You have accurately described the brain drain caused by private equity/venture capital/etc. Those people used to be engineers or chemists or physicists, now they write algorithms to make money.

I have a friend that is an expert in their field, biomedical research. He makes significantly less than a mutual friend that works as an analyst at Bridgewater.

We don't need medicine that can help humanity, we need slightly higher returns for shareholders

I mean if you found your own biotech which many experts do and it actually works then you’ll make a lot more than an analyst

"and it actually works" is doing some very heavy lifting here. That business is hard. Really, really hard.

Yeah, well that’s kind of my point. If you’re an expert but can’t make anything that actually works… you’re not really as valuable

It’s not about making things what work. Biotechs make plenty of useful things, but cultures and therapy drugs are not sexy to investors, and they aren’t going to be the next Ozempic for sure.

It’s not that simple. You need massive investment and incredibly specialized equipment, plus a partner to handle the business side. It’s not something that “a good idea and a garage” is going to start.

Yeah, more than a few very smart college friends who went into "tech" to "change the world." They basically just work for the world's largest ad agencies figuring out how to maximize user engagement.

My buddy was explaining his project to improve user-retention on their social media platform. I just asked him, "what are you doing man?"
