Refusing to even mention Jade Empire but including Anthem is a rough choice.

u/Steel1000 8h ago

Including anthem at all is kind of like saying “yea we deserved it”

Last preorder ever - thanks!

u/FrostWendigo 8h ago

Right? They mismanaged the game since inception and then had the audacity to blame its failure on the pandemic. Anthem could’ve been an IP defining title like Destiny and Warframe but the suits couldn’t pull their heads out of each other’s asses to make it happen.

10

u/OutlanderInMorrowind 7h ago

what little gameplay was there was actually pretty solid but I recall completing the main stuff with a friend (via xbox gameshare) in the span of 2 days and we tried to figure out what we were supposed to do next and the answer was "you're at endgame".

3

u/No_Week3958 6h ago

Anthem’s mechanics were pretty awesome. Everything else was a trash fire.

3

u/GloriousNewt 5h ago

yea there was just nothing to do after you went through the little story there was, and it always hinted at things developing and then the story just kinda ends waiting for the next installment that never came.

2

u/OutlanderInMorrowind 5h ago

we legit thought we fucked up and missed a quest at first.

26

u/prospectre 7h ago edited 6h ago

Honestly, not sure how they fucked Anthem up. A looter shooter where everyone gets to fly around like Iron Man and customize mech suits? That sounds awesome!

Then you see what it is, how it was monetized, and you say "Oh, right, EA".

EDIT: Monetization was not much of an issue, I was mistaken.

28

u/wakito64 6h ago

The monetisation was the least of their problem. The lack of endgame, their first Maelstrom event being super disappointing and the weapon scaling being so fucked that the level 1 grey weapon had a better DPS than a maxed legendary weapon killed the game far more than a few skins being slightly overpriced

5

u/prospectre 6h ago

Ah, I seem to be misremembering then. I recalled their being a big snafu about how Anthem was monetized at launch, but I guess I was mistaken. Perhaps a little bias from EA being EA. Thank you for the correction.

3

u/mail_inspector 6h ago

The funny thing is, people were practically begging for skins or anything but there was nothing. The shop was there and they had like a couple paint jobs or whatever, but I never even knew if you could buy the currency or if you got it somehow else. And then the true shittiness of the game started hitting people and I guess they never had the chance to update the store, at least for the month my EA sub lasted.

2

u/prospectre 5h ago

Yeah, I do remember that there was just... Nothing to do. Nothing to work towards. The concept and gameplay loop was there, but because of the terrible balance and wonk ass decisions for pacing, it wound up feeling hollow.

Weird part is, that's all top layer stuff. It's far easier to balance numbers and make cosmetics than it is to create a solid core for a game...

1

u/Acherousia 2h ago

You might be thinking of Battlefront 2, which was a year or two earlier.

4

u/mandudeguyposter 6h ago

lot of game design issues, for some reason redditors never blame devs for anything

it's always the suits who are the problem

i mean most of the time it is, but this time it was shared responsiblity, whole game was a travesty

1

u/tracy_ogbert_jordan 6h ago

The older you get, the more you realize the suits generally catch a lot of flak for simply doing their jobs and herding the developers.

I can't remember, and I don't care enough to look it up, but wasn't Anthem sort of sent out to its death after they realized very late in development that the core game loop simply wasn't fun? I seem to recall there was some situation along the lines of, "yeah by the time we realized it was a problem there was no time to fix it." Or maybe they just kept rebooting the game until EA finally told them they had to ship something.

1

u/K1eptomaniaK 5h ago

Here's a Jason Schrier article on how it all went wrong:

https://kotaku.com/how-biowares-anthem-went-wrong-1833731964

1

u/Griffithead 6h ago

Also walking was really broken in the play test. WALKING!

1

u/BunnyReturns_ 4h ago

and you say "Oh, right, EA".

Whats funny is that Bioware removed flying and didn't intend to implement it, but an ea exec forced them to include it

1

u/neuby 3h ago

Anthem was a lot of fun, but it was a looter shooter without any loot. Still wish we were in the timeline where they didn't shit the bed with that one.

Also I would recommend anyone who hasn't to read this article about Anthem. https://kotaku.com/how-biowares-anthem-went-wrong-1833731964

1

u/kas-loc2 1h ago

Props to you for accepting new info and being ready to modify your stance and motives to fit the new info.

Kinda like how bioware didn't

5

u/Hungry-Luck-5481 7h ago edited 7h ago

Hahaha I hated it so much I barely played after the second week. It was old news for me when Covid hit. Should’ve gotten a refund.

2

u/Stop_Sign 6h ago

I loved Anthem so much. I absolutely love any game where movement is so prioritized and customized. Flying around and dashing was an amazing gameplay loop. It's really a shame they messed up the endgame so much.

1

u/TechnicalScale6292 4h ago

Imo it's not the suit's fault for anthem. They literally gave the studio 7 years to crap it out and the actual Dev time was just 2 years. 5 years of back and forth incompetence among the devs

First and last pre-order of my life. Learnt my lesson real quick.

3

u/CloudWallace81 Ryzen 7 5800X3D 32GB DDR4 3600MHz C16 RTX2080S VG248Q 144Hz 6h ago

Last preorder ever - thanks!

why did it take you so long?

2

u/Littlefabio07 8h ago

Yeah, I preordered it even after getting the first 9 or so hours for free with that EA subscription at the time

I liked it enough to preorder.. and then the game ended not long after that

1

u/Catweaving 6h ago

Same, I quite enjoyed the gameplay. There just wasn't enough meat on the bones to be a great game.

1

u/Sethicles2 6h ago

That can go both ways. If they didn't include Anthem, plenty of people would be like, "Why are they so afraid to mention Anthem?"

Bottom line is that Bioware was a stinky shell of its former self and hasn't produced anything worthy of note in over a decade. And for anyone who didn't care for DA: I, it's been far longer than that.

1

u/erryonestolemyname 6h ago

Bro I preordered it, and paid for EA Play or w.e so I could play it a week early.

I was that excited for it.

Egg on face moment fr

1

u/TheEternalOwl 6h ago

Andromeda was my last pre-order. And not just from Bioware, but from any studio.

1

u/dubtrainz-next 5800X3D | 4070 5h ago

Lol. Same.

1

u/_le_slap 5h ago

Same. First and last preorder ever

I'll die on the hill that the mismanagement of Anthem was a crime again humanity and biggest fumble of modern gaming. I don't know of another game that had more enjoyable core gameplay, and I've largely been an FPS purist.

1

u/rimshotmonkey 4h ago

This was the last one for me too. The Bioware I miss has been gone for a while. After Andromeda and Anthem (gifted, but still) there was no way I would buy from them again.

Hopefully a competent dev can buy the IP and make something good.

Nobody will ever learn. Kt to pre-order anything and it's maddening to me.

Fool, money, etc. i guess

u/TaiTW 8h ago

I know. Arguably one of their best from that era and it’s like no one remembers it.

I’d raise the question, “where are those Jade Empire developers today,” and expect to quickly find that they are doing important work, after 5 minutes of googling:

Exodus 2027 - developed by Archetype Entertainment

It looks like Archetype is a pretty hype gaming industry rendition of The Blues Brothers.

21

u/Alucard-VS-Artorias RTX 5090 FE | R7 9800X3D | 2TB 9100 PRO G5 | 64GB DDR5 8h ago

I loved Jade Empire it was such an awesome game.

An have very much been looking forward to Exodus, next year (that and the "Mass Effect inspired" Expanse game too).

Very happy to see that some of the staff from Jade Empire are working on Exodus.

6

u/Amdusiasparagus 7h ago

It was rough around the edges, but I also have a soft spot for it. I think the spot is even bigger in that many parts of the gameplay like the closed/open fist choices served as a rough draft for Mass Effect including the paragon/renegade choices. Had Jade Empire not existed, Mass Effect wouldn't have been as smooth an experience.

1

u/n4zarh 3h ago

where are those XXX developers today

"Former developer of XXX" is a trap that people should be very aware of. I mean, I hope I'd see something as fun as JE, but I'll be sceptic until proven wrong.

7

u/Almalexia42 8h ago

I remember it 🥲 one of my earliest games and still one of my favorites

7

u/TaiTW 8h ago

A low effort but fully playable remaster with maybe some upscaled textures released on a modern console or PC would really be all it would take for me to be happy.

3

u/thegood_habit 8h ago

Honestly with all of the AI decompiling of games, I'm surprised somebody hasn't just upscaled Jade Empire and released it already.

1

u/jasta85 4h ago

An older single game with no major IP attached to it, unless you actively look through Bioware's list of games to find it it really is easy to miss. I played it after playing Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect 1 and I just wanted to play more games from them. Good times.

43

u/AKBirdman17 8h ago

Hello fellow Jade Empire enjoyer. Fuck that was a banger, and I feel like no one I talk to ever played it. Also, fuck EA.

5

u/SadlyItsSearles 8h ago

Man it still remains one of my childhood favorites. I try to replay it again every couple of years. A shame that we will never see another one

4

u/AKBirdman17 8h ago

A shame indeed. Was a shame that they just let it collect dust too. That is dope though, what do you play it on?

1

u/SadlyItsSearles 7h ago

Back in the day I played it on XBOX. It was one of the first games I ever bought with my own money. They foil covered Limited Edition. Absolutely loved that box art.

I recently replayed it on PC though and all of the extra content that was not included in the XBOX release was a wonderful surprise. I ended up using Iron Palm and Paralyzing Palm primarily for a fighting style I took to calling "The Palmening" lmao

1

u/AKBirdman17 4h ago

Oh nice, didn't know it was on PC! I may have to give that a go

3

u/Nissan_al_Gaib 7h ago

Playing that blind was Kotor level when it came to the plot.

1

u/Ishamatu 7h ago

"Fling accretions my discretion" is still apart of my vocabulary, so I'll drop a "Don't go flinging your accretions my discretion" and literally nobody knows what I'm saying.

Thanks Jade Empire.

1

u/soaringowl 4h ago

i still listen to the soundtrack, soo many good tracks

5

u/CountGensler 7h ago

they should have used better AI prompts

7

u/GrenHamblett 7h ago

Damn, you're absolutely right. KOTOR and Jade really sold me on console RPGs as a kid. Wish it could get a remake

Speaking of, is the KOTOR remake cancelled then too or what

2

u/Raesong Dubrichius 6h ago

Speaking of, is the KOTOR remake cancelled then too or what

Technically no, but it's almost certainly in one of the layers of Development Hell.

3

u/se_endelica_dema 6h ago

I guess no one left in bioware who remember this game.

1

u/Briggie Ryzen 7 5800x / ASUS Crosshair VIII Dark Hero / TUF RTX 4090 1h ago

Some of their interns probably weren’t even born yet when that game released.

3

u/Brief-Artist-2772 7h ago

Man Jade Empire was so good. I was 14 or so and we had 3 days off due to a massive snowstorm. I binged the game. It was incredible. Them not mentioning it is absolutely criminal.

2

u/Ok-Accident3344 7h ago

Frankly, I think that’s enough of a sign that it’s time to take em out back and Ol Yeller em

1

u/damhow 4h ago

My thoughts exactly. This is why they are shutting down. The people with the power to make this post don’t love games or understand gamers.

2

u/SunnyOfGretna 7h ago

Should have mentioned Sonic: The Dark Brotherhood

2

u/realnormaljury 6h ago

Sneaking Anthem right onto the headstone next to KOTOR and Mass Effect is insane.

2

u/farnsw0rth 6h ago

I mean anthem could tie jade empires shoes for them, or perhaps fetch fuckin KOTOR a coffee

2

u/waterbelowsoluphigh 4h ago

I fucked with Jade Empire. The fighting mechanics in that game were so satisfying.

2

u/CasedLogic Intel i9 9900K | EVGA 1080Ti FTW3 3h ago

Genuinely surprised Neverwinter Nights got second billing. I love that game, and im the only person I've ever met whose played it.

Which is good for me, because it means I can rip off its story wholecloth for my DnD campaigns

1

u/Briggie Ryzen 7 5800x / ASUS Crosshair VIII Dark Hero / TUF RTX 4090 1h ago

One of my childhood friends turned me to Neverwinter, I’m glad he did. Shadows of undrentide and hordes of the underdark are still my favorite games/expansions.

2

u/Naganosupreme 1h ago

A perfect encapsulation of why they're closing and how inept and incompetent the new team was. They coasted on the rep earned by others. As have several other major studios.

If they had a grave so many of us would piss on it bc what they did is a gaming war crime

2

u/Koopadumpling 8h ago

Feels like an extra middle finger for sure, I am incredulous

1

u/Creed_of_War 12900k | A770 7h ago

Jade empire is a game I need to explore more! Played it with a friend passing the controller back and forth and had a fun time doing dumb things.

1

u/Silencer_ 7h ago

Dude I forgot they even made jade empire!!! That was the only game they ever released I liked. Had a blast in that game

1

u/Natural-Landscape103 7h ago

Probably sold more than Jade Empire as depressing as that is. Jade Empire is just completely irrelevant at this point

1

u/BartolosWaterslide 6h ago

You need to throw a bone to all of the people still employed there until just now

1

u/Galuna 6h ago

I thought that too. I friggin loved that game.

1

u/LG03 6h ago

I did a brief part-time stint at Bioware during Jade Empire's development (not to overstate what I was doing) and even I never remember it.

1

u/Maplicious2017 5h ago

Jade Empire was pre ME3, Anthem was post ME3. That's kind of the delineating point in time for when things started to go really bad for BioWare I'd say.

1

u/Kialand 5h ago

I wonder if with all the reverse-engineering going on, someone will manage to bring back a working version of whatever Anthem had at the point it closed down.

1

u/Vytral 4h ago

Actually it speaks volumes about how much the people currently at BioWare understand video games

1

u/Briggie Ryzen 7 5800x / ASUS Crosshair VIII Dark Hero / TUF RTX 4090 1h ago

Ball knowledge.
