Support Fedora 44 Doesn't utilize Nvidia Graphics Card

Thumbnail

I converted from Windows to Fedora 44 a few months ago, and have had a pretty good experience in general.

However, it was until recently that I realized that my Nvidia 4080Ti graphics wasn't being utilized in my system, I realized when I was playing Minecraft and it was chugging pretty bad lol. I've have a screenshot that says it's using the Intel MESA graphics card, which is also listed as my integrated graphics, while the Nvidia is listed as discrete. I also think is the reason that Blood of the Dawnwalker kept crashing on start up for me because the error dialog box.

On start up, I was getting akmod build fails on the nvidia graphics driver until I found this page to get my drivers all installed correctly (https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com/2015/fedora-nvidia-guide/#21-download-nvidia-installer-package). However, now when I boot my PC, it is a black screen until I swap my HDMI to the motherboard port, type in my decrypt password, and let it boot to my desktop. Then I can switch back to my HDMI and have regular graphics, but the graphics card doesn't actually get utilized.

There's also, randomly, a blacked out piece of screen in my upper right corner. Unsure if this is related to the graphics card or my monitor issues.

TIA

A couple days ago I made a post about needing help with live booting fedora, I've got 0 experience in all this but it was all js a piece of cake like unbelievably easy? Thanks to all the redditors who helped me set it up everyone was super helpful, thank you so much.

Setting it up was super easy I don't get it why more people aren't using Linux already, it's so smooth and good and I finally feel like my laptop is breathing? I've got ton of free ram UI is smooth af

I wanna install it as my primary OS now which i will after I manage to free 100gigs of storage from my SSD, I'm not a linux power user although I wish I was,. I'm just gonna use it for basic stuff browsing the web, installing some basic studying apps

Anything y'all would recommend i should do? Any apps or something else? Any other tips

A dumb question but I've got this old Android tablet and the screen is broken, can I plug that in on my laptop and use it as kinda SSD? For installing linux on the tab

Support [Fedora 44 KDE] My laptop audio is unfiltered, picks up noise

It picks up laptop noise, will pick up noise from people talking. Windows doesn't do this and I can't figure out what filters I could use to set it similarly to Windows. If worst comes to worst I'll just use headphones with a mic but I can't figure out what I should do here.

Has anyone figured out a solution?

Which method would you use to lock a file/folder that will keep out family members from viewing? I am going to use it as a diary of sorts but also I want to write a book based on my life experience and I don't want prying eyes until I finish my project.

Support Wifi Issue

I just checked to see if it was my card, but here I am typing from my usb booted fedora. So does anyone know how to fix 'limited/no connectivity'? I've seen some posts about power settings, but I've tried and failed with those.

Back at it! I'll be checking this post from my phone :)l

Discussion Fedora + Magic Keyboard

I must say, I was a Windows enthusiast for 15+ years. During that time, I also worked with Linux (Mandrake/Mandriva, Red Hat, Slackware, Debian, FreeBSD, Ubuntu). There were always things that outclassed Windows, such as the console and the powerful tools that come with it.

About 3 years ago, I switched to a Mac. I was happy to have everything I needed from Windows (Adobe, MS Office) alongside the environment I love (terminal!). Combined with the Magic Keyboard, it was the perfect setup.

After spending some time with Apple, I decided to make my way back to Linux and chose Fedora. After using the Magic Keyboard, I couldn't switch back to a normal keyboard. I was happily surprised that it is supported out of the box, although some modifications were needed. But i must say Fedora + Magic Keyboard is great.

For now i'm using this keyboard remap for Gnome:
https://github.com/petrstepanov/gnome-macos-remap-wayland

My question is there any other thing than i can use for better keyboard setup?

Support Entring emergency mode

My Fedora system stopped booting and entered emergency mode. Before that when open brave or telegram it triggers the read-only mode and cant edit my files.

I read some solutions for this problem in the sub, community and used ai but didn't work.

I used a live fedora usb . my Btrfs partition `/dev/sda3` won't mount, even read-only:

sudo mount -t btrfs -o ro,subvolid=5 /dev/sda3 /mnt/fedora

Errors include:

BTRFS error: block-group-tree feature requires free-space-tree and no-holes

BTRFS error: superblock contains fatal errors

open_ctree failed: -22

`dmesg` shows Btrfs errors, and `btrfs check --readonly /dev/sda3` reports errors in filesystem roots.

I tried `btrfs check --repair /dev/sda3`, but it crashed with `addmissingdirindex: BUGON ret triggered, value -17`.

How can I recover my files or access the partition safely? I want to recover my data before trying further repairs.

Thank you for your help.

Support Fedora KDE Plasma Login Delay Dracut-initqueue

Hello,

I am having an issue where for whatever reason, my boot times and sometimes my shutdown times are delayed by over a minute due to the Dracut-initqueue service.

Everything was working fine up until a few weeks to a month ago, when all the sudden, booting took well over a minute of time.

Looking at systemd-analyze blame brought back this:

1min 8.514s dev-disk-by\x2did-nvme\x2deui.0025385251426dd1.device 1min 7.335s dracut-initqueue.service 5.071s plasmalogin.service 864ms initrd-switch-root.service

I attempted a "sudo dracut --force --regenerate-all" to no avail.

I then found a command to run online, journalctl -b 0 -p warning..emerg, and got the below screen shots.

https://imgur.com/a/xB8O6ue

Any thoughts as to what is happening? There really isn't any new device that I've plugged in or anything that I can think of that would be causing the issue. So I am entirely unsure what the heck changed that's causing this problem.

Thank you for your help.

Support Bluetooth keeps cutting out on Fedora 44 [RTL8922AE], but it's perfect on Windows. Anyone else?

Bluetooth audio on my Legion 5 drops out constantly on Linux, especially if I move around a bit. Same laptop and same headset on Windows or my phone have no problems at all, so it doesn't look like a hardware fault. I'm running out of ideas and would love to hear from anyone with this chip.

The connection got especially very very bad when microwave was running at my house almost pointing to the fact that somehow bluetooth recovery is bad?

System

  • Lenovo Legion 5 15IRX10 (83LY), Fedora 44, kernel 7.2.11 GNOME
  • RTL8922AE combo card: Wi-Fi on PCIe (10ec:8922), Bluetooth on internal USB (0bda:d922), btusb
  • bluez 5.87, PipeWire 1.6.9, WirePlumber 0.5.18, linux-firmware 20260916
  • soundcore Q20i, A2DP with AAC [EDIT: other headsets do the same]

Symptoms

  • Short gaps in the audio, mostly when I shift or lean away from the laptop. Sitting still is usually fine.
  • Sometimes the link dies completely. The headset then ignores reconnects ("Host is down") until I forget and re-pair it.
  • Kernel log on the full drops, with BlueZ reporting "Connection timeout":

Bluetooth: hci0: link tx timeout

Bluetooth: hci0: killing stalled connection xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

  • PipeWire logs "Missing completion reports for packet... Bluetooth adapter firmware bug?", but not reliably when I actually hear a gap.

What I found using Claude code

  • With a local test tone, each gap I marked lined up with a small RSSI dip (about -50 down to -54..-64 dBm). Still strong signal, so it isn't plain range.
  • Switching Wi-Fi off and on in blind random blocks made no difference.
  • Wi-Fi on the same card reads [-65, -98] dBm across its two antenna chains, steady, and negotiates 1 spatial stream. That 33 dB gap looks wrong to me.

Already tried, no luck

  • Codec changes (AAC, SBC)
  • USB autosuspend off
  • Sniff mode masked
  • Bluetooth firmware from the Windows driver instead of linux-firmware
  • Stock setup again, with no custom tweaks

Not tried yet

  • rtw89 power save off (disable_ps_mode)
  • Reseating the antenna leads

Questions

  1. Anyone with RTL8922AE (or another Realtek combo card) seeing "link tx timeout" or movement-sensitive dropouts on Linux? Any kernel or firmware version that behaves better?
  2. Is a one-chain Wi-Fi reading like [-65, -98] normal for rtw89, or does it point at a loose antenna? Again Windows seems to work great
  3. Any btusb, rtw89 or BlueZ options worth testing?
  4. Any solutions or insights to the problem?

I'd rather fix the built-in radio than buy a dongle. Happy to post btmon captures and logs or do any diagnostic.

Discussion How do Fedora package maintainers decide which version of a package they'll use in Rawhide?

I use Fedora 44 as my Host OS, and then I have Fedora Rawhide running in a virtual machine to test patches for gnome-control-center, gnome-shell, etc. Rawhide has been awesome for this.

Today when I looked at the direnv package for Rawhide, I noticed that it's using version 2.37.1 from 1 year ago, but the latest stable upstream is 2.38.2 ten days ago and I'm wondering why. I tried building a package with the latest version myself and it works perfectly fine, so I guess my question is, is this simply a one-off scenario of a maintainer not having the bandwidth to keep up, or is there some kind of distribution-wide policy that ultimately determines which version should go into Rawhide?

Support "The session has been locked by <user>" showing up when idle?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Out of nowhere, this screen has started showing up on my pc when it goes without input for a little bit. Maybe a bit shy of 5 minutes? I've set the screen to dim after 2 minutes and turn off after 5 and this screen appears very briefly before the turning off step and afaik it's never happened previously. It does say that it's been locked by my user, but I dont understand why its showing up at all as any keyboard/mouse input immediately makes it disappear.no opportunity to press either button, not enter any password. So it's not locked at all? I'm confused and admittedly a bit worried that it might be caused by something malicious, but I dont think thats terribly likely.

Support Cannot Connect to Eduroam

Hey Guys, recently started Uni and for some reason I cannot connect to Eduroam from my Fedora 44 Apple 2017MacBook Air. It just does not connect to eduroam even though I have given the right credentials and have tried almost everything to fix this issue, and this is what I can see from my logs:

Activation: (wifi) association took too long

state change: config -> failed (reason 'ssid-not-found')

Has anyone else faced the same issue? If yes, how did you solve it? Any kind of input is highly appreciated! Thanks :)

Support Fedora 44 (GNOME) on iMac Mid-2015 (AMD): screen brightness resets to maximum on every reboot

Hi fedoras members,

I’m running Fedora 44 with GNOME on an iMac (Mid-2015) with an AMD GPU. Every time I reboot, the screen brightness goes back to 100%, no matter what level I had set before shutting down.

What I’ve checked so far:

•ls /sys/class/backlight/ returns a single interface: radeon_bl0.
•/var/lib/systemd/backlight/ does not exist, so it looks like systemd-backlight has never saved a value on my machine.
•I disabled automatic brightness in GNOME settings, and also the related options under Power (dim screen, etc.). It makes no difference: brightness is always at maximum after boot.

My questions:

  1. Is the right fix to install brightnessctl and run a startup script (e.g. a GNOME autostart entry running brightnessctl set 70% after a short delay)? Or is there a cleaner way to make systemd-backlight save and restore the value properly?
  2. Is this a known issue with radeon on this hardware or with Fedora/GNOME? If so, is there a kernel parameter or a udev rule that would fix it?
  3. Is there anything else I should check (service status, journal logs, GNOME settings daemon) to find out why the value isn’t being saved or restored?

Thank you in advance, Juan

Support Fedora and a Noob

Hi,

Today i installed Fedora in my Lenovo Legion Notebook. First Not so good Thing, the Default Installation "use full Disk" will not create a Swap partition. Why IS this not default for mobil devices with hibernate often in use?

OK, created, installed Updates, some Programms installed. After a reboot it goes into Emergency Mode. But it cannot Open Access to console because root IS locked.

How to fix this now? Reinstall?

Support Lag upon wake (7.2.11-200) and large battery discharge (5% over 8hrs) in Lunar Lake laptop (Asus P5404CSA).

After updating (not sure what the kernel version I was using before) to kernel 7.2.11-200, I started to notice lag after waking from sleep and large battery discharge (5% over 8hrs). This did not happened before in this laptop (Lunar Lake, 258V). I am using Fedora silverblue 44, is there a way I can downgrade the linux kernel?

Solved it now:

Get the history with

sudo ostree pull --commit-metadata-only --depth=-1 fedora:fedora/44/x86_64/silverblue ostree log fedora:fedora/44/x86_64/silverblue

Choose the commit and compare it with the latest one (get it using rpm-ostree status) using:

rpm-ostree db diff <latest commit> <old suspected commit that upgraded to latest kernel>

Then deploy

sudo rpm-ostree deploy <version>

For this one, the version is

sudo rpm-ostree deploy 44.20261016.0

Thanks to @ak*dev in discord

Support I couldn't start GUI (Window Manager) from kmscon

I trying f45, but kmscon is running on /dev/dri/card0, and whenever I try to start GUI after logging in via the CLI, it fails.

However, if I login from a Display manager like sddm, I can log in via the GUI.

I stopped kmscon service using systemctl, I could no longer enter commands (though I had expected that).

Other peaple don't start GUI from CLI (kmscon)?

Discussion Fedora upgrade guide vanished from Google search

Post image
87 Upvotes

My go to was to just google fedora distro upgrade and then follow the first link to that wonderful article on https://docs.fedoraproject.org/.

Unfortunately for me, and my assumption is for some others maybe, the first hit on google now points to an older tutorial.

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Upgrading_Fedora_using_package_manager

Ofcourse there is a hint on that page to go here instead:

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-new-release/

But it took me like 5 more tries to get there and notice the banner. I am stating this, because if this happens to me, there could be others that it could be happening to. I want the Fedora 45 upgrade to go smooth and figured this is relevant.

How can this be improved? Or where do I go, to improve this?

PS

I made the headline a bit melodramatic, I am sorry, I felt it necessary.

Support DisplayLink/EVDI Installer Standalone Python TUI

Thumbnail
4 Upvotes

https://github.com/thompsonseanr/DisplayLink-EVDI-Install-Script/releases/tag/v1.1.3

Due to an issue encountered with an older, incompatible version of EVDI and the latest Linux 7.X.X kernel, this python TUI was written to decouple the version of the EVDI module bundled with the Synaptics DisplayLink Driver and Manager installer and give users the option to choose the version of EVDI from the DisplayLink EVDI Git Repo that works for their kernel version.

Tested in:

Void
Fedora 44
Arch
openSUSE Tumbleweed
