Cool funkis building that I like!

This building was famously known within the urbanex community in the 2000s-2010s as "puluhelvetti" (pigeon hell) due to some of its floors housing pigeon nests. It was also in very bad condition during that era. Nowadays it is part of Kuvataideakatemia's kampus.

Housing / Living Downstairs neighbour possibly trying to get us evicted?

Hi,
Looking for advice. We live in an apartment building, moved here at the start of September. Ever since we moved, downstairs neighbour has had issue with us making too much noise, and also noise at night. She first approached us in a friendly, almost saccharine manner, asking us if we know the house rules (yes, we did), then again multiple times, always complaining about awful noise coming from us. She peppered in a few uncomfortable details from her personal life to, I guess, garner some pity, or what? Mind you, we do not know this woman at all. Our landlord recommended that we do not respond to the door, and told us there’s been issues with her in the past, she apparently complained about every other tenant living in our apartment before us as well. So we stopped opening. That resulted in her immediately turning openly hostile, sending us a written message through our post-box (threatening action, telling a sob story about us being so loud that she had to book a hotel), coming to our doors at night (I suppose during these alleged “noisy” times) to bang on the door, waking our child up. Last week she called the police on us - police just confirmed the address and asked what’s up, we were confused (it was close to midnight) and they almost immediately dropped it as baseless. OK then? Today we were visited by a dude from house association, who came to talk to us to confirm we “really know the rules of the house” (still yes, we do), and apparently she filed some sort of disturbance report with the City of Helsinki. We are at loss, don’t know where this is going, but it’s been crappy.

My question is - is there some counter-action we can do? Are we in any real danger of eviction? Anybody here has any experience, from any side of this - living with a disturbing neighbour or being accused of being a disturbing neighbour?

Context: the noises are we allegedly make is “run loud machines after the start of yörauha” - we did once or twice when we just moved in accidentally, but never again after the first contact with her, which is weeks ago. Also apparently we make construction noises after the start of yörauha. No, we do not. We have a one year old who has a bedtime between 21-22. We talk in whispers and walk in tiptoes after he’s down. We sometimes use dishwasher on quiet mode, but we’ve been assured by the landlord that that’s completely OK to do. Also showering, using the toilet, this type of thing. Our building is from 1982 (one of those brick ones), and we have parquet floors. We hear our upstairs neighbours as well, but we don’t experience any disturbance as brutal as she describes, just normal “living with people” noises, like floor creaks and stuff.

About us: we are a family of two different nationalities, we have two cats and a one year old toddler. She doesn’t complain about the baby being loud, she doesn’t complain about our pets being loud, it’s specifically about machines, or that’s what we gathered. Again, we do not make the noises she describes at the times she describes.

Travel & Tourism Alt, nerdy and geeky shops? Or stuff to see?

I had a spontaneous idea a few weeks ago that I wanted to see the fish at the natural history museum, you all hopefully know which fish I mean 😁 so I just bought a plane ticket and booked a hotel for a few days in Helsinki.

Since traveling from Norway is a bit weird when it comes to planes we're going over monday to thursday next week so we'll have a few days to look around at stuff.

But I've googled a bit, with some dead ends when it comes to alternative and geeky/nerdy shops. And google are not really finnish friendly it seems, so it's a bit fussy on what it shows me.

I've picked up Morticia (?) as long as I can handle the shopkeeper?!? And Cyber shop + some Harry Potter shop which is not my thing, but that's where it stops. Anyone have any local recommendations to where I should check out?

Norway got like one really good nerdy shop, but their clothing department is small and just Killstar.

Question Where to buy dry plant protein (beans/lentils) in bulk for an affordable price around Helsinki?

Hei everyone,

I’m looking to save money on my grocery bills by meal-prepping and cooking plant-based protein in bulk to freeze for the week.

I recently checked the prices at Lidl for their carton-packed beans (400g), and it works out to around €3.30 per kg. Honestly, that doesn't feel very budget-friendly considering how much water weight is in those packs.

I want to switch completely to dry beans, chickpeas, and lentils in large bulk sizes (1kg, 2kg, or 5kg bags) so I can prep them myself.
Where are the best and cheapest places in the Helsinki area to stock up on dry bulk pulses?

Are there specific ethnic markets, international grocers, or online wholesale sites you'd recommend that beat standard supermarket prices?

Kiitos in advance!

Discussion What type of people go to each bar in Helsinki? Give me your most stereotypical answers

I went out last weekend and realized I know nothing about the clientele of Helsinki bars. A friend brought me to a bar named Jackie's and was confronted with approximately 80 platinum-blonde 22-year-olds, and felt totally out of place. What type of bar would you say Jackie's is? And what type of people go to which bars in Helsinki? I feel I need a mental map of Helsinki biggest bars based entirely on the most common stereotypes and prejudices

For example:

-Harju 8: Hipsters, artist-wannabe's, people who own tote bags

-Torni: Tourists, people from the countryside on a visit, upper class couples on first dates

-Random bar: Finance bros, art students, divorced dads, techno goblins and so on

Housing / Living Bedbugs ‼️

I need some advice about bedbugs in a rented apartment in Finland.
We moved into our apartment in August. It’s quite old and was a bit dirty when we moved in. Recently, we discovered bedbugs after my husband got some pretty severe bites on his hand. At first, we thought it was an allergy.
The problem is that I have a 6-week-old newborn, and I really don’t feel safe staying here with my baby. 😟
My contract is fixed-term until next July. Can I terminate it early without paying a penalty because of the bedbug infestation? Who is responsible for arranging and paying for pest control?Has anyone dealt with this situation in Finland? I’d really appreciate any advice!

Question Gym that has spaces for women and isn't too expensive?

Hey, I recently moved to Helsinki and I study in an ammatikoulu. I really need to start going to the gym as I'm really out of shape, but I'm struggling to figure out what gym would work. I'm a student but because I'm not in a university, Unisport is really expensive while my friends from Aalto and Helsinki Uni get it for 17 euros. And additionally, I would want to have a gym with spaces for women only. Please tell me your experience? Which gym is good for my needs? If there is anything under 50 euros per month that would be perfect

Question Affordable sports club or community?

I would like to practice a sport, but I'm broke. Anything from dance, yoga, tennis, skating, genuinely whatever besides idk football or basketball (not my thing).

I don't care if it's a club, community, or a frequent gathering of people, just somewhere I can learn a new thing without it being too expensive, free preferably 💔

Also in the Vantaa area would be nice, thank you.

Housing / Living Moving to Myyrmäki

And unsure if I should be worried? I have been offered a student apartment in the area (5 min away from the Myyrmäki station) and I know the neighborhood has some bad reputation and bunch of drug/alcohol abuse, but how unsafe does it really get with all the families and students still living in the area on a daily basis?
For reference I spent many years living in Denmark, where this issue is practically non existent, and I am also a petite woman, so I am lowkey anxious about having to walk back home late and alone

Question Family crest ring business recommendations

Hey All!

I'm looking for recommendations for where I could get a family crest ring made in the Helsinki region (preferably, though rest of Finland is ok I guess).

Of course I saw a lot of online ads about it, but I'd rather support a local business.

Thanks in advance!

Question Recommendation for C41 photo development in Helsinki?

Hey everyone,
Are there any analog photography enthusiasts here?

Can anyone recommend a good lab for regular c41 development of 35mm film in Helsinki area? I dont need anything special done nor do i need scans, but a lab with fresh chemicals that processes regularly would be nice.

I normally send my film to Carmencita through Kameratori but I need this film sooner than the 6+ weeks it costs to develop there. A weeks wait is fine though.

Thanks!!
