WITH trading, mailing, grouping, chatting (and such) restrictions of course. (EDIT for people who can't read more than a reddit title). So people can TRY the game, see if they LIKE it and want more of it for the real experience.
Vanilla+TBC OG here, I think we can all decently agree that Vanilla WoW content was very probably a fairly profitable investment for Blizzard back from 2004 until today, right ?
It's been 84 years I haven't been involved in WoW content and forums etc.. so it's probably something people have been talking about for a while already, cool!
I think Free to Play Vanilla content would be a great free introducing motivation factor for newcomers and refraining returner dads and moms. Classic and Forever have plenty of content people will enjoy and be happy to keep enjoying once they have reached lvl 60.
Why not offering people to push their character to subbed content later on, Classic TBC+, SoD, Retail, so they can enjoy the entire catalog Blizzards now have with the character they spent time on ? (Yes, hence they accept their spells and talents to change in different versions, this is an RPG environment, we're all connected-brains players, we should be able to survive this)
I think looking at FFXIV history and reversed success compared to Retail WoW is better than words from me to elaborate on why this would not be a bad idea, if not a great one for both players and Blizzard.
This simple idea forced Square Enix to provide new GREAT content for their player base in order to retain them over the years, nobody can ignore that. Players have responded en masse and with unprecedented loyalty to the game, for more than a decade now.
Personnaly I like quality content, I like feeling that devs have thought and worked hard to stay true to the original vision that made me and millions of other people fall in love with the game.
Unlike Retail, more like Forever (congrats to this team's devs).
Anticipation note for whoever think this would be a good argument against: botters bot whatever the cost, as long as simple maths of "income vs subscription fee" is positive. This is a different topic, for a different conversation, needing different solutions!
Cheers!
EDIT / TLDR**:** Free to play with Hard Restrictions on account economy. Look at how FFXIV business model and its free accounts restrictions work in order to have an educated position on this topic. I think this is at the very least debatable that WoW could do great with something similar.
Thanks to the people that took time to read before commenting and answered nicely, I see you!
EDIT 2: For those who never tried it and say this business model would bring only bad people to WoW, the community on FFXIV is very positive and welcoming to newcomers because the game encourages that. Not in a candid and childish way, but because it's grounded to the game design around dungeons, mentor awards etc ... very cool design from the devs, definitely feels like what Forever devs are trying to bring to WoW from what they say and explain in their podcasts, I'm all in for it, bringin back life and good vibes to WoW.
EDIT 3: I'm subbed to WoW as I am to FFXIV too, have no issue with subscription business model, very happy to do so and keep paying it, that is not the point of this post.
