Hated Tropes Things meant to be progressive just end up being incredibly offensive

What If - In one of the comics Miles becomes Thor, and it's full of stereotypes about black people such as the Mjolnir having graffiti on it and the infamous "by Odin's fade"

Emilia Perez - Everything about the movie

I'd argue even more important than Mulan's bravery and hard work was the fact she succeeds by being who she is. By bringing her own personality, skills, and perspective, she is able to figure out solutions to problems that others struggle with. Its a great message not only about how being yourself can help you to meet challenges, but also paints the conservative system that rejects being yourself as foolish and destined for failure.

Or you could just give her super powers.

I gotta a theory that’s exactly why they gave her superpowers.

If you look at all the live action remakes, none of the main characters resolve their stories any more. A character with wealth or power unobtainable to the masses does.

Cinderella? Gives up and resigns herself to lifelong servitude. The prince rescues her.

Aladdin is now too dumb to trick Jafar, the Genie does it for him.

Belle cannot break the spell on the castle, everyone dies. The witch fixes everything.

But hard work was the original message of Mulan, so they were stuck. How do you make the success of hard work unobtainable? Make it magic instead. Problem solved. Now the children won’t get ideas.

Man… I never bothered to watch any of the live action remakes, I had no idea they changed things so much! That’s such a bummer, and super unnecessary.

And they’re never changes for the better. I definitely didn’t need the plot to change from the Beast giving Belle the castle library because he knew she’d love it, to him showing Belle his library and telling her to get better book taste because she’s not well read enough.

Negging really makes me root for those crazy kids…

Cinderella didn’t give up. Her kindness got the mice to help her and she sang to get the prince’s attention.

So a quick compare and contrast -

In the 1950s, Cinderella befriended and trained the mice. When she realised she was trapped she called for help and directed her mice friends with how to aid her (Let me out! Get Bruno!). She used her allies to gain the key, ran downstairs and announced herself, and won her freedom by producing the glass slipper.

In the new film she’s denied the opportunity for her own agency by the stepmother breaking the slipper, and she resigns herself to lifelong servitude, trapped by her situation. She sings at the window to comfort herself, not to gain help or try to free herself. She doesn’t open the window herself. She doesn’t try to attract the Prince’s attention. The mice open the window without her asking, and the Prince overhears her by chance.

Due to the plot, only the Prince could then intervene in this situation. He rescues Cinderella, using his unobtainable and unassailable position to override all obstacles.

Look at the differences between what Cinderella does and is allowed by the narrative to do in the first film, and what she doesn’t or can’t do in the second. It’s a stark change. She’s so passive in the 2015 film. Kind of goes against her whole mantra really - she’s not being courageous and she’s never kind to herself.

The end of your comment makes it seem like you are mixing up the concepts of intent and the effect things have.

Why do you think it’s a mix up, rather than me deliberately implying a malicious intent to a remarkably consistent pattern in Disneys modern children’s media?

Thought I was being fairly clear about it to be honest.

I don't think it's a mix-up, I was politely saying that I think you're not seeing this with nuance and you're being overly emotional and reducing the intellectual complexity of the situation by trying to portray everything as one singular potential intention instead of the fact that thousands of people have decision-making capabilities that influence large projects like these and there are going to be at the very least two reasons lol.

Do you think every single person there working on the project of Mulan had the intention of stifling all concepts of future children being able to think about outside possibilities or something?

Or do you think that regardless of intent that's a likely possibility and a likely outcome regardless of the potentially thousands or hundreds of thousands of different reasons that the thousands of different people working on that project had for doing so?

I know that you were implying that there's some big cabal like in a Stanley Kubrick room that all meets together and has these simple little evil plots, that's what I'm calling childish and think is silly that you're doing and that's why I'm calling you out on it.

Yeah, but, I don’t care if you don’t agree though.

You do care you wouldn't have replied though.

Also I'm not saying I disagree with you because you haven't answered the question on your reasoning for me to understand your point to even know if I disagree or agree with it.

Which do you think is more likely out of those possibilities I laid out? Do you think one singular reason over tens of thousands of people, or do you think regardless of reasons that the same result can be had?

Here's another one, if a rock slide starts from a boulder falling down a mountain, assuming the velocity is the same does it matter whether it was the wind or person that pushed that? For legal liability it might matter and the intention will impact that, but the reality of how quick the boulder accelerated due to gravity didn't change based on there being a reason or not.

What you described is a likely possible result even if they had the opposite intention so I want you to explain your reasoning of why you think on top of that being a likely outcome that it was also a concerted effort.

You think the elites dont talk with each other? They are a class. They have their own interests.

We ca go vote and demonstrate to get our interests.

The top elites cant do that. The class is not large enough to get anything with votes.

So they just give up? They have unending wealth, influence, power, information, connection, status, relationships, ... they just give up to fight for their own interests. After all they cant get enough votes. They achieved everything, they reached the planetary top, they just give up this one time.

I would add that the OG Disney Mulan wasn't "Girl" enough to find a husband. But also wasn't "Man" enough to fight. But in the end what she was, was enough to defeat the huns

She got down to business.
