This month: Advance Wars

Just play regular campaign, Advanced Campaign is next level stuff and I'm not going to require that. Lol. We also won't be messing with the final Rivals! mission, which has to be unlocked in a very specific way. Definitely check it out if you're not familiar, but we won't do it for points this month.

Campaign mode is available after you complete Field Training. If you're already familiar with the game and you don't want to do Field Training, just tell Nell that you don't want to do it, and then you can finish just the last mission to unlock Campaign.

Choose any mission path you want to when you have a choice.

half point: Complete the third mission in Campaign (Air Ace) and have Max join your team.
1 point: Complete the Kanbei's Error? mission in Campaign.
2 points: Complete the Final Battle mission in Campaign. (must be completed and posted in October.)

Collection My collection so far 😸

My Nintendo handheld collection so far. I believe I'm only missing the base New 3DS, and the New 2DS XL to have at least one of each. From the older ones, the only one missing was the Game Boy Micro that I shared in the other post.

I hung them on the wall using wire grids in acrylic cases due to a lack of space to display them. Apartments here in Japan don't have as much space as I'd like within my budget. 🥲

Games My Childhood Dream Collection

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

In my childhood i only get like 15 games in 5 years. Lot of games i finished was traded (like Game Stop) and swaped or loan from friends for a week or from like blockbuster for a couple of days.

My dream was to have all the games i want. About 25 years later i began to collect a Game Boy with usb-charging-battery and some games. In den last 2 years i collected much more. My Goal are 100 Games, now i own 90. I also got many more items:

Game Boy IPS
FunnyPlaying Game Boy Color
2x Chromatic White
Camera
Accu Pack (works with new eneloop batteries)
Carry Case
Light May
4-Player Adapter
Headphones
Link Cable

My favourite game Metroid has a reproduction of the Box and inlay, manual was from the 90s in my basement and the game is like the other ones from ebay, all with cases. I have the map of Mystic Quest and four nice tin boxes. Not to forget an Everdrive GB X7.

Unfortunatelly games like mega man 4 & 5 are too expensive for me.

Money? 1000€ at least (i´m from germany).

Not shown: Game Boy Advance SP NES Style with IPS display and a Flash Card.

Hey everyone. The SMB 3 E reader cards are such a rad concept, but going the authentic route is just too damn expensive. I put together this little device that holds and uploads all SMB 3 E reader cards. Also I fenaggled Astra to make e reader level cards for all of SMB1. This is a cool little project I figured you guys would appreciate it.

Side note: the USB is just for power.

Edit: if anyone is interested, here is the code and some ai slop instructions. Please let me know if you have any questions. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1o0qSRlxE6zDRGc0qvsdU74u96S4ubiz-?usp=drive_link

Mod/Modding GBMAKE — Free simple editor + affordable DMG custom boot logo carts

Thumbnail

I’ve seen a ton of posts about custom DMG boot logos, but most options either don’t come as finished carts, cost way too much, or are a pain to edit.

We built a free, easy editor paired with these cartridges.

You can easily give your Game Boy(dmg / pokect ) a unique startup splash screen (boot logo).

It works great as a thoughtful gift. If you make games with GB Studio, it’s a quick, fun way to polish your homebrew release.

Or honestly? It just looks awesome.

Troubleshooting Chinese Pokémon Emerald Rogue GBA cartridge failed FlashGBX write

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I bought a Chinese reproduction GBA cartridge containing Pokémon Emerald Rogue from AliExpress. I wanted to update it to Pokémon Emerald Rogue v2.2.1, so I backed up the original ROM and attempted to flash the updated version using an Aurioxin GBxCart RW v1.3 with FlashGBX.

Unfortunately, the write failed, and now the cartridge is no longer playable. Even worse, I can't seem to write any ROM to it, including the original backup that was working perfectly before the update attempt.

My hardware and cartridge details:

  • Flasher: Aurioxin GBxCart RW v1.3
  • Software: FlashGBX
  • Cartridge: Chinese Pokémon Emerald Rogue reproduction from AliExpress
  • PCB marking: AGB-E05-01
  • Flash chip marking: appears to be MSP54LV256
  • Target ROM: Pokémon Emerald Rogue v2.2.1
  • Original ROM backup: Yes, backed up before attempting the update

I've been trying to troubleshoot the issue, but nothing has worked so far. I've:

  • Cleaned the cartridge contacts.
  • Tried a different USB-to-USB-C cable.
  • Tried using a different computer.
  • Attempted to write the original ROM backup back to the cartridge.

I also checked the available FlashGBX profiles, but I couldn't find one that clearly matches both my PCB and flash chip. I found profiles mentioning MSP54LV256, but they seem to be intended for different PCB types.

At this point, I don't know whether the problem is an incompatible FlashGBX profile, a limitation of this particular reproduction cartridge, or an issue with the flash memory itself.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of cartridge or know how I could recover it?

Specifically:

  1. Is there a compatible profile for the AGB-E05-01 PCB with an MSP54LV256 chip?
  2. Could using the wrong profile cause the cartridge to become unreadable or unwritable?
  3. Is there a way to restore the cartridge without replacing the flash chip?
  4. Why would the original ROM backup fail to write back, even though it worked before?

I'd appreciate any suggestions. I can provide photos of the PCB, the chip markings, and any FlashGBX error messages if needed.

Thanks in advance!

I wanted to get everyones opinion. Found my old SP a few weeks ago to play some Pokemon Emerald. it already had a broken hinge where it connects to the top shell, but dropped in onto my desk and more of the shell broke off including the cable cover. Want to know if people recommend repairing it or just reshell. Ive heard the aftermarket shells arent as good as the oem ones and i feel a bit sentimental to the oroginal case even id its broken. Let me know what you think.

Questions Playing GB/GBA cartridges on TV

Is there a way I can play gameboy games on my tv with a controller? I’ve seen a GB cart reader for a computer but I’m keen to find something like the N64 transfer pak that will work with all games.

Anyone know anything?

Cheers

Mod/Modding MediaBoy got a big update!

MediaBoy got a big update over the last few months. I noticed that someone posted my project here 3 months ago, so I decided to share an update. Videos now convert to ROMs with sound, faster and at noticeably better quality. You can see the ROM size before you build and choose what happens if the video doesn't fit. The music player was rebuilt from scratch with playlists, cover art and much louder, cleaner sound. There's also drag & drop, a cancel button, one-click dependency setup and a command-line mode.

Mod/Modding Working on a new Game Boy Color battery indicator mod

Post image
45 Upvotes

https://imgur.com/a/eWS8xg5

I’ve been working on a new mod for the Game Boy Color called PulseGBC, and the first prototypes are nearly ready for testing.
The idea is to replace the original red power LED with something a little more informative while maintaining the console’s original appearance.

PulseGBC uses a dual-color LED to indicate battery condition through eight stages, gradually transitioning from green through yellow and orange to red as the batteries discharge.
The LED also features a breathing effect that changes with battery voltage. At higher voltages, the pulse is slow and subtle. As the battery level decreases, the breathing gradually becomes faster and more pronounced. When the battery reaches the critical threshold, the LED switches to a distinctive red double-heartbeat pattern to warn that shutdown is approaching.

The mod supports standard AA alkaline and NiMH rechargeable batteries, along with a selectable profile for certain lithium-ion battery configurations.

One limitation is that not all lithium battery solutions behave the same way. PulseGBC monitors battery voltage to estimate remaining capacity, so it relies on voltage changing as the battery discharges. Some lithium battery mods provide a regulated, constant-voltage output regardless of the battery’s actual charge level. These configurations aren’t suitable for accurate voltage-based monitoring because PulseGBC cannot determine the battery’s condition from a voltage that remains essentially constant until shutdown.

The lithium profile is intended for compatible single-cell Li-ion configurations where the monitored voltage follows the battery’s discharge curve. Standard AA alkaline and NiMH rechargeable batteries are supported through a separate profile.

Everything is controlled by a small microcontroller mounted on a compact flex PCB that fits inside the Game Boy Color. It uses the original LED location, so no external displays or shell modifications are necessary.

The first version of the firmware is up and running, and initial electrical testing has been promising. I’m currently waiting for the PCB panels to arrive so I can assemble the first prototypes. Once they’re installed in a working Game Boy Color, I’ll be able to fine-tune the LED animations and color transitions, validate the battery thresholds, and measure the actual critical-warning runtime before finalizing the design.

I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on the design and whether this is something you’d consider installing in your own Game Boy Color!

Today I finally bought the old Nintendo handheld that was missing from my collection. It was painful, but I finally got it. 💸💸💸💴

I currently live in Japan and the prices here are ridiculous. Even in hidden shops out in the countryside, it feels like everything has turned into a tourist trap.
