Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

First car for 16yo daughter

So the time has come for our daughters first car.

We have $11k total saved for this purchase and absolutely refuse to go into debt for anything.

I know the answer will be get a Honda/Toyota, but here in Alabama, finding one of these that doesnt either have 200k miles or isnt completely roached out, hasnt proven possible yet.

Thoughts on something safe and reliable? She wants cute, but she will get what we give her!

I said lets get her an older accord and a $5k gas card, but i got the look from the wife about that one.(THIS WAS A JOKE BY THE WAY!).....she wants something with more modern safety features, but i dont think that is realistic with the budget we have.

I put word out through my car buddies and if my wife and daughter were into some classics I would have GREAT options for her (68 NOVA, 2004 T-Bird, 70 Gran Torino GT, etc...) but alas, they have no taste (just kidding)

I can’t pick a car I need advice pretty please

Hey y’all! So, I’m trying to decide what vehicle to get, and I honestly can’t make up my mind. I’ve had an ’87 Cadillac for three years, but someone hit it, and now I’m looking at two different vehicles. The Cadillac has air ride, but the rear windows don’t roll down, and it has no radio or AC. They’re asking $8,000 for it. The Corvette is $7,500, and it also has no radio or AC. Both vehicles look like they’ve been taken really good care of, so I’m having a hard time choosing between them. The Cadillac has been my dream car for years, but for some reason, I can picture myself hopping out of the Corvette more. I genuinely don’t know which one I want, and I could really use some outside opinions to help me decide. If you were in my position, which one would you choose and why?

Buying my first car

Hello, could anyone help me decide if this would be a good first car? My budget is around $10k. I'm looking around FB marketplace for a Honda civic and found this post. The seller has told me the vehicle has been in a minor accident on the front left, and I plan on getting a carfax if there are no "red flags". Thank you.

Which car would you daily?

• Upvotes

Considering a couple options. Socal (no rain, no snow), want a fun daily but honestly unsure which I'd like best; those that have owned one of these cars, please LMK

All stick shift

1st/2nd gen BRZ, Elantra N, GTI, Veloster N performance, Mazda3.

Ideally 22+MPG, so no Mustang. I've only owned FWD so I'm not sure if they'd be fun unless driven on the limit (tell me if I'm wrong), which is why I'm leaning towards the BRZ most right now.

I couldn't tell you what my main priorities and willingness to compromise is. I've only driven an old camry, so my main desire is for a fun manual transmission. But once I've owned that car for a couple months, maybe I'll miss the comfort and economy of a camry. Help me decide! Will I regret getting a pure RWD sports car?

Should I Buy a Hybrid or an EV

Hello everyone. As I’ve seen, this question has been asked a lot in this thread but I wanted some possible advice on my personal situation.

I’m currently driving a Mazda CX-5 2018 and while I love the car, it’s kind of brutal in terms of up keep since I pull permits around the city of LA for my job and drive on average 300+ miles a week.

I live in a rental home and there is no EV charger installed nor do I have one at work (there are some at some of the cities I go to).

An SUV or minivan is definitely a must since u also need a way to lug my drum set around too.

Any direction here would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hybrids for die hard combustion engine guys?

Buying another household car now that we have young adults working and no public transportation options. We are Buy 'em used and drive 'em till they die folks.

Husband is dead set on a gasoline engine vehicle, but young adults are pushing for a hybrid. I get it that we don't have to consider their concerns, but Im wondering if there is an option that might serve as a compromise.

Hubs wants to purchase a Subaru Crosstrek. He misses the light agility of his 2012 Countryman and I think he's looking at that car as a worthy successor to that car. (BTW that mini is still on the road and nearing 300k on the odometer...one of the kids is driving it.)

Any suggestions for us?

Is this worth it?

Found this 2012 Honda fit for $4500 wanted to offer 4k. Went to look at it today and saw some rust that looked like it could possibly be structural (pic 2/3), and what looks like maybe some sort of undercoat? (Pic 4/5) The whole bottom is covered in it.

Also, needs two new tires.

Paint isn’t pretty but interior is super clean and it has the 5 speed. Only 115k miles, should I bite? Wanted to offer 4000 and see what they say.

84 month+ car loans are helping keep car prices ridiculously high, and nobody seems to talk about it

I've been thinking about why car prices are still so ridiculously high, and I think longer financing terms are a big part of the problem.

According to Experian, over 35% of new-car loans in Q1 2026 were longer than 6 years. Edmunds just reported that 25.5% of financed new cars in Q3 2026 had loans of 7 years or longer. That's literally one out of every four people financing a new car for at least 84 months.

Think about how insane that is.

The average amount financed on a new car is now $44,664, and the average monthly payment is $787. Over 21% of new-car buyers are even signing up for payments of $1,000 or more.

My question is, why would manufacturers ever feel pressured to lower prices when financing companies can just keep stretching out the loans?

If people can't afford a $50,000 car over 5 years, instead of lowering the price, they just offer 6 or 7 years. Suddenly the monthly payment looks more manageable, even though the car is just as expensive and you're paying even more in interest.

We've basically gone from asking "How much does this car cost?" to "How much can I afford per month?"

And I think manufacturers have figured that out.

I'm not saying longer loans are the only reason car prices are high. Obviously inflation, manufacturing costs, and other factors play a role. But longer loans make it easier for manufacturers to maintain higher prices because buyers can keep stretching their payments.

At what point does this stop? Are we eventually going to normalize 96-month or even 120-month loans just so people can afford ordinary vehicles?

I genuinely wonder what would happen to new-car prices if the maximum financing term was 60 months.

Wouldn't manufacturers eventually have to start making cars people could actually afford again?

I have better results on Car Max for financing. They have a bunch of the same cars so here is the list and you guys let me know what my best option would be. I also prefer to not have a car and more suv size, but i will settle if it is reliable

Ford - Fiesta, focus, ecosport, escape

Kia - Soul, forte, sportage

Hyundai - sante fe, accent

Jeep - compass, renegade

Nissan- Altima, Sentra

2026 Acura MDX or something else?

• Upvotes

Hi Everyone

I have driven Acura RDX in the past but now I need something with a little more trunk room. I was looking at the MDX cause I have experienced the RDXalready, but it has the same issues that the RDX had. Pretty crappy gas mileage.

The issue is, I want it to have the pick up that the RDX had, but I am not sure I can get decent gas millage, with luxury interior, that doesn't eat gas

Is the 2026 MDX a good option, or does anyone recommend something different? For around the same price. I just like that Acura gives you basically all the good features without having to add 100 add ons

Sedan is not an option for a family sadly. 1 child

Mazda maybe? I really like the genesis but that is pretty high in price

Buying my first car! Which of these looks like the best bang for my buck?

Can’t decide on a larger suv

• Upvotes

Stuck between a few SUVs, have to go look at them but want to bring my list down to 2.

Currently drive a Honda crv & have 1 kid, but we are so squeezed in it already and plan to have 1 more kid. We also do a lot of road trips including to the snow for the upcoming season but otherwise living in dry summer/rainy winter part of CA.

I’ve narrowed down to
VW Atlas 3-4 year old max, or new
Honda Pilot 3-4 year old
Hyundai Palisade (26/27)
Kia Telluride (26/27)

Any advice, opinions welcome, please help me pick!

26’ Mazda CX30 vs 2026 Toyota Corolla

• Upvotes

I’m leasing. Mazda js 459/month (0 down) & Toyota Corolla 338/month (0 down). Im weighing the pros and cons. I am using it mainly for commuting for work about 3 days to work or different locations & to go out here & there. Corolla is cheaper but I am worried about insurance pricing. I like the style of Mazda but I’d love to hear opinions. Is this price worth it? It’s a steep price without even thinking out insurance pricing yet. Any insight on things to watch out for with both cars but specifically Mazda?

Testla Vs Honda Hybrid

I am looking to buy a new car. I am struggling to make a decision between a Tesla 3 2026 or Honda Hybrid Civic 2026 (I’m not worry about the monthly payment). I really like the Tesla how it looks, all that technology but I am hearing the insurance is very expensive and the tires. I have to plan ahead when it comes to charging. The Honda hybrid will give me a lot of miles and it will be more of a long-term. Please help

Thinking of getting a 2010 mazda 3 for a budget car?

• Upvotes

I lost my car recently and had been using my ebike for the last 2 months to get into work . I wanted to save up to 4k but this weather has been colder than I thought, honestly riding the bike to go get groceries or work has gotten somewhat difficult. I originally was gonna push to December to save up to 4k but only got 2k . But damn this cold is getting to me and just gotten runny nose from it . I do cover myself up but it’s been hard since I have to go everywhere on bike or walk . Recently my friend just showed this autoshop that sells cheaper cars under 10k . Looked into and saw a 2010 mazda 3 that’s automatic. It has close to 140,000 miles and was going on for $4,995 . It’s one of the choices I’ve been looking for a budget car and the closet one I have to where I’m at . I wanna know if it’s a good reliable car or what I should look or ask for before making a move on it . I budget around 6k and under . I know that’s a hard sell but I I’m hoping I can find something. I’ve also been looking into 2000s Toyota or Honda care since I’ve heard there very reliable and found some though somewhat far . I’m still searching but this mazda did catch my eyes and it’s a walkable distance from me . What yall think ? I’m not much of a car expert besides the basics like changing oil, changing a tire , or changing breaks .

2020 GMC Acadia vs 2013 Honda Pilot ??? Need an expert

• Upvotes

Here are the specs I’m considering: need expert opinions. For context, my previous dealership vehicle was a huge mistake so I really want to make a smart decision this go around.

2020 GMC Acadia SLE - rebuilt title (rear driver door damaged, otherwise great condition)
60k miles
$13,500

2015 Honda Pilot - (looking at two local options, one at 86k miles, other at 107k miles)
$15,000 (+/-)

Here’s my crossroads… the Acadia is at a smaller mechanic shop that is reputable. Our family has bought from him for 15+ years with great luck and service. Also willing to help bring some of the price down and give me a decent offer on my junked car that is the one being replaced. But this is really the only option that’s fitting my needs at the moment.

The Pilots, a little more pricey (because of its reliability) but I’m assuming would hoping last well into 200k miles if kept well maintained.

I don’t know much about GMC, but Honda and Toyota I feel like will always win with their reliability and longevity. I’m trying not to finance if I don’t have to. But I could afford a car payment if I didn’t have another option - especially something around $15k. I just know I could get less for a newer car but I’m worried it may not hold up to a tried and true make/model. I don’t want to get the newer vehicle just because it’s newer and has more features. I’m willing to go older if it means I’m going to have it last longer!

Thoughts/opinions/advice!?!
