All Snake ID Requests Should Be Submitted to /r/WhatsThisSnake
reddit.comHi everyone! I wanted to let you know that we're now going to redirect all Snake ID requests to the curated place for them, /r/whatsthissnake. As /r/snakes and /r/whatsthissnake have developed side by side we find ourselves in a position where we are running two parallel subreddits, but with slightly different rules. We hope is that this streamline into WhatsThisSnake will be gentle - we don't want a snake to go unidentified because we're learning how best to handle IDs. There is going to be a transition period where we still get a lot of ID requests here, so please do your part to kindly help !redirect people in need and by reporting jokes, misinformation and other problematic comments.
This spring Reddit is more popular than ever and it is hard for the moderation team to keep up. When I founded /r/whatsthissnake 12 years ago, with on average one request every day, I never imagined we'd have 150K members and 20k people a day browsing the subreddit. In the past, we've made a number of incremental changes that have been so helpful they have been instituted other places on Reddit, from introducing the term "Reliable Responder", to developing the bot and tweaking our community resources so that every Reliable Responder can choose to perform mod actions. We hope that these changes will allow us not only to maintain the level of quality provided but to reduce workload on the moderation team, because honestly, moderator burnout is a serious problem. They are doing this for free and you would no believe the abuse they receive here - not just from me, but from the users too. If you see a moderator or other flaired user in cleaning up a thread, espcially in these busy, snakey spring months in North America, throw em a thanks.

Moderator Announcement Rule Change - Posts concerning individual or private ownership or care of medically significant species are not allowed. Posts involving animals in zoos, institutions or accredited breeding facilities are allowed with proper contextualization.
It’s a fact of life that no matter how much context we provide to our posts, when someone sees something interesting, they want to imitate it. Each day /r/snakes puts around one hundred thousand impressionable people face to face with snake related images, text and ideas. Faced with this responsibility, and with an increasing number of recent, low quality posts concerning medically significant snakes, we have to choose the right level of content we allow.
Recent low quality posts concerning captive venomous care include improper use of personal protective equipment, poor quality/security housing, very inexperienced keepers asking (and receiving!) advice on how to keep and breed their first venomous snakes and straight up animal abuse reposted from social media. Many of these clearly rule-breaking posts are removed before you see them, but a growing number of posts are clearly low quality, irresponsible content but don’t explicitly violate the rules. Over the past three years the mods have debated a rule change and we have decided to only allow posts involving venomous snakes if they are from an accredited zoo or institution. In short - we’re going to remove posts involving the private care and ownership of medically significant snakes.
Many modern herpetology texts recommend against individual private ownership of medically significant snakes. We don’t take a stand on what anyone wants to do legally, ethically and with their own time, but we do have to regulate what is posted, shared and thus propagated here. In short, we don’t care what you do, but don’t post it here. Besides being a lighting rod for the low quality content discussed above, private ownership offers unique challenges that are better suited for an institutional or team setting. Snakes are escape artists as well as attractive nuisances and must be contained outside of personal residential spaces in secure, locking enclosures to prevent both snake egress and human ingress as well as secondarily in a sealed room or facility behind a windowed door with no items on the floor under which an escaped snake can hide or avoid detection. It takes a team to execute an envenomation plan and the cost of antivenom is beyond that of most private owners, has a short shelf life and when antivenom is borrowed from institutional stocks it puts those keepers at risk.
Zoos and institutions don’t always do it better, but the onus is on them to provide best practices in care. If we limit posts to places where a team of people works together to provide a standard of care, usually for the right reasons, we can limit what we propagate on the platform.
We do not recommend any other available subreddits as well-moderated sources of captive venomous keeping. The most popular places on social media dedicated to this are inundated with low quality posts and comments and even when they outright ban irresponsible behavior, examples of the low quality content we remove are highly upvoted, and content is often sensationalist, psychopathic or disturbing. Please don’t suggest a specific place in the comments of this post. We’re aware of the options and we’re choosing not to redirect or name other online spaces.
Posts on wild venomous species are still allowed as usual with a species name and a location, but please be sure to see Rule 6 (unchanged) on what amount of contact and PPE use we find acceptable for sharing online.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID Will he ok under this bowl until morning!
It’s about midnight in Florida and I just found this guy in my house. I didn’t know what to do so I just grabbed a bowl and put it over the snake. I don’t normally seek out snakes. I also normally don’t pick up snakes. I thought I would just leave him under this bowl until the morning and then figure out what to do. I just don’t want him to suffocate. Do you think he will be OK until morning? I doubt I sleep much tonight. I plan on having them out of the house by 7 AM. I just don’t know how yet. I think we both may have stressed each other out.
Edit: it’s just a baby
Edit #2 I slid a piece of cardboard under the bowl and got him outside. I guess I just needed a little encouragement. Thank you.

Pet Snake Pictures Just got my first snake!!
Hi guys!! New to actually posting on reddit but you’ve all been very helpful while I lurked and researched, so I wanted to show off my baby and his new home since I picked him up today. His name is Flapjack and he’s an (almost) 2 month old Honduran milk snake!
I have him in a 36x18x18 bioactive and he seems to like it so far :-) There are a couple fake decorations I bought last-minute in there because he’s a bit smaller than I expected and I was worried I didn’t have enough clutter, I’ll replace those eventually but I’m going to let him get comfortable first. I think the first order of business will be getting him more branches so he can climb lol I think he likes it
This is my first pet that isn’t a cat so if anyone has advice for new owners please share! I’ve done a lot of research but I know misinformation is really common with exotic pets and there’s not as many resources on milk snakes compared to, like, ball pythons, let alone Honduran milks specifically :-/ I want to do the best I can I am SO in love with this little guy!!

Pet Snake Questions Woma Python Care help
Recently got a Woma python and I’ve looked extensively into the care however it really seems there humidity requirements are and everyone says there quite hardy but people also say they are prone to scale rot. My tank is heavily decorated and I have the heat requirements down. I’m running a 60 40 top soil and sand mix on the warm side of the enclosure and a 60/20/20 of top soil sand and coco coir on the cool side of the enclosure. The humidity on the warm side is about 50 as I live in Florida and the cool side humidity typical sits at 70 to 80 after watering some of my plants. Is this okay or do you think he will end up staying on the warm side more often as it is just too humid. Open to as much advice or critiques as necessary thank you so much.

Pet Snake Pictures Scared for my new baby snake
hey guys, i recently got a snake, and all was well and good. She ate on the 7th day that i got her/him so i was quite happy. But now he/she has gone into shed and i have not seen her out in about 7 days. I got here now 2,5 weeks and the setup. i have a warm side witg temps generally between 26.5 to 27 (somewhat below ideal, i am aware, and am fixing it (as you can see by the insulating foam). i will be having them higher again tomorrow.) but thats all beside the point. She recently went into what i believe to be shedding and went hiding for about 5 days. i got scared and found him/her. but i think with the light that i used to find her i scared her and now i havent seen her anywhere. i have found a hole in the ground that i suspect she dug into. The humiditie is around 60-70% and i kept it somewhat higher during the last days into something along the line sof 65-72%. I just dont know what to do. Should i just leave it be and hope she/he comes out again sometime? or shouldi actively look for her? im pretty scared she/he is going to die of starvation. Also she/he is around 2 months old now.

Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID Sharing cuteness
Not rare by any means, but I figured the sub would enjoy the story to go along with the picture.
The blue boy was almost turned into fertilizer by my tractor mower, but I noticed him in the grass after I mowed over its head once. Note the cute little grass hat 😅
Second red one included for fun.
Both snakes were relocated a few yards away for safety reasons.
Surprisingly neither of them gave me the stink!

Pet Snake Questions Looking for technical advice for an enclosure for Pantherophis Guttatus ( Corn Snake)
Hi guys !
I am planning to get my first Corn Snake soon ( juvenile)
And i am planning to get a 45x45x45 for the first year.
I made a lot of research on these snakes and they are known to live in pretty much all environnement ( Us Swamps, forests and dry grasslands)
I would like to create a bioactive enclosure, can i do it using a heating mat only?(No heat lamp)
Can i go for something like those examples above? Something like a forest with moss, and ficus pumila etc...?
I don't want to create a Tropical enclosure it does not suits them but something well planted and looking good and natural.
I've seen that natural soil could cause problems but i don't like the "safe" substrates..
I would love to see some enclosure examples from u guys and get advice on how to heat it properly and if it's suitable with a heating mat?
Thanks

Pet Snake Questions Secondary Heat Source for PVC Enclosures
I have a couple enclosures that I've been slopping together, and I would really appreciate some advice or suggestions. I'm sure the main issue is my horribly failed attempt to make a 4 zone enclosure, but I'm hoping I can still save it.
My enclosures are the standard 4×2×2 PVCs, and I currently using 125W Reptirad RHPs as the main heat source, and it has a great gradient. But it is failing to heat up the warm side hide. I'm using a temp gun, and the top surface of the hide is 90-92, but the temp of the hide is between 76-78 degrees.
I have a Herpstat 4 to control everything, with a lot of past experience in how to use them. I just want to find the best solution. They have access to a large 12"×18" basking area at 92 24/7, but that's not quite good enough. I still need to heat the hide somehow.
I am thinking a UTH, even though it's PVC. Thermostat controlled heat tape has worked for decades. Agreed that it shouldn't be the sole or primary heat source, but in this situation, has anyone come up with a better method? I'm failing to find much, but I am sure other keepers have gone through this. I'm hoping someone has come up with a solution that I just can't seem to find.
Thanks everyone!
