Hardware Question Problems with RGB output Rev 3-6 AES

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello!

i'm having some issues with RGB output on my Neo Geo AES.

Its a revision 3-6, connected to a Sony KX1211-HG CRT. Composite output works fine, but the much, much crisper looking RGB has image stability problems.

RGB output is via Insurrection Industries RGB SCART cable to a 34pin RGB adapter from Sunthar's store, into the 34pin RGB input on the Sony CRT. Composite out is just the original stock neogeo composite cable.

The image quality problems are really wierd - some of the time the image is a perfect RGB, especially on still screens. But during gameplay or in motion, there is heavy flickering, image distortion (bottom of screen bends to the right), and a black bar across the top of the screen which "squashes" the image.

I'm working my way through what the problem might be, but as i don't have another Neogeo (or another CRT) to test on, its quite difficult!

Searching the internet, one problem that comes up is the lack of RGB CSYNC on model 3-6 Neo Geos, which my SCART cable is wired for. Might that be related to the problem? Any other ideas?

RAC J600S Joystick Review

This thing rocks. It cost me $58 shipped with a coupon from AliExpress. The joystick is a little springy and the buttons have a longer travel since they're new. But it works great for KoF and shmups on my MVS. I changed out the stock ball top since it's smaller and I have big giant hands. It comes with an extra red button.

It's small but surprisingly heavy with a metal base and a plexiglass face, the actual paint is underneath. It's not professional grade but it's good enough to play Neo-Geo. The surface has no angle and is flat, but it has enough space for your hand to rest comfortably.

Given how hard it is to find a good joystick for the Neo-Geo at an affordable price, this thing is a must.

Self-Promo Neo Geo on the couch: NeoBox now runs on iPhone + iPad!

A while back I posted here about the only AES I ever saw as a kid, the one my sister's friends made us earn with chores and choreographed kung-fu fights, and how that turned into NeoBox, a Neo Geo emulator I built for my Mac.

I made a short video of that story and the app (Reddit won't take video uploads here):

Since then the thing I kept wanting was to play on the couch, so I've spent my nights and weekends bringing it to iPad and iPhone. 2.0 just shipped. The touch controls copy the Neo Geo pad layout and the CRT shader makes the iPad look pretty close to a cabinet to my eyes. With a controller connected it's basically a tiny AES.

Some details for the folks here:

  • MAME romsets and .neo files both work, including the late encrypted carts (KOF 2003, Metal Slug 5, etc)
  • You can switch AES / MVS / Universe BIOS and region per game
  • Memory cards are per game, so your high scores and settings don't clobber each other
  • Mac buyers get the iPhone/iPad version free

You still bring your own ROMs and BIOS. Runs on the Geolith core by Rupert Carmichael, credited in the app.

Also, I was happy to contribute a simple fix back to Geolith that improved its performance on BSD/Darwin systems... this REALLY was a major factor for iPhone performance! The TLDR was that frame time went from 8.5 ms to 1.65 ms with this change

Rupert was gracious enough to merge it into the project: https://gitlab.com/jgemu/geolith/-/merge_requests/64

Still hoping this thing funds my AES+ :)

Neo Turf Masters (1996) now has a byte-exact, fully classified decompilation; sources public, no ROMs distributed

Repo: https://github.com/blakebratcher/ntm-decomp

Both program ROMs are fully classified and byte-exact:

  • P1 68000 (2 MiB): 100% classified, rebuilt SHA-256 matches.
  • M1 Z80 (128 KiB): 100% classified, rebuilt SHA-256 matches.
  • 1,082 named 68000 functions + 335 blocks, 18 Z80 functions + 310 blocks.
  • 582 tests locally; MAME boot acceptance passes.

Full disclosure: this was built with Claude and DeepSeek agents running parallel decompilation lanes, Ghidra, MAME/unidasm, and REA, with myself as the human coordinator reviewing/integrating and Codex independently verifying the semantic acceptance. The agents did the bulk of the lane work; the byte gate and evidence, not model confidence, decided every claim.

Neo Turf Masters-specific bits:

  • 4 courses x 18 hole records, parser-validated tilemaps.
  • An inputs-only MAME harness played 141 hole advances across 15 scenarios, including 2P and the how-to-play demo.
  • AES memory-card load/save, level select and the stats page ran under MAME.
  • Found a reachable divide-by-zero crash in the shipped game (fixed_div_scaled, 0x63504) on two minimum-power putter shots at course 1 hole 1.
  • 3 accepted semantic residuals, documented; no ROMs distributed; MIT for original work with a game-content carve-out.

No ROMs here. Bring your own dump, set NTMD_ROM, then run make setup && make check.

Hyper Neo Geo 64 Doom on Hyper Neo Geo 64

Heyo everyone !

After quite a bit of work and guesswork, I managed to build and run DoomGeneric on MAME, emulating a Hyper Neo Geo 64 !

Tech talk:
My video driver still requires some work and I don't have inputs (yet), I didn't had the courage to poke around the IO MCU firmware. The BIOS handoff to the cart and how to render a ""bitmap"" took a while, as the hardware doesn't seems to be able to do a basic frame buffer (Or not currently discovered)

So, the ROM holds a lookup table of tiles, which is one for every pair of color indices, with the left half of each tile showing the first color and the right half the second. Every time we need to rrnder something, the CPU converts each pixel pairs of Doom 320x200 buffer and selects the (hopefully) matching tile, then scaled to 512x448. Tiles are generated by a Go program which generate the 8x8 tiles for every pair of 8 bit color (65536 tiles). Yes, it's a bruteforce way to have a fb.

It's a bit slow but get the job done and I don't think it will work on real hardware though. I have a shift issue in my driver somewhere, that's why the colors are completely off btw.

Stock GCC 16.2.0 with newlib 4.6.0, basic custom Crt0 to invalidate cache/setup base MIPS registers/tell the BIOS to start in quiet mode (Avoid embedding text for the BIOS, as the cart has the font)/exception handler/tells the BIOS where to DMA the whole program and where to jump and writes the cart header to make the BIOS not reject the custom cart image.

Kudos to MAME devs to documenting and implementing the hng64!

This is an authentic MVS to AES conversion using a sac cart. This was purchased over 10 years ago. The original seller said it was purchased from a Singapore seller. I remember the seller from Singapore selling these on EBay right after the Neo Geo Freak craze. And that it was being sold around $350 at the time. Much cheaper than Neo Geo Freaks $1200 price tag. There really was no other competitors to buy conversions at the time. Does anybody know the guy from Singapore that made these at the time?

Self-Promo MVS to AES Converter Community Database

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi folks,

A couple of months ago I made a YouTube video where I did some testing of an MVS converter with a few different types of MVS cartridges.

Since that time, I've set up a site so that we can crowdsource results for all of the different combinations of games, converters, and system types. You can find it at the link below.

https://mvs2aes.gamesboro.net

So far user 92Formula and I have loaded both of our entire collections into the system. We of course welcome anyone who wants to contribute to the project. Just log in and start submitting your results, or look up results for MVS games you are interested in picking up for your AES.

Missing a feature you would like to see? Let me know here or on my Discord. I've set up a channel dedicated to this project.

Hot Take: Porting over a bunch of mid-range arcade game to the NeoGeo is like being a pimp with a stable full of middle-aged moms…or using a Ferrari to deliver DoorDash… if you agree, reply with an equally cynical analogy😉

Question How does the Z80, with only 2KB of RAM, manage to handle all the sound for the NeoGeo?

I know the Neo Geo has incredible sound, thanks to the YM2610. But I didn't realize the Z80 controlling that chip has only 2KB of RAM! I was already impressed by the fact that it uses a Z80, but even more so now, considering the tiny amount of RAM. But how is that possible? Does the Z80 have to store and load audio samples onto the chip? Or does it just modify registers (like volume, pitch, etc.)? How exactly does this sound CPU system work?

I'm working on a NG hardware project. Anyone in Seattle?

Hi there guys,

I'm working on a hardware accessory for the home consoles. I will eventually release the project open source after some testing.

Unfortunately, I have been out of the game for a long time and had no idea flash carts were this expensive. I have a hardware device and a custom test rom, but I don't have the physical HW or the immediate funds to test with.

Is there anyone a bad enough dude in the Seattle area with a flash cart who could help me out with testing?

Edit: I also am working on a CD ISO for my hardware so possibly a CD system might work too. But I have less confidence in the CD version right now.

Hello everyone,

With renewed interest in the Neo Geo AES, MVS and upcoming AES+, we're pleased to introduce a new work-in-progress build of Sky Lance, an original vertical-scrolling arcade shooter developed with our opensource NeoGeoSDK v1.7.3 and AES BIOS EagleBIOS.

Sky Lance joins Maiya: Super Nature Girl as another game demonstrating the capabilities of NeoGeoSDK.

Youtube Demo :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAqq0Y5Z2ts

SKY LANCE ~ THE MISSION

A rogue military faction has seized seven regions, cutting off towns and villages behind heavily defended airfields, radar stations and missile batteries.

The peacekeeping command deploys its fastest squadron: SKY LANCE.

Fly across hostile territory, destroy enemy command posts, break through heavily defended positions and confront powerful bosses, from battleships and tank fortresses to the final stronghold, the Crimson Citadel.

Restore the peace. Bring the people home.

CHOOSE YOUR PILOT

  • Rook ~ F-16 Blue Lance: Precise handling.
  • Kira ~ F-35 Green Wing: Stealth-focused combat.
  • Blaze ~ F-15 Red Striker: Aggressive flying.

GAMEPLAY FEATURES

  • Three selectable pilots, each with distinct handling, weapons and super power.
  • Seven scrolling routes featuring land and sea.
  • Enemy fighters, tanks, boats, submarines....
  • Three guarded command targets per route, with radar installations and mini-boss encounters.
  • Large boss arenas and powerful enemy formations.
  • Banking, barrel rolls, high-G climbs, Split-S dives and afterburner manoeuvres.
  • Chaff countermeasures against incoming guided hazards.
  • Cockpit instruments, including radar, attitude indicator and G meter.
  • Animated effects, parallax clouds and arcade difficulty settings.

UNDER THE HOOD ~ NEOGEOSDK v1.7.3

Sky Lance also serves as the testbed for our new vertical shooter module.

The engine introduces:

  • Fractional and reverse vertical scrolling.
  • Smooth camera tracking with bounded movement.
  • Independently scrolling parallax layers.
  • Per-scanline sprite-strip budgeting to respect Neo Geo hardware limits.
  • Depth-based object placement and improved sprite management.
  • Our native Z80/YM2610 sound driver.

The goal is to provide developers with reusable tools for creating their own Neo Geo arcade games.

AES+ Plaion refund

I’m having a pretty frustrating experience with PLAION and PayPal Buyer Protection and I’m curious if anyone has dealt with something similar.

On April 29, 2026 I paid €868.99 to PLAION for a NEOGEO AES+ Ultimate Edition.

Months later I found out online that delivery had been delayed by roughly a year, until September 2027. PLAION never proactively emailed me about that major delay.

Because of this, I cancelled the order and requested a full refund.

PLAION later confirmed in writing that:

• my order was cancelled
• a refund of €868.99 would be issued to my original payment method
• the refund was being processed by their Finance Team

However, the money was never refunded.

I had already opened a PayPal dispute. Despite the item never being shipped, the order being cancelled, and the refund not being received, PayPal initially closed the case in favour of PLAION without giving me a meaningful explanation.

That is what I found particularly concerning. This seems exactly like the kind of situation Buyer Protection should cover: the seller has my €868.99, no product was delivered, the order was cancelled, and the promised refund never arrived.

I contacted PayPal support again today, provided all the emails and evidence, and they have now reopened the dispute.

At this point, regardless of how this ends, I will never buy anything from PLAION again. Ever. The delay, lack of proactive communication, and failure to actually return my money after confirming the refund have completely destroyed my trust in them.

Has anyone had a similar experience with PLAION/Replai or with PayPal initially rejecting a claim like this? Did PayPal eventually refund you after the case was reopened?

Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition for Neo Geo CD

Thumbnail
gallery
20 Upvotes

I have released my first version of Street Fighter II Champion Edition for the Neo Geo CD port. It's a beta and it has some graphical glitches and small bugs, but it's playable and enjoyable from start to finish. The game runs from a Neo Geo CD SD Loader, where it works really well, and you can also burn it to a CD-R. I should warn you, though, that I've tested it very little on CD-R; most of the testing was done with the SD Loader. Even so, given the interest the port has generated, I've decided to release it now.

I've tried to stay as faithful as possible to the game's scrolling, but I couldn't make it identical without running out of CPU; maybe someone smarter and more knowledgeable can do better. I've removed the intro animation because I couldn't get it to run smoothly enough, and in the end it isn't essential. The attract mode demo fights are also gone, since they would add unnecessary CD loading.

There's no need to report bugs: I already have an extensive list. Just enjoy it.

What else has been cut?

On some stages I had to remove some background animations or even objects, because for now I haven't found a way to stop them showing inconsistencies or appearing in the wrong background layer. These include Honda's red lantern, the top of a temple on Ryu's stage, the elephants' trunk movement on Dhalsim's stage, and the cyclists in Chun-Li's street. I went back and forth a lot on that last one, since they weren't causing that many problems. I also considered removing the rocking of Ken's boat, but I've kept it for now.

After two or three fights, Ryu's head usually starts flickering when you don't move him. Chun-Li occasionally loses a body sprite, though it comes back fine. Sometimes part of Ken's shoulder disappears, and strange things happen to Vega when he loses his claw. Honda's stage sometimes shows glitches on the ceiling, and on Guile's stage there's a horizontal band that takes longer to appear. In the bonus stages lots of things sometimes flicker, a sprite may appear incorrectly, and the original scoreboard shows up when they end. The fade-outs at the end of fights can show sprites disappearing too early. The game also has occasional slowdowns, which can be noticeable on stages like Honda's or Ken's. The game's endings, with their animations and texts, haven't been thoroughly checked yet.

If you burn this version to a CD-R, you'll notice the music sometimes starts late. Also, I've tested the game far less on CD-R, so I apologise in advance if it isn't stable enough. I recommend using a good quality CD-R.

How did you deal with the Neo Geo's 4 buttons instead of the arcade's 6?

The best solution I came up with is a Controls section in the options menu that appears before the game starts, where every button, including Select and Start, can be assigned any punch or kick. If you assign an attack to Select or Start, their coin and start functions are disabled during fights. The exception is single-player games: the free player can still press Start to challenge the one playing. There's also an "Easy" option for special moves that makes the game's timing less strict when accepting some attacks.

What is the "Floor" option in the initial menu?

Smooth moves the floor two lines at a time up to a certain point, where it switches to one line at a time so it doesn't look awful. Fast always moves it two lines at a time. The latter saves more CPU, so feel free to try it. With both options, the sky perspective on Guile's stage is disabled.

Will there be an AES or MVS version?

I don't think so, and I won't be the one to try. I believe something like that would need a custom cartridge with extra memory.

Why did I make this port?

Purely for fun, and to see how far you can go using AI for this kind of work. There's no commercial purpose whatsoever. I admit I liked the idea of being the first person to attempt it with such a popular game. I'm not a software engineer or an expert game developer, and I don't claim to be one; I'm just someone with too much free time who enjoys playing around with AI tools.

To those who don't like AI: I understand your reasons and I respect them. For me, it has been a way to make something real that I could never have done on my own, and that would never have been made officially. I only ask that you also respect those of us who enjoy this tool.

Download it at itch for free: https://teo-tormo.itch.io/sf2cengcd
