Why do they know where their principal lives? I’ve never known the address of any teacher over ever had

261

u/abenevolentgod Aug 22 '26

my completely made up response is one of the kids lives near him and sees him in the neighborhood.

u/FullofContradictions Aug 22 '26

My principal had a kid who was a few years behind me in school. That kid rode the bus. The bus stopped at his house.

Ergo, we all knew where the principal lived.

I'm a teacher, and a lot of my kids live near me and know where I live. It happens.

7

u/lylalexie Aug 22 '26

I’m a teacher and I have had students try to figure out where I lived before. It wasn’t malicious but they did rattle off my license plate number and were trying to get info about where I moved to. Didn’t sit right with me so now I have a policy of not telling them where I live.

This is my teacher nightmare 😄

I thought it would be too when I first realized it but it's actually been okay. They don't come by my house and mess with me at all. They just holler at me when I'm driving in and out of the neighborhood and they spot me. I also get yelled at a lot in the Walmart or whatever. They're always so excited to see me like they don't realize that I'm a real person outside of school or something.

They very likely just went there in the morning for a harmless and wholesome prank. Teacher seemed to love it too. I really struggle to see what’s wrong about it.

u/smoothsensation Aug 22 '26

Just opinions of people who. Are terminally online.

4

u/N9204 Aug 22 '26

It's just a privacy thing. When you work in education, school is work, students are work, you give them all your best, but when you're at home, you do not want work. He seems happy about it, so no harm done, but if I were the principal in this circumstance (not enough money in the world for me to be admin), I'd be a little "jfc, how do they know where I live?" Then again, I also live a county over from where I work.

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

It’s creepy and invasive. Leave people alone.

13

u/Fucked-to-fit Aug 22 '26

Based on this comment I’m almost certain your students don’t agree with those statements

5

u/ahmc84 Aug 22 '26

The easiest way to keep students from visiting you at home is to live as far outside of the district as you can tolerate.

u/oliviertail Aug 22 '26

“Even though I’m a really great teacher” says only the not really great teacher. Part of “being really great” at something is also knowing that you aren’t. Only the worsts say that they’re great. Sounds like “I’ve peaked”.

I live in a small town. This is extremely common here

1

u/Mr-MuffinMan Aug 22 '26

I could be wrong but that looks more like a classic suburban neighborhood of a city than a small town.

Obviously small towns have a range but I'm sure whatever suburb this is isn't considered a small town.

-3

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

Horrifying.

0

u/tinyalley Aug 22 '26

THE HORROR!!!!!

81

u/deafhuman Aug 22 '26

Small town relations maybe. If a student also lives in the neighbourhood, it's enough.

15

u/say-crack-again Aug 22 '26

Yup, my town had <1500 people and I not only knew where my principal lived, but am still friends with him on fb.

14

u/IWantALargeFarva Aug 22 '26

You must not be from a small town. I would leave wine on the porch of my daughter’s kindergarten teacher during Covid because I felt bad for her lol. Their old drama teacher lives 2 minutes from us. Music director is about 7 minutes from us. Their elementary band teacher and their current drama costumer are married and live directly behind us. Their elementary school drama teacher is my best friend. One kid has vacationed with the family of the technology teacher. I’ve gone out for ice cream with the last principal when I was in her town. Their middle school English teacher takes walks through our neighborhood with her baby. I’m just now realizing that we know where most of their teachers live lol.

-3

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

I live in a small town. I don’t even know my neighbours name.

2

u/IWantALargeFarva Aug 22 '26

Honestly, that’s kind of sad. My neighbors are awesome. They’ve literally borrowed a cup of sugar before. Share their watermelon with my kid who is obsessed with it. We dog sit for them. They’ve fed our cat. We pay the teenager to cut our lawn. About 6 of us pitch in for bug chemicals and my neighbor sprays the yards. We coordinated our kids’ graduation parties so we could share a lot of things. Get packages for each other if someone is away. My kids babysit for them. They’ve picked up my daughter from work so she didn’t have to walk in the rain. We help each other shovel snow. Damn, I need to go take them all a care package, because I really am lucky.

1

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

I want nothing more in life than to be left alone. Hopefully one day I will live somewhere where I don’t have any neighbours.

7

u/Not_Today_007 Aug 22 '26

It could be that one of the kids are friends with his kids. That's how I knew where some of my teachers lived.

7

u/Unlimited_Accounts Aug 22 '26

“Cya mom! Gonna go to a sleepover at the principal’s house”

4

u/ahmc84 Aug 22 '26

Unless the person specifically has taken steps to hide such information, just about anyone's address can be easily found online if their name is unique enough or you can narrow the location down to a small enough area (and presuming the person has lived at the address long enough for public records to find their way to these sites).

-1

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

Not in my country. We have something called “privacy laws”.

1

u/ahmc84 Aug 22 '26

In most cases it's really just an online version of a phone book, though I suspect they're getting the data from other types of sources as well (some sites offer age ranges for people as well). It all comes down to public records.

9

u/Gnonthgol Aug 22 '26

If your classmates all agreed on a sleepover at your teachers front yard and tasked you with finding their address you probably would have been able to figure it out.

0

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

Maybe. But my response to such a request would have been “Fuck no!”

3

u/17scorpio17 Aug 22 '26

its not that hard to find an address

4

u/laharmon Aug 22 '26

Anyone who owns their home, their address is public information through any county/township PVA records. Most of them have them available online so you don’t even need to go to the courthouse.

3

u/Ms_Business Aug 22 '26

I have 1-2 kids a year who randomly will hold up their laptops and go “is this your house?” Luckily it’s always been the kids who are genuinely goofy who have done that in the past. But yeah, publicly available information.

-1

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

Not in my country.

Edit - why have I been downvoted for stating a fact?

2

u/KnowItOrBlowIt Aug 22 '26

My high school physics teacher lived on my street 5 houses down. I don't live in a small town.

2

u/random_user_number_5 Aug 22 '26

Depending on where you live this is public knowledge that can easily be found online. Look into your local property appraiser.

2

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

Not a thing in my country.

2

u/TiborJankovsky Aug 22 '26

You must not live in a small town

2

u/Auta-Magetta Aug 22 '26

I teach in a town of 3,000 people. All the kids know where I live. Sometimes I’ll be out of the house and get a ring camera notification and kids will be standing at the door waving to me. It’s very sweet most of the time.

1

u/Informal-Eggplant-27 Aug 22 '26

Never heard of the white pages…?

4

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

I haven’t. I assume that’s an American thing?

0

u/tomottov Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 22 '26

Not really.

Plenty of countries around the world have or had a telephone / addresses directory with the "white pages" name in their own language. Similarly, there are the "Yellow Pages".

1

u/KamikazeFox_ Aug 22 '26

Have you met the internet? Shits changed since we were at school.

1

u/texastimr Aug 22 '26

I knew where the principal and most other teachers lived when I was a kid - at the convent connected to the school.

1

u/Lil_Richard Aug 22 '26

To prank one of the teaches in my high school we just had someone follow them home. Small town so everyone lived pretty close

1

u/TY_NowGFY Aug 22 '26

Mine lived on the other side of the football field.  He had nowhere to hide 🤣

0

u/snack-on Aug 22 '26

Teachers ride the school buses too you know? And my classmate was the principal's kid so we all knew where she lived. We used to party at her place.

2

u/If_you_have_Ghost Aug 22 '26

We don’t have school buses where I’m from.

1

u/Q0T3 Aug 22 '26

I don't think that's very common. Teachers might have road your school bus. But I've never heard about a teacher riding the school bus home.

1

u/snack-on Aug 22 '26

I am not in America. In my country, most private schools have school buses.
Private schools with huge campuses are often on the outskirts of the city and it's simply not feasible for parents to drive them there. A lot of parents and teachers also don't have cars. So dedicated school buses are the best choice.

If the teacher's own kids are taking the bus to the same school, then why can't they as well?

2

u/Q0T3 Aug 22 '26

That makes a lot more sense. Our teachers get here before the students and leave hours after the students.

-1

u/lllyyyynnn Aug 22 '26

how did they get there as well it looks like a suburb in the middle of nowhere.
