Hated Tropes Things meant to be progressive just end up being incredibly offensive

What If - In one of the comics Miles becomes Thor, and it's full of stereotypes about black people such as the Mjolnir having graffiti on it and the infamous "by Odin's fade"

Emilia Perez - Everything about the movie

We can't forget Black Thor's Asgard

276

u/TX_domin 12h ago

The sneakers from the power lines just upsets me every time I see this image

68

u/AngryGazpacho 12h ago

Fine weed to buy in Asgard yo

25

u/Taweret 10h ago

I'm cringing so hard

3

u/Witty_Ad_898 4h ago

How many people are getting jumped in Asgard?

2

u/ostapenkoed2007 3h ago

why? is it a stereotype? because we had them here too

1

u/Bossmenjak 4m ago

It's something associated with poor neighborhoods, which then gets extrapolated as a "black culture" thing sometimes. There's no reason at all for Asgard to have shoes from the powerlines, it shouldn't even have powerlines.

230

u/mercuriokazooie 12h ago

I like how they want the rhymes to sound like it's hip hop but it just comes across as Dr Seuss

37

u/solrua 10h ago

I'm trying to read it to some sort of beat but it just keeps falling into rhyming for children territory. There's no rhythm to it. Also, gotta love them rhyming Loki with Low Key.

4

u/MrBurnerHotDog 3h ago

Like in that American Gods book how the whole thing is presented as Gods being real on Earth and one of the first characters our protagonist introduces us to is his jailmate "Low-Key" Lyesmith and a twist late in the book is he is Loki all along. Like, obviously that's who he is

30

u/TotalBlissey 11h ago

Imagining the art style as Dr. Seuss instantly makes the image ten times better

20

u/copperpin 11h ago

You can add a beat to most dr Seuss and make it sound hip hop

10

u/humdrumturducken 11h ago

Well now I want Marvel to do a crossover. "The Cat with the Hammer" could work. Or maybe "Yertle the God of Thunder"

6

u/AcrolloPeed 9h ago

Mothafuckin’ ACCURATE

3

u/Arria_Galtheos 7h ago

You just inspired me to invent a joke.

What's the difference between Dr. Seuss and Dr. Dre?A beat.

1

u/North-Water-1951 4h ago

This could mean atleast 2 different things if you think about it

1

u/SamanthaJaneyCake 4h ago

Why The God of Thunder Stole Odin’s Fade.

1

u/Starman926 3h ago

Dr. Seuss would’ve done much better with the syllables

561

u/RX-HER0 12h ago edited 12h ago

So a black person becomes Thor and suddenly Asgard is a ghetto lmao. You couldn't be more racist if you tried.

141

u/Smart_Freedom_8155 11h ago

Remember that guy that said "before I went to watch Black Panther, I joked with a guy that the movie would start with some Black kids playing basketball and rap music in the background"?

Marvel can't help itself sometimes.

3

u/icantbeatyourbike 1h ago

Wasn’t or written and directed by Coogler?

2

u/Kgb725 1h ago

Coogler a black man directed it and is from Oakland

198

u/Wardock8 12h ago

I think I'd actually rather be called the n word lmao

94

u/MineNowBotBoy 11h ago

Pretty sure that’s what the frost giants call him

12

u/DengarLives66 5h ago

Why are the frost giants all of a sudden wearing white hoods?

7

u/LoopStricken 7h ago

A common misconception, they actually say Nifflers.

2

u/xSegador 3h ago

Frost white* giants

38

u/Capable-Locksmith-13 10h ago

I'm not even black and this shit offends me.

Jesus Christ, did they run this by a single black person before printing it?

14

u/cheeseburgerandfrie 9h ago

Definitely not

10

u/Alarming_Panic665 7h ago

See this is why DEI is important. Because if a single black person was on the editorial (with actual power/authority) then this wouldn't have happened.

1

u/KeyMyBike 2h ago

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a black person onboard that disagreed and as a result, the artists and writers made it more offensive in retaliation.

3

u/SelfInteresting7259 7h ago

Not even a chance

2

u/interwebz_2021 7h ago

No Black people, but they did run it by the same person who approved that Converse accidental KKK ad.

3

u/David_the_Wanderer 4h ago

The what ad?

1

u/Creloc 3h ago

I think you need to go even broader. It appears they didn't run it past a single person who hadn't suffered a major head trauma in the previous three days

1

u/SuckmyPelosB1tch 3h ago

Honestly you got a point, at least that’s up front and not whatever the fuck this is

6

u/heatobooty 10h ago

Wait this wasn’t from some Boondocks episode ?

-7

u/WolfgangAddams 8h ago

I'm more offended by you calling the Asgard in that picture a "ghetto" than I am by the depiction itself.

20

u/RX-HER0 8h ago

The comic itself literally describes Asgard as "the hood".

-5

u/WolfgangAddams 8h ago

Yes. The hood. The neighborhood. Not the same as a ghetto.

6

u/North-Water-1951 4h ago

3

u/MrBurnerHotDog 3h ago

Someone called Wolfgang Addams trying to "Ummm acshually..." blatant racism is just Reddit in a nutshell. Beautiful

1

u/Hawkatana0 1h ago

You genuinely can't be this dumb.

198

u/AmyHuntingt 12h ago

My fuck that's actually offensive

72

u/Josev2002 12h ago

Asgard is his hood

25

u/thefallenfew 12h ago

Lol there is no way this issue was written by a Black person, or someone who’s ever actually met one hahah

12

u/LetsThrow69 11h ago

I seem to recall the author being Hispanic.

9

u/OsitoPandito 9h ago

Mexican American-Jew born and raised in texas... lol a pretty diverse background but still he fucked up

1

u/ventriclez 4h ago

Hispanix

10

u/FirstDukeofAnkh 11h ago

Yeah, my first thought was that the line about the fade was ignorant but not specifically racist. Then I saw Asgard. Which then made the line about Odin even worse.

5

u/Delta_Builder 9h ago edited 9h ago

pretty sure odin in the comic is bald as well

59

u/SnakeyesX 12h ago

It reads like Dr. Seuss.

47

u/clytusmarginicollis 12h ago

I think it’s supposed to be read like a rap, but it actually reads like a nursery rhyme

17

u/DaaaahWhoosh 11h ago

It's the laziest homage to the concept of poetry, just two sentences that have rhyming words at the ends. No meter whatsoever. You can't rap it, you can't sing it, you can't even recite it without sounding like an idiot.

3

u/KeyMyBike 1h ago

Your last sentence has more flow than this fucking comic strip.

7

u/Buttoneer138 11h ago

It’s rap with a c.

6

u/maxedonia 11h ago

The fresh prince callout is right there at the bottom just so you know these are sick-ass rhymes.

3

u/Ramekink 10h ago

They thought they were giving Maya Angelou when they were giving Ice Spice lmfao

166

u/ThatOneWood 12h ago

What do you mean? You’re telling me that black people don’t intentionally make every community end up looking like Harlem?

4

u/Throwawayman69420666 8h ago

Not until 4:00.

-64

u/YvngVudu 12h ago

Tf are you babbling about

30

u/GranolaCola 12h ago

That Miles’ Thor’s Asgard is based on Harlem. Honestly (and I’m a white dude from Kentucky so excuse me if I’m off), I don’t really see an issue with it because it’s probably based off Miles himself being from New York (though isn’t he from Brooklyn?). But because the entire comic is questionable, it certainly doesn’t help.

38

u/A_guy_named_Caliber 12h ago

Miles is also half Puerto Rican. But a lot of the time, writers will forget about that fact.

40

u/Noobverizer 12h ago

Asgardians are depicted as multi-ethnic gods with access to incredible technology and magic. Yet when they're all black they draw graffiti on buildings and hang shoes out on power lines (or whatever they're hanging on)? They transform a land of magic to a ghetto, lmao okay. That's gotta be atleast 30% racist, and I'm speaking as a casual racist

27

u/The_last_monkey178 12h ago

Your introduction to competitive racism is this comic

8

u/Noobverizer 12h ago

Shit this comic is like a "Introduction to Racism: RAC001" university course lmao, I don't think even the Klan can be this racist

11

u/GranolaCola 12h ago

Weird thing to admit, but ok.

-2

u/SilpheedS_S 11h ago

Depends on who writes it.
If it's the color-aproved people, it's empowering, if the shades are too light, it is racist. (To the activists)

2

u/DOOMFOOL 6h ago

What was confusing you? We can try and break it down in simpler terms

80

u/testaferrum 12h ago

thats a lot of bad stereotipes, what the actual fuck i just read

79

u/CourseSpare7641 12h ago

this is like...if a racist person infiltrated marvel to write a 'progressive' marvel story in some weird attempt to make black led stories look bad

26

u/____-_______-_--_-_- 10h ago

It reads like a progressive white person who's trying very very hard to be cool but they've never met a black person in their life (but they've seen them on the TV!)

9

u/SRSgoblin 9h ago

Dude who wrote it is a Mexican national who grew up in Burbank so, yeah pretty much.

13

u/ViriditasBiologia 11h ago

This is 100% what happened?

8

u/Vritla 11h ago

Horse shoe theory and all that.

-2

u/Preeng 11h ago

5

u/der_kugelkitzler 10h ago edited 10h ago

They refer to different things

Horseshoe theory refers to how far left and far right ideologies oftentimes employ the same tactics, compare the brutal suppression of political opponents seen in both the USSR and Nazi Germany, while Fishhook theory represents how politically centrist voters are easier to radicalise towards the far right than the far left

In fairness, some could argue that the USSR was also far-right, but I'd argue that it was certainly stylised after the teachings of marx even if it didn't follow them, and they were completely idologically opposed to traditionally far right ideologies such as fascism and nazism.

Also this ignores the fact that trying to define a political ideology based on where a person with that ideology would have sat during the French National Assembly is probably not the best approach in the current era. I.e. maybe political thinking should move away from the traditional left-right spectrum based on the grounds that some ideologies are placed identically despite being completely opposing.

E.g. someone who prefers Laissez-Faire economics could be described as far right, but other far right ideologies such as nazism held a lot of state control over economies. Meanwhile government regulation in economies is typically considered to be a socialist position.

20

u/Ok-Transition7065 12h ago

Xddddddd by Odin fade won't stop been funny

9

u/alliwantedwasajetski 12h ago

Especially since Odin was bald in the book.

23

u/VinnySmallsz 12h ago

Where the fuck are the rings though?

5

u/Kazzack 12h ago

 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

17

u/SameIdea70 12h ago

Gotta love how the artist had no idea what shoes on power lines means and just thought they were cool

16

u/SenorDiamond17 12h ago

The donkd out chariot is wild.

14

u/PeteRawk 12h ago

Jesus Christ how did NO ONE stop that from happening?

12

u/gladchadstone 12h ago edited 7h ago

Many progressives genuinely think ghetto culture is only frowned upon because its seen as black and that its all relative, failing to realize people hate ghetto culture when whites do it too

10

u/Candid_Holiday1042 12h ago

I can't believe that an entire team of people from writers to artists to editors to publishers looked at this shit and were like, "ts fire, fr fr."

10

u/ExperienceSlight7605 12h ago

Was...was this supposed to be a rap? Because it reads like a children's book 😬 Also rhyming "low key" with "Loki" is so unbelievably lazy lmao

8

u/PuzzleheadedPart196 12h ago

Shoes in the line…if they only read for a second what that meant

12

u/Dookie_boy 11h ago

Why does Asgard even have power lines

5

u/WingedSword_ 10h ago

For the shoes to hang off of, obviously.

1

u/Super_Saiyan_Twink 7h ago

what does it mean, I forgot, I'm slow and I just woke up

1

u/DOOMFOOL 6h ago

Iirc it can mean gang territory or did back in the 70s, and I think it can also mean a memorial for someone that died on that street

9

u/Einar_47 11h ago

Sweet christ there's a chariot that's the back half of a Cadillac...

8

u/PenguinBoi27 11h ago

Its impressively ass

8

u/darkwai 11h ago

this is so offensive it's actually hilarious. who fucking wrote this shit

24

u/Longshot02496 12h ago

There was not a single black person on that writing team

8

u/Gaynundwarf 11h ago

Wdym? There was plenty, like this guy for example

5

u/____-_______-_--_-_- 10h ago

What do you mean, Asgard is a people?

6

u/BludStanes 12h ago

Oh Jesus that's embarrassing

6

u/scumbrick 12h ago

Even got those shoes hanging up there as cute decorations :3

5

u/randomnumbers2506 11h ago

The KKK wishes it could create media this racist

5

u/UnquestionabIe 10h ago

Jesus fucking hell it's astonishing how racist this whole thing is presented. About the only thing it's missing is Thor wielding a bottle of Colt 45 instead of Mjolnir and a plot about Loki trying to trick him into paying child support.

4

u/OnePiece_BucketList 12h ago

The shoes on the line! Oh My God!

4

u/Leofwulf 10h ago

Bro ignore asgard who the fuck greenlit that outfit oh my god

3

u/Vounrtsch 10h ago

The image is awful, sure but the text is just… appalling. How the fuck did this get approved?

4

u/Trooper-Kais495 9h ago

Calling a black person the N-word with the hard R is somehow less racist than this.

4

u/OmegaAce1 8h ago

Pretty sure this guy also just released a black panther issue with mechanical versions of villains one of them being doctor octopus call doctor Otto blacktavius

5

u/OmegaAce1 8h ago

Reference

1

u/napstablooky2 22m ago

no way that this is real

3

u/chopsuirak 10h ago

...how tf did "Black Asgard" get approved? What the fuck is this?

3

u/UrsurusFT 10h ago

Idk why but the thing that stands out as somehow the most racist touch here is them giving Miles Thor’s breastplate and giving it fucking hoodie strings bc god forbid we have a young black man not wearing a hoodie.

3

u/Capable-Locksmith-13 10h ago

How many black people stereotypes do you want in this comic?

Marvel: Yes

3

u/BlueSonjo 10h ago

This is hilarious, it's like the KKK wrote a what-if comic.

3

u/Fluffy-Froyo4549 9h ago

Every time I see this I wonder how the hell this got past multiple layers of publishing, not a single writer, artist, editor, publisher, took a look at this and said "this is fucking awful"

3

u/789tempaccount 7h ago

So So much here for all the graffiti to the rings they try to rhyme about yet He doesn't have any rings

2

u/DoorthyHumdrum 12h ago

I dont even know what to make of this, Akira Yoshida, youve lost your damn mind

3

u/UnquestionabIe 10h ago

You mean the famously white Akira Yoshiday who invented an entire fake life story in order to bypass Marvel company rules? That Akira Yoshida?

2

u/Dale_Carvello 10h ago

Oh my fuck, that goddamned rhyme scheme. Black Dynamite did it better.

You're a corn-fed fool
with a lot of muscle mass,
but it's time for Bullhorn
to get up in that aaaass!

2

u/heatobooty 10h ago

I’d understand if that was shown in the Boondocks or some shit, good lord.

2

u/AcrolloPeed 9h ago

It took me a moment to realize the text boxes are supposed to be some sort of rap. Like I’m supposed to read them as 4-bars. What the fuck.

2

u/Delta_Builder 9h ago

Honestly i'm upset at the terrible rhymes as well that they acted proud of.

They tried rhyming low key with loki

But yeah this looks awful on all fronts

2

u/Canai97 9h ago

Oh God, the rhymes. I can't with this.

2

u/Delta_Builder 9h ago

they rhymed low key with loki

2

u/OAZdevs_alt2 9h ago

This reminds me of that storyline in Community where Shirley tries to get Troy to do a Christian rap to reach the youth.

2

u/Excellent_Law6906 5h ago

That ugly-ass graffiti when it could be full Basquiat 😭

2

u/ChiefsHat 4h ago

Does anyone else hear really crappy rap music?

2

u/werewolf394_ 3h ago

"Asgard is his hood" son 😭😭😭

1

u/JudithSlayHolofernes 12h ago

shut uppppppppppppp 😩😭

1

u/Tymathee 10h ago

Oh my god

1

u/Araanim 8h ago

Call me crazy, and I have not read the comic . . . but isn't that his Asgard because he already lives in Brooklyn? So when he becomes Thor, his home becomes the new Asgard? He doesn't transform the actual realm of Asgard into a Brooklyn neighborhood . . . right?

1

u/Super_Saiyan_Twink 7h ago

I read this unironically. It's near impossible to look past the insane racism, but the plot isn't too bad. Still hate it tho

1

u/SoyDusty 7h ago

Oh goodness, can we please! We can at least give it thee ol’ college try.

1

u/Professional_Maize42 4h ago

What the fuck is this shit?

1

u/ostapenkoed2007 3h ago

those sneakers remind me school days. there were EVERYWHERE on the cables. tho now i never see them.

1

u/MrBurnerHotDog 3h ago

"I'm the rappin' god and I'm here to say, eatin' your vegetables is A-OK!"

1

u/Court_Jester13 1h ago

"Look at all those rings"

Bro has so many they're invisible

1

u/napstablooky2 30m ago

why does this whole thing have such awful rhyming...???

1

u/Megalon96310 12h ago

They made it like New Orleans or something?

3

u/Josev2002 12h ago

Brooklyn or Harlem
