I have an experience with many different types of invertebrates, including exotic roach species, amblypygids, isopods, beetles, praying mantises, pseudoscorpions, and a few random inverts that I can’t think of off the top of my head.
I’m honestly not that interested in tarantulas 😅, but I am extremely interested in keeping this species in particular given their incredible beauty and potential as a display animal living in a large, heavily planted vertical enclosure.
I’ve read that they have medically significant venom, but I’ve yet to have invertebrates escape from their enclosures under my care because my wife fears them greatly and therefore I take great care to contain everything that I keep. I would prefer to get a sling so I can witness each stage of its development. I plan to keep it in a tarantula cribs treehouse enclosure so I can utilize the multi-door setup for maintenance with a low chance of escape. I have a still air box and I’m actually planning to do most if not all of my maintenance inside of it since it would completely prevent the animal from escaping into my home.
I’m primarily posting here to see if there are any holes in my plan, or any pitfalls that I’ve yet to consider that more experienced T keepers are aware of. Many of the inverts I keep now have stricter husbandry requirements than P. metallica so I’m not so much concerned about care requirements as I am about other factors that I may be unaware of as someone who’s never kept tarantulas before.
Oh I actually have one final question: does PTFE prevent arboreal tarantulas from scaling walls or is it not really effective? I’m torn between trying it even if it is effective because I don’t want to risk any falls since I’ve read about how fragile Ts are.
