TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR FOSSIL IDENTIFIED — READ BEFORE POSTING

  1. Put a location in the title! This is the most important thing by far. If you know the geological formation, that’s awesome, but even just “near Miami” or “label said Morocco” is really helpful.
  2. Take a bright, clear photo. Good lighting, a plain background, and sharp focus will always increase the certainty of an ID. If it’s weirdly shaped, photos from multiple angles help too.
  3. Include an object for scale. I usually use a coin, but anything will do (but things that come in different sizes, like hands, are less ideal). If you forget, you can always measure it and add that in a comment. (Don't use keys; they can be duplicated from a photo.)
  4. Don’t take a video. We can’t zoom in and the quality isn’t great — a gallery of photos on Imgur is way better.
  5. Many fossils can be dull and hard to make out. Try (gently) getting your fossil wet and see if you can get a clearer photo.
  6. Don’t be dismayed if your “fossil” turns out to just be a rock! Rocks are cool too, and if we don’t know exactly what kind of rock it is, the good folks at /r/whatsthisrock probably will.

Found in the south of the island of Brač in Croatia.
The non scaled side has tiny spirals on it.
It’s not really heavy.

Any guesses to what this is? Is it just a big rock or a fossil?

Found with a mixture of rocks likely from the Compton formation and possibly Cotter formation. Possible Bivalve or something? Thank you in advance, I would just like to learn as much as possible about the formations, fossils, and minerals involved!

Not sure how to identify fossils

I found these in the waubonsee creek in Illinois, which I’m pretty sure is clay and limestone.
Pictures 4/5 Im not sure is a fossil, first glance I thought it was wood or bark. It is super light and porous but solid, sounds like rock if you tap it.
Also pretty interested in the last one which I assume is a vertebrae of sorts? It’s cool regardless.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Not sure why this was removed from r/FossilPorn, but I guess I’ll show off here. Crystalized bivalve, entire rock covered in crystalized fossils. Meet findi though!

Found alongside many graptolites, trilobites, an rare orthocones. My first thought is sponge? Could also be some weird regular mineral growth?

I'm suspicious it's a mosasaur tooth tip because 1) we've found some mosa bones in the area and 2) we've found shark teeth with very similar erosion patterns. But I don't know enough about the flora/fauna to be positive. I've heard a lot about horn corals for example.

Hey guys! My family has had this fossil for a while, but we’ve never been quite sure what it is. I was wondering what it is, how rare it is, and best way to care for it? Thank you so much!

Is this from a sheep, or a tyrannosaurid?

There's a bit of an argument in the comments on this one, I'm interested to see who is right. Personally the bone to me doesn't look fossilised, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. Thoughts?

Do a yearly disc golf trip with some buddies to Moab and have seen all sorts of clam fossils and other random bits of ocean/sea life over the years . First time anyone of us have seen any fossil like this! Included a quarter for scale if it helps. Can anyone ID and or age this fossil? Thanks in advance!

Not my fossil, but came across it randomly online. The person selling it had no clue or any idea about its origin either.

What animal's skull is this?

Okay this isn't a fossil technically, just a Pinterest sketch but still.

I've been wanting to get this as a tattoo and the comments say that it's a smilodon's skull but, from the quick Google research I did, it doesn't look like it? The upper fangs seem too short and I couldn't find a skull on Google that had lower fangs. I have a hard time distinguishing skills but sabre tooth tigers look sick and cool 😭
