ARTICLE 5 Offseason Questions for the Toronto Tempo
A snippet from our most recent article on tempo.basketball:
While the world rightfully watches the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries battle it out for WNBA supremacy, it is hard not to think about our Toronto Tempo and what it will take them to get to this stage one day.
After a rollercoaster season that started with promise and ended with injuries and disappointment, the Tempo have a golden opportunity to take steps in the right direction this offseason.
Here are five questions that they need to address:
- Who can end our frontcourt woes? All season long, it was abundantly clear that the Tempo have a glaring need for an improved front court but finding help this offseason might be easier said than done. There are some free agents worth targeting though.
- Can we come up with a more successful offensive game plan? While we don't need to pile on about how our offense went sideways in the latter part of the season thanks to injuries, we do have to admit that the Tempo struggled scoring inside the paint all season long. Interestingly, advanced stats shows that the Tempo TRIED to score inside the paint but just weren't very good at it. We wonder if the team needs to revisit our offensive game plan or double down with a healthier squad.
- Should the Tempo revisit their mix of veterans vs young players? Last season, the Tempo ranked 5th in the league in average age of players. Going into this offseason, a lot of our older players will be free agents. It will be interesting to see if the team rebalance the age of their team with more youth.
- Can we develop a defensive identity? As we have seen in this year’s playoffs, the two best defensive teams made it to the finals with similar styles of being very physical, energetic, aggressive, and disruptive on the defensive end. Meanwhile, the Tempo ended the season as the worst defensive team in the WNBA. Addressing this area will be crucial for the Tempo.
- Who is a starter and who isn’t? The Toronto Tempo currently share the best odds to select the top pick in the upcoming 2027 rookie draft. This is very exciting and the player they pick can potentially be franchise-changing. The draft is also unfortunately guard and wing-heavy and could cause a logjam in the starting lineup next season. Between Brittney Sykes, Chef Marina Mabrey, WNBA all-rookie Kiki Rice, and the top 2027 pick, who comes off the bench next season?

Do I see any of our players playing in Unrivaled to prepare for next season? I do because it is basically like the equivalent of a Summer League in a sense if you think about it but also helps our girls prepare too for training camp for the 2027 season

DISCUSSION If we miss out on Juju by not winning the Lottery
Then the only 2 players that I would want here in Toronto as Tempo players would be Madison Booker and Hannah Hidalgo
Hannah if drafted to Toronto, easily have her as your point guard for the future and Kiki Rice you have her move to shooting guard. Or vice versa Kiki stays at point and Hannah moves to shooting guard. Either way you get a backcourt duo for the next few years here in Toronto especially if we draft Hannah.
Madison Booker...with her she is a combo forward so she can play small or power forward depending on how you wanna use her.
However, the goal is Juju Watkins. If we win the Lottery, then we get a superstar right from day 1.

Where to watch the WNBA finals in Toronto?
TSN is showing all of the games. The dates are October 17, 19, 21, and 24 (and 26, 29, and 31 if need be).
Has anyone seen any watch parties pop up?

Would a Tempo Championship parade rival that of the Raptors if we ever win a WNBA title someday? I mean given how on fire the city was when the Raptors made the Finals or even won the chip; would the city be on fire again if our women were to do it? Of course it would

Tempo merch at Winners
Has anyone found Tempo merch at Winners or Marshalls? I saw a couple of people post some at the beginning of the season, but I had no luck finding anything. I'm wondering if we'll start to see more now that the season is over. I'd appreciate it if you could share locations if you have found some!

Tempo players recount defining moments of inaugural season
by Sarah Maat
“I remember this game like it happened yesterday,” Laura Juskaite said during her exit interview.
The Lithuanian rookie had just been asked about the most defining moments of the Toronto Tempo’s inaugural season, and as she thought about Marina Mabrey’s 53-point game she broke into a beaming smile.
“She was doing incredible things,” Juskaite recounted.
The record-tying performance inside of Toronto’s rickety Coca-Cola Coliseum was an undeniable highlight of the first season. It was certainly a career highlight for the star shooting guard who had previously been overlooked, but it meant more than that to the fresh Tempo roster. It was emblematic of the success possible even on a WNBA team north of the border — it helped put Toronto on the women’s basketball map. Although injuries bit into the overall success the expansion franchise found, that moment of greatness still carries weight.
“We could not believe what we were watching,” Isabelle Harrison told the IX Sports when she, too, brought up the 125-point win over the Sparks as a defining moment.
According to the eight-year veteran, planning for the big night on June 25 began three days earlier in Atlanta. Harrison remembers sitting on the bench during that game and watching her squad struggle against the Dream. There, they began plotting how to turn things around.
When they returned to Toronto, change started to happen. Harrison explains how it felt seeing Mabrey knock down nine threes and watching Julie Allemand rack up a career-high 14 assists as the two got the score moving.
“It just felt like oh yeah we’re taking off, and it was such great momentum.”
Of course, Mabrey agreed, “I think the 53 tops everything. That was one of the best nights of my basketball career.”
The Tempo’s inaugural season was littered with record moments of greatness and first-time accolades, but is more easily defined by the injuries that racked up and derailed Sandy Brondello’s optimistic plans for year one.
“[Our team was defined by] going through adversity and still showing up every day,” Julie Allemand said. “No matter what happened, like the injuries. Every time we had someone else, so like it was crazy. Like when you think about it, like when you take some time to think about it, it’s insane.”
