OpenBSD 8.0 Released

How about that release graphic?

What's something new or updated/fixed in the release that you'll immediately benefit from? VMM/VMD for me:

  • Added MP support for up to 64 VCPUs per guest VM.

Tangential but there was also a Game of Trees(GOT) release on the 14th. ( https://gameoftrees.org/releases/changes.html )

This tidbit is very welcome:

  • default to using SHA256 object IDs in newly created repositories

nux9 1.4.0: a console Linux distro with no GNU anywhere (musl, NetBSD userland, Limine)

Post image

Hey, I'm one of the author of nux9. I just put out 1.4.0, so I figured it's

time to show it to people who might actually care about this stuff.

It's a small console-only Linux distro with no GNU software in the base

system. Linux 6.18 LTS, musl libc, NetBSD's userland instead of

coreutils or busybox, Limine for booting (BIOS and UEFI), runit for

init, mdevd for device management, doas instead of sudo, OpenSSH, and

tcc as the compiler. Packages are handled by xpkg, and there's an

installer called xsetup. The whole ISO is about 285 MB and boots to a

plain console.

The idea was to see how far you can get with a base that has no GNU

parts at all and is small enough that one person can read through it.

The NetBSD tools turned out to be a good fit for that: the code is

clean and the tools behave predictably, though some scripts and

software written for GNU assumptions need a bit of care.

It's still rough in places and x86_64 only for now. If you want to try

it, the ISO and checksum are on the release page and the docs are on

the site.

Project: https://gitlab.com/nux9/

I'd like to hear from people who use NetBSD tools daily: is there

anything obvious We are getting wrong on the userland side? And what would

you want from a distro like this before you'd bother installing it?

x11appjail v2.0.0: Testing D-Bus proxy and linux-brave

Thumbnail youtube.com
8 Upvotes

D-Bus is a powerful daemon that enables applications to communicate seamlessly within our environment. As a very powerful daemon, it can pose a security risk if not used correctly. Much like Firejail and Flatpak, x11appjail now uses xdg-dbus-proxy to filter D-Bus communication between the jail and the host system.

In this video, I use linux-brave to demonstrate how notifications appear on the host system, how to use playerctl to control the linux-brave player via MPRIS, and how the theme of my desktop environment (in this case, a dark theme) is honored. We will also look at what happens when the bus session is not started.

Which BSD version would you suggest for a begginer user who is moving from "windows like" desktop?

Hello everyone, i am currently using linux system, but with the latest discovery of the fact that kernel is being maintained with ai, and even encourages it, makes me quite worried for my computer's ability to function in near future. I have moved from windows to linux, but now I want to see how bsd works, and learn how to use it before worse things happen. Which bsd version would you suggest?

for the question for what i use my machine: steam and gog games, emails and browsing the web, blender and krita. my gpu is amd. I have heard that bsd has very good documentation so it should be easy to figure most base things out?

Is gayming on freebsd comparable to gayming on linux?

As the linux situation with ai gets worse, I wanna switch to something else. Howwever my concern is that bsd is pretty niche. Does steam support bsd? How does wine work? And what about wayland?

Part II: Is It a Flatpak? Is It an AppImage? No! It's AppJail!

Thumbnail youtu.be

Numerous improvements have been made to x11appjail between version v1.0.0 and v1.3.1:

  • Performance improvements in both x11appjail(1) and appscript-verify(1).
  • Shallow builds to decouple the image from the AppJail.
  • BLAKE3 support for faster file hash calculation.
  • True hardware acceleration via VirtualGL.
  • A new command, transfer, for securely transferring files between the host and a jail, or between jails.
  • Many more examples added: Brave (Linux), Telegram Desktop, Thunderbird, Chromium, BadWolf, Evince, Feh, and Mpv. Evince, Feh, and Mpv are particularly interesting, as they demonstrate how AppJails can utilize existing files on the host, processing them within a FreeBSD jail transparently to the user.
  • su-exec has been replaced by mdo(1).
  • And much more.

This video demonstrates some of the aforementioned features.
