Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Endings so awful they completely destroy the legacy of the media.

  1. Two and a Half Men's final episode teased Charlie Sheen's character coming back and going to harm the other characters whilst also having insults to his character and Charlie Sheen himself. It's clear the director had a grudge and the ending where his character comes up to knock then get crushed by a piano before it cuts to the director before he says "winning" before getting crushed by another piano
  2. This was an upbeat animated show about a magical teen princess. The writers desperately wanted a romantic endgame for her and her best friend, but the way they got there was essentially multiversal omnicide. To stop a villain, the main character unilaterally decides magic is the root of all evil and destroys it entirely. By doing this, she casually commits mass genocide against every purely magical being in the multiverse. It also triggers a massive apocalyptic event that violently crashes different dimensions together into a chaotic hellscape. But the show frames this horrific, mass-extinction catastrophe as a sweet, triumphant ending just because two teenagers get to hold hands in the rubble (Star Vs The Forces Of Evil)

Chuck. The last few episodes of the final season wiped away the memories of the female protagonist, removing 5 seasons worth of character development. This completely destroyed the rewatchability of the show.

And then on the IRL side, Zachary Levi turning out to be such a huge tool ruined every project he's ever been in for me

Oh yeah, for a while people hoped there would a Chuck movie to fix the crappy ending, but Zac Levi's behavior has made sure that will never happen.

Ooo what did he do? Didn't realise he was a dick

Anti-vaxx conspiracy nut and maga "libertarian". Endorsed RFK Jr for president, then Trump, in 2024.

u/Soy_ThomCat 6d ago

And somehow even worse than simply being an anti-vax MAGA wingnut, he really tainted himself by being such a whiney little bitch about it all.

He begged people to see his crap movie (Shazam 2), and then when people didn't go see it because it was garbage he went full on into some trip about how Wokeism is to blame for why his movie failed.

Which is doubly pathetic because The Rock was right there. Man bombed so hard he killed the DCEU, and did so with a character stolen from Levi's franchise. All because the Rock wanted to play Black Adam but felt Shazam was too beneath his star power, so had the studio retool the character as a Superman rival.

I get not wanting to piss off a star at the Rock's level at the time, but when that star fell, Levi could have capitalized on it with his story. Getting big-leagued by someone who wrecked an entire franchise of franchises with their arrogance would garner tons of sympathy and schaudenfreud. Instead he got bitter about the stupidest shit.

There's also the fact that Johnson have absolutely no idea what Black Adam actually is.

One of his co-actors died of cancer and he tried to blame it on the covid vaccine. Displaying literal ghoulish behaviour.

Adam Baldwin too.

I read Zachery Quinto and was heartbroken for a moment.

Miranda, you chose this over Mass Effect 3??

C'mon son ๐Ÿ˜‚

15

u/Starfleet-Time-Lord 6d ago

Ironically also on the list!

That's sad, Mass Effect 3 is probably my favorite in the trilogy. The conclusions for all your choices is very well done, the companion banter is at its highest, and the dramatic moments are friggin amazing... The ost for the reapers is also very good, love the low base in the music sounding like the reapers

The extended ending slides patched up the parts of the end I didn't like, and Citadel Dlc is the best part of the whole ending.

I mod my game now to not only delete the star kid, but also Kai Leng (Miranda or Jacob replaces him based on choices) and thus the only option left is destroy, with Shepard surviving because of all my points ๐Ÿ˜† then another mod lets the Citadel Dlc be the after party of the whole game. So fun ๐Ÿ˜Š

Didn't mass effect 3 have the same problem?

The ending was a letdown for sure, but I wouldn't say it destroyed the legacy of the IP. It wasn't a GoT-level disaster that retroactively ruined any potential enjoyment of the trilogy.

u/fatrahb 6d ago

At first it was. It wasnโ€™t until that extended doc came out that most went from considering it maybe the worst ending to a video game trilogy ever to simply a bad ending.

Surprisingly, while the original ending was almost universally panned, they managed to make an almost miraculous comeback with patches and and DLC managed to somewhat fix the ending.

Mass Effect Andromeda, on the other hand, was so outrageously broken that it's still memed to this day (My face is tired).

There's rumors of EA giving Bioware one last chance with a new Mass Effect game, but I don't think they have the writing talent to pull it off anymore.

This and Zachary Levi going off the deep end have made the show unwatchable

I always think of him like a child star. He had a breakout and everyone loved him and then he didn't know how to deal with his fame fading. Shazam isn't totally his fault but also, it sucked.

Yeah, I had just started to watch the series again for the first time since it aired, was halfway through Season 1... then I heard about him losing his goddamn mind. I stopped. I just couldn't. Seriously.

Ah Christ, every time I do a rewatch I always wonder why I can't really remember the final season, and then I get to a certain point and have a Chuck-esque memory sequence unlock and go "aaaaah yeah that's why, it's so bad I blocked it out" lol. Doesn't really affect my view of the show as I still enjoy it, I just prefer to forget the memory wipe rubbish at the end haha.

That ending to season 5 was so baffling. I hate it so much

7

u/C0RDE_ 6d ago

Oh god, I never finished it myself, I dropped off when the start of season 5 had Morgan with the powers and they seemed to be working up to a plot where Sarah caught feelings, so I hard tapped out. They should have just ended in the previous season.

Glad I never finished it, what a car crash of an ending

2

u/ChuckCarmichael 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah, I dropped it after season 4. It felt like it had done its thing, run its course, and they were clearly just setting up Morgan to stretch the show for as long as possible.

5

u/NEpatsfan64 6d ago

I've rewatched a couple times and always just stop at the end of season 4.

Morgan never should've got the Intersect, Sarah never should've lost her memories. It would've been so much more fun for Chuck to just get the Intersect back and have the final season be full of the usual Chuck shennanigans

The opposite of this? In The Good Place, in order to try to prevent the main characters from conducting a study that would fundamentally change the entire afterlife, Shawn does a low-blow and throws in Chidi's ex into the experiment. Knowing that he's a nervous wreck and would completely tank this if he has any memories of her AND Eleanor, he lets his memories get wiped all the way back to Season 1 Chidi.

u/AnomalousStoryteller 6d ago

Wow, what a callback to a show that I liked back in the day. And yes, I hated how it ended as it basically goes back to square one

Network takes a lot of blame for me.

From Season 3-5 they we're given 13 episode runs, and 8 or so optional extensions that the network could have. Every year the network asked for 8 more episode late into creation.

Season 3 was intended to end with Shaw's shooting in Paris.

Season 5 was intended to end with Shaw's return.

It was really noticeable in season 4. It had this great ending with saving Chuck's mom and defeating Timothy Dalton, only to not end. Instead it kept going with the glued on plot about Timothy Dalton's secret daughter who's nice at first and then suddenly turns evil completely out of nowhere.

1

u/TLO_Is_Overrated 6d ago

I completely forgot about those 8.

I thought that Dalton lasted the entire season - that they must've got told earlier that they need another 8 episodes.

Nope it was that forgettable.

I can't remember much of that Season - other than the episode where Dalton turns being great.

u/J5892 6d ago

I didn't mind the ending, but what really stops me from rewatching is Zachary Levi's entire existence.

Like, how do you play Chuck for 5 years, and just keep being John Casey IRL (without any of the positive aspects of his character).

1

u/SchrodingersNinja 6d ago

Ya know, I definitely saw all of Chuck, but I remember almost none of it. Was Chevy Chase on it? I remember it had a "Oh, shit, we got renewed?" problem where they'd wrap shit up, and they suddenly have to reinvent things for a new season.

1

u/dnjprod 6d ago

Leaving the show with that ending is a travesty.

1

u/TheCavis 6d ago

I choose to believe Morganโ€™s theory that she would get her memories back with one magical kiss (the end of the last episode).

1

u/Significant-Ad213 6d ago

Oh god I loved chuck so much too ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ if I remember right, they even try and do something to get her to remember yea? And it fails or something and she permanently loses her memories
