Yup. First time I used it, they required vacuuming, taking out the trash, and all sorts of stuff... but there was a cleaning fee anyway.

That’s wild. I will not be vacuuming somebody else’s carpet. Maybe if I accidentally made a huge mess.

I once saw someone reacting to one of these Airbnb hosts short form videos and one of the hosts insisted that the people staying there needed to sweep and mop all the floors, wipe down all the counters, take out all the trash and do all of the laundry including all of the bedding. They were also charging $1,200 a night.

Genius, get paid for others to maintain your property.

$3300 waste disposal fee because you didn't bring the old shingles to the dump.

That grass isn't going to cut itself, you know

I have a theory that these are the same people that get mad if you don't return your shopping cart.

11

u/NarwhalSquadron 5h ago

Returning shopping carts is a completely different matter.

no, it'd be the other way around and these would be the people who leave them all over because its "not their job" to return the cart. Doesn't matter cleaning their own property WOULD be their job, their inflated ego's dont work that way, everything is someone else's job to them.

People who do not return carts are disgusting

Ill start a dishwasher, take the trash out, gather the towels in the tub and strip the linens. Thats it. It also what I do in a hotel, minus the dishwasher. I'll even go as far as starting the towels in the washer, but only if required.

The rest of this is absurd.

21

u/WazWaz 5h ago

You do all that in hotels? Why? People are paid to do that.

3

u/Snow88 4h ago

Sometimes part of packing up your shit is getting all the not your shit out of the way.

2

u/CherryLongjump1989 39m ago

This involves throwing the bedsheets into the bath tub?

-1

u/StarGazer_SpaceLove 4h ago

Because i clean up after myself in general. At a hotel its towels and gathering trash. Do you generally just leave trash and towels everywhere at home? Why elsewhere then?

22

u/WazWaz 4h ago

No, I leave the towels on the towel rack and the trash in the bin, not "everywhere". Can you tell the difference between that and taking out the trash in a hotel?

-2

u/teetheyes 2h ago

Did you interpret this to mean he also breaks into the employee areas and starts the laundry at the hotel in addition to asking the front desk for directions to the dumpster to take out his trash, because that's clearly not what he meant

6

u/WazWaz 2h ago

Stripping linens and "taking out the trash" are pretty clear. No, I didn't make up "breaking into the laundry" or "leaving trash everywhere". I meant what I literally said, and I assumed they meant literally what they said.

No strawmen required.

u/mottledmussel 5h ago

All that stuff was also the norm for rental houses well before AirBnB existed.

I remember doing this when me and my firends got to borrow a friends grandmas place for a city festival. We left it spotless. But we got to stay there for free during a time where all hotels were charging extra, so we were very gradeful they let a bunch of 20 year olds going to a festival stay there and repaid with probably the most extensive cleaning i have ever done.

Ok that’s excessive. Doing the dishes and strip the beds fine. Even taking out trash and putting it in a bin, especially if you’re there for trash day, fine. Anything else is dumb.

54

u/Lithogiraffe 7h ago

Yeah, so why even clean?

3

u/Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot 2h ago

Because they dont tell you it's required until you arrive, and then the platform allows hosts to rate customers, enabling this bad behavior.

I had one that wanted sweeping - we were staying by a single night and left our shoes outside. We didn’t sweep. I kid you not this lady sent us photos of her dust pan full of dirt! Literally impossible. That was my final Airbnb straw

I stayed at one where there were strict check-out times because they had cleaning staff coming at a certain time after every stay. It was a crew of four people that showed up minutes after we locked the door and left (props to them for being on time). Despite this, they wanted all guests to strip the beds and put bedding next to the washer/dryer, put all dishes into the dishwasher, bag all trash and make sure every light was turned off and "extra" appliances like the toaster was unplugged.

u/sls35 7h ago

One or the other, not both.

u/AndrogynousHobo 6h ago

In my most recent Airbnb visit the host asked me to take the trash to the curb before trash day and to bring it back also. I did it because they kinda guilt tripped me and said they’d have to go out of their way to do it. I would have felt like a jerk saying no

4

u/gerbil_george 2h ago

If they have to go out of their way to maintain their own property it sounds like they shouldn't own property that's so out of their way.

taking out the trash makes sense to me. cant just let the trash pile up in the house.

2

u/shinbreaker 3h ago

I went with my girlfriend's family to a townhouse near a snowy mountain and the cleaning person was there right before our checkout time but we still had to go dump the trash like five minutes away. Just, what?

2

u/Doctor_Kataigida 1h ago

There are a couple things I think are reasonable. Start the dishwasher, take out the trash, I don't see any issue with those. It's anecdotal but I've stayed at a decent number of airbnbs and have never had to do shit like vacuum or laundry (I usually strip the bed but that's about it).

1

u/lozo78 2h ago

The trash I can understand. Maybe loading the dishwasher. But everything else is bullshit.

We were vacationing in a high end hotel in Okinawa last year and there’s an option for not having your room clean every day, if you pick this one you’ll get discount.

Charging guests cleaning fee after they do it themselves is crazy.

-10

u/Dewnami 7h ago

I’ve stayed in probably 50+ airbnbs and never been asked to vacuum. This whole cleaning thing gets way over exaggerated. I’m calling bullshit.

2

u/ExtraordinaryOolong 4h ago

I've stayed in 50+ Airbnbs and I've been asked to vacuum once. It does happen.

1

u/Doctor_Kataigida 1h ago

Once out of 50+ times sounds pretty solid tbh. Seems pretty on par with the rate of getting bad hospitality service in general.

0

u/Sponjah 6h ago

And a ton of downvotes of course, I’m the same been in easily 50+ airbnbs all over the world and never been asked to do any of this stuff.

0

u/Dewnami 6h ago edited 6h ago

Yeah what a circle jerk. All grossly over exaggerated. At the absolute worst it’s strip the beds and take out the garbage.

And they act like a 15x15 box with a bed in a hotel with 200 other people for $150/night is some kind of win.
