Discussion Has anyone else been forced to tip at establishments in Montreal?

I’ve noticed that many places in mtl are very bitter about tipping and I’ve had it forced on me many times.

For example, I’ve been to clubs a few times and at the bar within the club, I’ve had the server grab the interac machine out of my hands and insert a 15% tip themselves. When I press them on it, they very rudely tell me that it’s the “minimum.” Or if I pay by cash, they give me a devastated look and guilt trip me into tipping.

Tipping is supposed to be for good service. Not when I’m waiting 30 minutes for you to serve me while you serve people who got there after me.

Another time at a pub in Montreal, I paid the server by cash and the server handed me back my change to which I realized that the change she handed back was short. I then realized it’s because she took a 15% tip for herself without even asking me.

Another time at lac leamy, I asked the bartender how much a drink costs and she goes “it’s $X amount plus tip”

I’ve noticed this pretty much all over Quebec and not even just in Montreal.

It’s the same thing at restaurants, if you don’t tip, they put on a major fuss and call the manager and tell you that you’re obligated to tip for service even though the server only came by my table once.

I want to clarify that there is 0 legal obligation in Quebec to leave a tip. A restaurant can include a “service fee” but they have to either indicate it on the menu or clearly tell you beforehand.

Tip culture has gotten out of hand and I honestly don’t feel sorry for restaurants and bars who are losing money because of people who stopped eating out, they deserve it

Question Francisation est terminé.

Discussion Regarding my peeping Tom (again)

Hi guys. Idk how to link another post but here’s the TLDR

I have a peeping Tom. I asked Reddit what to do and when to call the cops.

My post a few days ago outlined what happened but it doesn’t really matter I deleted it.

But, he does indeed pleasure himself during the act (got video). Filed a police report today. Wondering if it’s worth blasting him since now we know his intent is sexual and awful.

What do you think? Pls be nice guys I’m already gonna need therapy after seeing his face never mind his private areas

Discussion Functional French, but feeling very anxious/ashamed about mistakes.

I work in French currently. I have two different jobs one in a restaurant and one in health care and I usually communicate and read and write in French about 50% of the time at work depending on clients that day.

I have been in Montreal 3 years and I am pretty proud of how far I have come in my French. I love living here and I always am looking to improve. I did francisation and feel grammar is pretty good for me now.

I know I have a bad anglophone accent with the "r' sound and I still make mistakes regarding masculine and feminine. Accent I might have to accept but would love to improve masculine/feminine. Wondering if any anglophones ever really perfect that and have any tips!

Sometimes after a work day I think back on some of the errors I made that day and feel so anxious and ashamed. I feel I am able to provide good services in French but sometimes I do get comments from people things like "on est au quebec icitte" and people making fun of my accent. Obviously I want to improve as much as I can but I feel like we don't necessarily need to strive for absolute perfection when it comes to a second langauge. Just venting and looking for tips! Like I said half my work day is in French, I read novels in French 80% of the time. Not a huge fan of quebecois/french movies so that media is mostly english. Maybe 30% of the time I am with friends I speak french.

Question Pre approved for a 400k home loan where would you look to live at if your work is downtown?

So here it is, I was hoping to ask here if anyone can share advice on whats the best sector to look at living at in the future. We’re torn between staying near the city and getting in a condo or going out the city and going for a home but do not know whats the best option for us long term. Any advice is appreciated! ( especially how to better look for homes )

Thank you.

Edit: In the greater montreal area not just the island, I understand there is no chance in hell for anything decent within the mainland unless one wants to suffocate living in P.A.T.

Événement hope this isn’t against the rules but i’d rather the ticket not go to waste

i have one ticket for olivia rodrigo tonight and i’m not able to use it. i live in new york and planned to make a trip up to go to the show but then i got a new job and now im moving and blah blah. anyway now i have one ticket in section 103 that i can’t sell, so i figured i just give it away to someone. i know this sounds like a scam or whatever but i really don’t think id need any information from you other than your email maybe? idk ive never transferred a ticket via ticketmaster. i figured im not getting the money back either way so i might as well give it to someone who maybe couldn’t afford to go. it’s a pretty good seat too i think, but it is just the one! anyway, let me know. or take this down if it isn’t allowed or whatever.

EDIT: ticket has been claimed! i hope the person has fun. i’m sorry i couldn’t give it to everyone. 🩷

Question Displaced from my Montreal condo for 15+ months after a flood. I’m struggling financially and don’t know where to turn.

Hi everyone,

I’m honestly not sure where else to turn at this point, so I’m hoping someone here might have been through something similar or could help me figure out what to do.

In July 2025, my condo in Montreal was flooded following a city water main break. I had to evacuate in the middle of the night and lost about 80% of my belongings. My unit was declared uninhabitable, and I’ve been displaced ever since.

About a month later, foundation issues were identified in the building. The work needs to be completed before my insurance company can rebuild my unit.

It’s now been over 15 months, and I still have no confirmed date for when I can move back home.

My insurance coverage for relocation expenses ran out in February 2026. Since then, I’ve been paying for temporary accommodation out of pocket while continuing to pay my mortgage and condo fees.

I’m reaching a point where I honestly don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this financially. It’s been an incredibly difficult situation to navigate, and not knowing when I’ll be able to go home makes it even harder.

I’ve tried to find a solution with the condo syndicate and the insurers, but I feel like I’m going in circles.

I’ve asked the syndicate to cover my relocation expenses, particularly because the outstanding foundation work concerns the building’s common elements, but they’ve refused.

The syndicate’s property insurer has told me that, in its view, the foundation cracks are unrelated to the water damage and therefore aren’t covered under the water damage claim.

I’ve also contacted the syndicate’s liability insurer, but they’ve told me they can’t take a position on whether my relocation expenses will be covered.

So here I am, more than 15 months later, still displaced, paying for everything myself, and with no clear timeline for going home.

I’ve contacted a few law firms to understand what my options are, but honestly, I don’t know how I’m supposed to afford all of this. I’m already paying for temporary accommodation, my mortgage and my condo fees every single month. Now I’m facing potentially thousands of dollars in legal fees on top of everything else. I simply can’t afford to pay for all of this, and I feel stuck because I need legal help to figure out my options, but I can not keep up with the costs I’m already carrying. I genuinely don’t know what I’m supposed to do.

Honestly, this whole situation has taken a huge toll on me. I feel like I’ve been trying to find a way forward for months, but I keep hitting a wall. I’m doing my best to figure things out, but I’m exhausted by the uncertainty and the financial pressure, and I really don’t know where else to turn.

I’m posting here in the hope that someone might have been through something similar or might know of a resource I haven’t considered.

Are there any affordable legal resources or organizations in Montreal that could help? Does anyone know a lawyer who specializes in condo syndicate disputes or insurance claims and who might be willing to discuss options without requiring a huge financial commitment upfront?

And if you’ve experienced something similar, were you able to find a solution? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience.

I’m not expecting anyone to solve this for me. I just really need some guidance on where to turn next, because I’m struggling to see a way forward on my own.

Thank you for reading this. ❤️

Question Chat perdu dans le Mile-End

Thumbnail

Bonjour, bonsoir,

Question Policy on gift giving to emergency workers?

• Upvotes

Hey folks, I'm wondering what's the policy on offering paramedics and firefighters gifts such as pastries or a regular gift set for the holidays. I understand some areas you cannot make it yourself and it has to be store bought but I just wanna check if someone already did it and or knows what's the best course of action

Discussion Stolen Halloween Decoration

To the POS who stole an inflatable off my front lawn: First of all, it was an epic UFO scene abducting a cow. Who steals that?! 🛸🐄
I don’t know who you are, but there’s a special place in hell reserved for people who steal Halloween decorations from 3-year-olds.
Had to tell my daughter the UFO flew away…Thankfully, she bought it.
Anyway, I’m buying another one, and this time I’m considering some Home Alone-style security measures. MTL, hit me with your most creative booby trap ideas.
