ಠ_ಠ Another pair melted. I don't know what's happening.

My dish washing gloves. This is the second or third pair that has done this. ...

You should contact both manufacturers. This reminds me of the scissors that would spontaneously catch on fire

Edit: thank-you reading everyone's panick is exactly how I felt

You can't just leave us with that info without giving more, what the fuck?!

Last year or so, there was a pair of 3M scissors which a Reddit poster said spontaneously combusted on his table. There were some folks who suggested it might have been an incompatibility in the materials. But the redditor replied back some time later that 3M was unable to replicate the failure mode nor determine the root cause. Some people stipulated it was a hoax, but I remember the thread. It didn't seem like a hoax to me. I have seen some weird exothermic reactions in my day.

It was something with the handle material if I remember right. I came across something about it on a crafting site at some point.

6

u/BafflingHalfling 15d ago

That was the leading theory, I think. But I don't recall whether it was replicated.

6

u/Mondschatten78 15d ago

I don't recall either. A google search (for what it's worth these days) didn't really return anything besides that set of reddit posts, and some random other posts and videos talking about it.

Bro if my scissors caught on fire and I didn’t have an explanation I’d be so scared to just exist

Don't leave us hanging! Us pyros need storytime please

4

u/BafflingHalfling 15d ago

Ha. Well, most of them were not super energetic and just melted shit. Got the wrong ratio of a catalyst one time and the reaction kicked off way too soon.

Well, there were a couple spicy ones. The most fun one was when the scrap polypropylene dumpster caught fire. The fire department just had to let it burn itself out. Never did find out the root cause, probably some undercured marerial finally kicked over. But the next day the dumpster was basically sludge and the concrete under it was seriously damaged.

Apparently the scariest one was before my time. They had an aluminum dust waste receptacle that got moisture from flood waters. That one apparently had hazmat crews out and everything.

There was a really bad one with two injuries that I don't like talking about. Let's just say, remember to follow the arc flash prevention guidelines when working around combustible dusts. That one wasn't just a random exothermic reaction of course, but it was quite vigorous. :(

Thank-you. I forgot I commented. I specifically remember multiple people having the same thing happen with the same scissors. Op actually had witnessed it or had strong evidence. 3m did try to replicate and couldn't get it to happen.

2

u/BafflingHalfling 14d ago

That was my recollection. I didn't feel like it was a hoax. Just a very rare thing

u/gaming_pan 14d ago

Thank you. Thats horrifying.

Excuse me what

I think back in the day thee plastic part of a pair of scissors was made of some type of plastic that would start on fire.

75

u/generationlossfan 15d ago

I’ve never heard of this but I’ll assume it was an issue with the plastic heating up because of the friction of both ends of the handle rubbing together, causing it to ignite. That’s crazy

u/i_cant-stop_eating 15d ago

How fast are those kids cutting paper during craft time? 😂

24

u/HeadmasterPrimeMnstr 15d ago

Brings a whole new meaning to "let them cook."

and poof, he’s no more

8

u/Still-Grass8881 15d ago

considering they're on ritalin and adderal, quite fucking fast

17

u/za72 15d ago

well... I usually slow down and start taking my time

6

u/DrinkingSocks 15d ago

Right? My dose just got upped and I am feeling so fucking mellow. Apparently my racing heart was actually just stress from trying to hold it together.

1

u/FlamingWeasel 15d ago

I lost insurance so no more Vyvanse and I did not miss the heart racing anxiety 🫪

11

u/taozentaiji 15d ago

Yeah, that's not how stimulants work when you have ADHD

1

u/Still-Grass8881 14d ago

How about jokes? How do jokes work?

1

u/taozentaiji 4h ago

If they're funny and don't actively contribute to the stigmatization of taking necessary medication, sure! Let me know if you see one

2

u/Impressive_Cod_914 15d ago

Nope. That's how we know my child's meds have worn off!

2

u/Enigma_Stasis 15d ago

I scrolled too fucking fast through here because I got bored and saw "adderall" in your comment.

As an Adderall-bodied individual, I hope you had the most okayest Tuesday that ever Tuesday'd.

1

u/i_Praseru 15d ago

Adderall definitely does the opposite bud.

1

u/Still-Grass8881 14d ago

Not to me :D

1

u/generationlossfan 14d ago

Yeah, umm, that’s a dosage issue, talk to your doctor because meds like that aren’t supposed to do that.

1

u/Still-Grass8881 14d ago

Doctor??? :D :D :D

1

u/psiviglia 15d ago

Very fast! Everything is faster now!

47

u/CaeruleumBleu 15d ago

Not back in the day and not from friction either. Would happen while the scissors were left alone.

Like 2 years ago 3m sold a package of multiple scissors and one of them had clear plastic.

Per some reddit posts about it, some people were working on chemistry related theories, but the handles were clear plastic and so there is also the chance that it was magnifying light.

6

u/EatYourCheckers 15d ago

Also my theory on spontaneous human combustion. Clear scissor packaging targeting light on drunk victims.

32

u/cmoparw 15d ago

Sounds more like some kind of unstable plastic, probably chemical reaction fire. I've had cheap plastic cups, some clear acrylic deal from Walmart, that melted when in contact with my cabinet liners, so scissor handles reacting to something wouldn't surprise me

12

u/BDiddnt 15d ago

That's what it was actually. A chemical thing

17

u/SpewMagoo 15d ago

Nitrocellulose likes to catch fire very easily. You ever see a tortoiseshell guitar pick go up in flames? They're crazy

3

u/BDiddnt 15d ago

It wasn't. Its on Reddit somewhere

1

u/totesandhose 15d ago

Nah, look it up, there should be a reddit post from a couple years ago about it. Iirc, at the time I saw it there was still no 100% answer but someone left a pair of scissors on their desk or table and it burnt it just by sitting there. I think I remember someone else posted something similar but not totally sure, but if it was a karma farm fake post, OP really did a good job to seem legit in the comments.

1

u/Cautious-Paint9881 15d ago

Is this an episode of iCarly? I didn't know that was a thing that happened often with scissors!

2

u/Nazgog-Morgob 15d ago

It's not a thing that happens often

6

u/cream-of-cow 15d ago

We didn’t start the fire, it was the kitchen shears that set off the flares

6

u/SpaceboyLuna0 15d ago

Plastic Scissors, Al Capone - deflagrate on their own. Kitchen fire - what a day. What else do I have to say!? We didn't start the fire...

1

u/anothersip 15d ago

That's pretty wild, I hadn't heard of that. I don't doubt it a bit. I mean, plastic does start out as petroleum/crude oil, which is highly flammable... So that kind of makes sense to me...?

The spontaneous combustion part is pretty crazy, though. For sure. Normally you need a heat source to spark combustion, but sometimes it's purely a chemical reaction between random household items and chemicals (like bleach + ammonia. or this other crazy one I learned about recently: oil-based finishes leftover on rags after using them for finishing wood. apparently they can just... burst into flames randomly if left out when finished using).

2

u/shadowwolf_66 15d ago

With the rags they have to be in a pile. When oil based finishes such as boiled linseed oil dries, it produces heat that can then start the rags on fire. I always put them in a metal can with a lid when I was finishing trailer decks.

2

u/anothersip 14d ago

Ahh, true that.

I've not worked with boiled linseed oil, just polyurethanes and oil-based varnishes. I have been wanting to try it out, though. I'll definitely keep in mind that it will heat up while curing.

I had to Google it 'cause I hadn't heard about that reaction: apparently it hardens through oxidation (so, chemically) rather than physically drying. And when you have a pile of rags, the rags act as an insulator, so the heat builds. Suddenly, flames.

Makes sense. Still... New fear unlocked!

3

u/Shivvermebits 15d ago

I had the very same reaction

u/ManagementRadiant573 15d ago

I need details…

Fire beats scissors and paper, but rock beats fire

2

u/Mean-Vegetable-4521 15d ago

Pardon? Scissors?

2

u/MuchWow81 15d ago

Ha i remember that one

2

u/Anonymisc34 15d ago

The what that would WHAT?!

2

u/Entitled-Prick 15d ago

THE SCISSORS THAT WOULD CATCH ON FIRE.

2

u/Anonymisc34 14d ago

I laughed way too hard at this.

2

u/Joe20girl 14d ago

I clicked off reddit just as i scanned this comment and did a wait what?,and came back to make sure that i had read it right.

1

u/JuicyJaysGigaloJoys 15d ago

Did that ever get resolved? I know he got a gift basket and there was some thorough testing done but I never found out why they spontaneously caught fire

1

u/NumbDangEt4742 15d ago

Well, fuck, now I have to go research spontaneously combusting scissors. What world this is!!

1

u/Working-Glass6136 15d ago

This reminds me of the scissors that would spontaneously catch on fire
