Btw. I used it to make this meme on macOS. It's actually not bad.

This is paint level editing.

Not even paint level. Like an “reverse engineered” paint app level edit could’ve been better

There's no Paint on macOS.

No, I'm saying that making this meme with Photoshop isn't indicative about anything. No one uses photoshop for something this trivial

I know it's trivial. And yet I don't like the alternatives to do this with. macOS has no image editing software implemented.

Officially? No. But there is at least one option that's better than an AI crack of PS.

photocraft wasn't reverse engineered from Photoshop though, so I don't get the meme?

That’s what photonstudio is for

This is what I read in the "news". Someone used AI and other tools to see what PS does in the background and "reverse-engineered" it so.

The Playstation / AnyPS5 thing is people "reverse engineering" (actually decompiling) code using AI. As I understand it, the photocraft thing is just someone recreating what Photoshop does, using AI.

The news often gets things wrong. The author supposedly had AI "watch" how Photoshop works and try to relocate that behavior. Reverse engineering the binary would get a quick cease and decist from Adobe.

Cleanroom reverse engineering is legally above board.

Correct, but decompiling the binary and DLL taints the clean team.

I guess to me reverse engineering doesn't mean you looked at a screen grab of a software package and made your own from that, which is what the project did. I always think of it as looking at a binary to see how the code itself works, then making your own code from that.

You're conflating reverse engineering with decompiling.
Reverse engineering covers any method of recreating something, including building it from scratch from a screenshot.

Decompiling is just another method of reverse engineering.

Yeah, it's just that the reporting of the software makes it sound like they just took the binary, put it into Claude, and got a clone. Decompiling and rewriting the project. That's not what was done.

Im disagreeing because i've not reversed jack shit from adobe and i've contributed quite a bit

I tested out the spreadsheet editor the other day. It's not bad for an early project
