Updated Wiki for r/cyanotypes

Hello All!

I've started updating the WIKI for /r/cyanotypes.

So far I've expanded our "Getting Started" to include external web links for

Community Resources Wiki Page

I've really enjoyed scrolling through past posts and comments to tease out links for the Community Resources Wiki Page. This will be a living/breathing section of the wiki, featuring posts and comments that dive a little deeper into the cyanotype process by your community members. This can help provide inspiration or answers that other users may find helpful.

Thank you for stopping by.

Feel free to leave a comment down below if there's something you'd like to see added to the wiki, or any feedback you may have.

All the best.

-Bloo

Achieving transparecy with botanicals?

I can't figure out how to get any level of transparency with flowers or leaves. This test was done with a UV lamp 8" away from the paper (watercolor), which is covered with glass from a picture frame. Even at 20 minutes there was no detail from the hydrangea petals.

Am I missing something important here?

Cyanotype on clothes

I want to make my gf a shirt with cyanotype patterns on it. I've done a cyanotype 1 time in a photography class but I don't remember what the solutions I used were and also I wasn't sure if the process was different for fabric. Does anybody have any experience in this that could point me in the right direction?

Any advice for large scale cyanotype?

Heya, new to this sub - I'm currently in the process of creating a large scale cyanotype (22x56 inches) and wanted to just get advice from anyone who has worked to this scale.

What I currently have:
- Paper, 300gsm cold press Arches watercolour paper (I cannot use hot press as I am painting on top after the cyanotype)
- 1DFAUL cyanotype solution kit
- Dark room for paper prep and drying

I'm currently looking for an affordable UV light (UK based so the weather this time of year is not cyanotype friendly!) and am looking at 2mm thick acrylic glass.

With rinsing, I'm guessing I'll need to use a bath?

Any thoughts or advice would be really appreciated 🙏

super exposure with a table I made.

so I made myself an exposure table using a Lack.

https://www.alternativephotography.com/diy-uv-light-boxes-alternative-photography/

tested it out last night at what I felt was a conservative 5 minutes. lol. nope, okay I guess.i need to sacrifice a transparency to make an exposure grid.

my plan is to make some tshirts with solar fast, which I still need to test. however I have a bunch of cyanotype papers I prepped a while ago.

I also need to move the lack under my sewing drafting table as it is in the kids' play space right now (unplugged!)

My brain on flowers

I’ve been experimenting recently with using cyanotype on my medical images. This piece is an MRI of my brain digitally superimposed on a flower, with free motion machine embroidery and trapunto quilting to create depth.

A quite difficult photograph for this process, as the dark areas appear somehow brighter than blues. I'm working on the black layer currently, so I'm going to present it a bit later. Anyway, I like the print even now, so I'm glad to share it with you, guys!

I’ve just been trying things for a week, so very new. I’ve used fresh flora and negatives printed on transparencies so far. I’m using hot press watercolor paper.

The second print also has some red wine I added to the paper after the chemicals dried, before I exposed it. (I dried the paper again post-red wine.)

Cyanotype Animation on Waste Denim

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

2.1k Upvotes

Sharing a recent animation I did on waste denim for the musician Girl in Red's recent track Blue. I basically got loads of cut offs of denim and used trousers from thrift stores, then had to cut them into pieces large and flat enough for the contact sheets.

Because of the stitching, I'd often have to trim it down so the contact sheet would lay flat on the negative, which even after doing still resulted in some loss of detail. In addition, the denim took up so much emulsion, even using a spray coating method. Roughly 10-20ml of denim per a4 print (12 frames = 1 second of animation). And then drying the pieces took forever before printing and hoping for the best! But still glad the way it turned out.

My insta is @_eddcarr_ if you are interested in seeing some BTS!
