True but we haven't really had as much of an equalizer to big companies as we do now.
Surely Anthropic, OpenAI, and others are big companies too, profiting off the lazy dopamine hits of false productivity. The project will die, as most FOSS do, because no one wants to spend their time (or money) on it. I don't understand why people are ready to stroke off a huge company just because they hate a different large company. I've been a FOSS dev, it's arguably worse now than ever with project abandonment.
Also, Affinity exists, and it's nearly perfect for most people, even professionally. It's backed by a real company with real motivation to compete. I mean, it's not a 1:1 ripoff of Adobe products, so your muscle memory won't be the same, but it's great. I bought the lifetime license for all 3 software they sell for $160. That's less than the early cancellation fees of Adobe Cloud.
But whoever is the UX director for GIMP should be fired.
What's really sad is that GIMP wasn't originally purely a photo editing software, it was as GUI demo of GTK, the UI library it is based on... that's the extra crazy part
I'm a professional designer, and although I use Adobe for my job, my personal projects are done with affinity. I purchased full licenses to their 3 programs a couple years ago.
However, Canva bought them last year and im 99% certain it's a subscription service now, just like Adobe. It's a freemium + subscription add on model.
There is A subscription, yes, but that is only for canva AI. And this makes perfect sense because it runs on Canva's servers so it costs them resources. Local AI like object selection is still free.
So stop spreading misinformation. Affinity, the application, is free. Only the AI stuff is paid if you want to use it. It's a great program.
