hosts was getting so frustrated over the most minute things including the people not taking the trash out when there was about three things in the trash, not even bringing it up to a fifth full.

I rented an Airbnb for a month and paid a $600 pet fee. The host rated me a 1 because my dog left fur behind, and Airbnb wouldn’t delete it. That was the last straw.

Everyone that has ever stayed at an Airbnb has a last straw story. Mines was ants in the unit, a trail of ants coming through a crack in the door. Complained to the host and sent him a video of the ants marching in, he said I must have brought the ants there in my luggage.

So why do you carry ants around in your luggage then?

They're in his pants, of course

Please… you think he’d put them in a carry-on?

At least they didn't pin you with a pet fee for your ants.

Hosts can rate customers??

Yes. I had this happen to me when the host tried to ask me for $100 outside of the app for leaving the AC on after check out. I asked for proof of the high bill and they just left me on read. Support wouldn’t do anything about it or even let me provide proof. Left me a bad review and since that was my only one I pretty much couldn’t use the app after that. I haven’t directly booked an air bnb since and that was more than 6 years ago.

Yep, had a host give me a 1-star because we made breakfast the morning we left, and after we washed the dishes we left them in the drying rack because they were still wet rather than putting them up.

That was the last time I used abnb.

Yes, of course, if you're a terrible tenant, other hosts need to know so they don't rent to you.

Same with Uber, riders can get bad ratings too.

Hosts and guests can't see the other's ratings until they both submit them, or until some time passes (if only one side submits ratings).

The whole idea of Airbnb actually. And it works well untill people start abusing it like that.

Of course, trust is a two way street. Hosts need to know they can trust the people coming into their property, and reviews are how that's done. You get notified when hosts leave reviews about you and you can see them on your profile, so its pretty public information, so I'm surprised someone who uses the platform wouldn't know about it.

Mine is it was a family trip with kids. We arrived and there were cameras everywhere including outside and watching the pool. Checked the listing and there was no mention of cameras. We told the host the cameras needed to be turned off or we were contacting airbnb and leaving she made a fuss about it and eventually agreed. Didn't trust her actually turning them off so we did what we thought would turn then off by mashing buttons. Soon after she calls asking why she can't see anything on the cameras.

The place was a dump too, the pictures looked nice and when I got there the furniture was made from 2x4s and it had mice. I couldn’t use the oven because there was so much mice piss it made the house reek like ammonia.

I once got banned from an Airbnb for not taking the garbage bins to the curb. It wasn't in the instructions nor could I have possibly known when their trash pick up day was

lol had one o those, and they didn't provide trash bags, we had to bring our own.

I never put much stock in videos like that these days. So much is staged for engagement farming.

videos huh, that’s how you get the real understanding. 🙄

yeah it is. check out dryfter homes on tik tok. he's an airbnb owner who roasts people who take it too far.

Trash is trash. Regardless of "how full" the bin is. Food scraps will still attract rodents, etc.

Who knows when the owner will be back or when the next rental is? It's common courtesy to clean after yourself.

The point, I think, is that this isn’t something you have to worry about with any other accommodation. I think it’s totally reasonable to expect that someone will be there to clean the rental after you leave, and as the person paying to rent it, I don’t think it should be something you should have to think about, worry about, or take accountability for.

All that said, I haven’t ever felt put out by taking out a bit of trash.

u/SASSIESASSQUATCH 6h ago

I would hope you can expect someone should be there to clean the rental after you’ve left as I’m pretty sure every one of them or close to it has a cleaning fee as well.

If the owner isn’t showing up after each guest to make sure the house is useable for the next guess then that seems kind of negligent on the homeowner. At least if I go to a hotel I know someone went and cleaned the room and made sure it was good for a guest to stay in before I check in.

I can’t help but wonder if the people who say stuff like OP vacuum, wash, and detail rental cars before they return them.

u/AckerSacker 6h ago

If the host is incapable of handling something so unbelievably minor then they have no fucking business being a host. They DID clean after themselves, because they put their garbage in the trash.

4

u/digital121hippie 6h ago

cleaning people can fucking clean it up and take it out.

Why would you care when the next rental is? That's the hosts responsibility. They will surely come and sort that out when the guest leaves. That's what they're paying for.

"Who knows when the owner will be back?" - what on earth are you talking about? Aren't they renting out their space? They have to arrange what happens when the guest leaves.
