"It was a long and difficult road but thank god we finally got here"

Hits diff

u/TimeForHugs Marshall👨‍⚖️ Jul 21 '22

I dunno what it is but when Marshall turns to ask the guy "Do you have any idea what happened in this very bar," the "Just all kinds of stuff" is super awkward. Like dude probably turned back around like "Okay, crazy guy, that doesn't tell me anything."

I dunno, it's a small thing that bugs me is all. I feel like they could've done something better with it or just not included it at all.

75

u/HistoricalMeat Jul 21 '22

He gets excited to tell them, but realizes 2 things. He can’t summarize it and you had to be there. It’s sort of a wistful reflection on life because the stories that define us will only be special to the people involved.

37

u/android_impostor Jul 21 '22

Yes! I 100% agree! It's my least favorite part of the entire finale

30

u/Foooour Jul 21 '22

"Home. I'm going home"

"Woman I dont know where the fuck you live"

37

u/TheMonji Jul 21 '22

That dialogue isn't really meant to be for the "kids" in the booth.

It's for the gang, and more importantly the audience, to reflect on.

21

u/TimeForHugs Marshall👨‍⚖️ Jul 21 '22

Of course it is. Though they could've done it a lot better, imo. Like have Marshall say to the gang "Think about all that's happened in this very bar" and played a little montage of things that happened through the series.

2

u/Cosmicfeline_ Jan 10 '25

Montages suck

10

u/jaldred_jr Jul 21 '22

They could have even had him stop and reflect and say something like "a lot of things... Make sure you appreciate yours."

9

u/Rock3tDoge Jul 21 '22

Lol Such a horrible line

2

u/Super_Boof Aug 23 '24

I think “everything” or “all of us” or “our lives” would’ve all been much better lines.

1

u/Spartikis Sep 11 '24

I thought he was going to stand up and give them the booth, like pass the torch to the next group of young friends.

1

u/CompleteSort9044 6d ago

It's a good line. He thinks about all the personally momentous occasions that happened in that bar and realizes these kids don't care about this weird guys old drinking stories.

428

u/Linkitivity Jul 21 '22

Is it weird to anyone else that Robin and Lily are Tracy's bridesmaids? Like surely she has other friends.

312

u/FenikzTheMenikz Jul 21 '22

THEY EVEN SHOWED HER FRIENDS! It's a common sitcom trope just to use the main cast as the bridal party to avoid introducing new characters, but we already knew Cindy and her friend (Kelly?) in How Your Mother Met Me. It would have been easy to stick one or both of them up there.

23

u/anand_rishabh Jul 21 '22

Why not all of the above? (Putting aside behind the scenes logistics)

8

u/Ste3e Jul 21 '22

I dont get the whole main cast need to be up there, the office did it perfect with pam and jim because they didnt shy away from the fact that the office friendship and personal relationships are different, we met Jim's brothers and pam's sister but that was it we didnt need to add them in or anything

77

u/AnimusNoctis Jul 21 '22

She had been part of the group for quite a few years at that point. A couple of my fiancĂŠe's bridesmaids were my friends first.

51

u/Hefty-Association-59 Jul 21 '22

I can get behind lily. But robin is just weird for a ton of reasons.

24

u/jameskelsey Jul 21 '22

Kind of like Ted being the best man at Robins wedding.

26

u/Conmebosta Jul 21 '22

He was more like the best man at Barney's wedding than Robin's wedding.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

It's kinda weird, but seeing as I was a groomsman at my sister's wedding for a guy whose last name I didn't know and had never had a conversation with (my sister asked me to be a groomsman) it doesn't seem that far fetched to me.

13

u/shampoo_mohawk_ Jul 21 '22

You didn’t know the last name of your sisters fiancé? That must’ve been a really fast engagement lol

9

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

They're Mormon. It's not uncommon for people to meet, get engaged, and get married within 6 months for Mormons, and I live an hour and a half away so I maybe see my family once a month.

2

u/shampoo_mohawk_ Jul 21 '22

Oh wow that is fast.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

It was a last minute wedding - maybe her friends weren’t available

391

u/crosbot Jul 21 '22

It's cool they made another ending but I still feel like the major issue (salutes) is execution and pacing, not the events.

Overall Ted was quite a tragic character, he had a lot of hard years and I honestly think it was befitting his character. I just wanted a bit more of Tracey and a bit of time to process it first.

265

u/ElCidly Jul 21 '22

Honestly my biggest issue with the finale was the show spending years building up Barney and Robin’s relationship, and then blowing it up 5min into the end. The whole 9th season of building up that wedding, and having Ted complete his arc of getting over Robin turned out to actually be the writers wasting the fans time.

Tracy dying sucks for Ted, but I agree that wouldn’t have been a terrible ending. However instead of having Ted go back to Robin, he should have just kept out into the world ready to love again.

In order to shoehorn in that crapshow of an ending they had to reset Ted, Barney, and Robin’s entire character arcs back to season 1. Most fans didn’t hate the tragedy of Ted losing Tracy, they hated the fact that the whole show turned out to be a massive waste of time, since none of the growth we got to watch from 3 of the 5 main characters was actually true.

93

u/StuHardy Daddy's home. Jul 21 '22

IMO, the first half of season 9 should have been leading up to Barney's & Robin's wedding, with the second half of season 9 being about the relationships progressing since the wedding. The final scene is still Ted meeting Tracy on the platform.

It could have shown Lily & Marshall moving into their role as parents, while still keeping their friends in their life. Shown Ted & Tracy begin to have all the events Ted hoped they would have as a couple. And show that, while Barney & Robin loved each other, their hectic schedules and clashing personalities meant that they could never work; that love is not enough, and it requires both parties to put effort in.

Oh, what could have been...

46

u/crosbot Jul 21 '22

Even 3/4s! cut out a couple of the more filler episodes. A lot of what I loved about the show was the gang, their traditions, their inside jokes and history.

I wanted a glimpse of that, but with Tracey. She felt like she was group adjacent, just stuff like how she knew the naked man or got the puzzles name. I wanted her to have her own unique inside jokes, friendships and stories.

Maybe a scene where Ted is telling a classic story and he realizes he's including Tracey in one of them for the first time. There's so much scope here without overdoing it

21

u/thedon572 Jul 21 '22

Her own dopple ganger too!

7

u/crosbot Jul 21 '22

Great idea. I wonder what her profession would be and where they'd see her

6

u/FarrahKhan123 Jul 22 '22

They made Tracy so lovable. Even when she wasn't officially introduced, we still liked her and the kind of person she was. I think this is a credit to the actress as well, she stole the show whenever she came on screen. The Mother was literally what the show was centred around and her meeting Ted. I think through it all, the writers forgot what actually made the show and started the whole series.

1

u/spearman-steve Jul 21 '22

It could be argued that Robin barney and Ted didn't reset though. Like yes barney does that whole thing with wanting to be a player again but then promptly becomes a dad and wakes up, therefore not completely reseting his character. Robin and Ted ended up together so it's hard to say that they reset as much as they just finally got back together.

I do enjoy the ending OP posted better don't get me wrong. But I just also feel like people were unreasonably critical of the main ending. It could of been handled differently but it's not like it's season 8 of game of thrones levels of bad.

13

u/GanryuZT Jul 21 '22

I saw a deleted scene some years back of Robin wanting to go back with Ted, I think this is 1-2 years after Tracy died. But Ted at the time thought it was just a dinner between friends and just wanting to focus on raising his kids. That scene is canon to me.

11

u/nuhanala Jul 21 '22

Oh I always thought Tracy was still alive in that.

4

u/darthsavior Jul 23 '22

Yeah she’s still alive. Penny would have been ~10 y/o when Tracy passed. She was a lot younger when they ran into Robin.

37

u/crosbot Jul 21 '22

Spot on. I even liked the idea of Ted book-ending his search for love right back where it started. But as you say, in order to do that they had to butcher a fan loved couple and years of character progression.

Not only that, they did a disservice to the uniqueness of the characters. It's rare that we see couples in media that don't want the kids, the house etc. Here we had two fundamentally flawed, but awesome characters. We had a none-typical female character who wanted a successful career, she battled with the kid thing - but I'm glad the writers didn't cave. She met a person who shared the same values. It was refreshing to see a couple not driven by a desire for children, but to be fucking awesome.

12

u/Thefakeblonde Jul 21 '22

Honestly if the last scene was Ted at the bar and recreating that first Robin scene but with some new woman… that would be so good! But not Robin!!!

16

u/flutterfly28 Jul 21 '22

Barney and Robin’s relationship is terrible the entire time though. Every episode they show him violating her trust and then papering it over with a joke. They were never shown to be solid. And no Ted’s arc finally getting over Robin is not a waste - he did right away meet the mother and form an amazing relationship, get married, and have 2 kids!

12

u/Norillim Jul 21 '22

Exactly. I was recently watching some random season 8 and 9 episodes and each one had some hint about how terrible of a couple Barney and Robin were and how they weren't going to last. Even the long shot from Gary Blauman that in the recent AMA was said to be one of the creators favorites. It's got Robin calling in to Patrice's show to complain about Barney.

13

u/flutterfly28 Jul 21 '22

Yeah I’m rewatching now too - Barney is so manipulative throughout the proposal, the rehearsal dinner, and other times like when he randomly tells Robin he can’t go through with the wedding and she believes him. He’s straight up lying to her nonstop and she’s so distraught and on edge. I can’t believe any viewers really bought this as a good relationship. It just dragged on so long they assumed they were meant to.

2

u/DonZeriouS 14d ago

I didn't catch the "Robing calling in to Patrice's show" until your comment :D! Wow.

10

u/ElCidly Jul 21 '22

The climax of the show is him getting back together with Robin. The entire show is about him finally getting together with Robin. How is that not a waste?

Tracy is great, but she is treated as literally a baby factory so that Ted can have kids like he wants, and then finally be with the woman that he actually loves. The fact that they have Ted go back to Robin shows that he never actually grew and let her go.

2

u/android_impostor Jul 21 '22

I disagree. It showed that he did grow. It showed how much his life and his motivations and his entire character changed. It was just Robin he never grew out of

2

u/Starob Mar 09 '24

I didn't see it that way. Ted and Robin getting together to me felt more like an afterthought, an epilogue to the story, and I think that's how the writers intended it. The climax of the story was still how Ted met Tracy.

5

u/flutterfly28 Jul 21 '22

It’s annoying that your narrative has been adopted as truth in this forum. It’s a terrible narrative that betrays the entire show’s narration and probably hurts like hell for the creators and actors to read.

Baby-factory 🤮

Rewatch Ted’s 45 days speech and Vesuvius and realize how wrong you are, please.

17

u/ElCidly Jul 21 '22 edited Jul 21 '22

I’m not saying that Ted himself saw her that way, I’m saying that is what she was to the show. Ted’s whole arc is getting over Robin, so that he can settle down and be with the right woman for him. If Tracy still died, and Ted went off to find love again, then she wasn’t a baby factory, she was the love of his life, and now he had to learn to love again.

The fact that it was Robin, and that the whole show leads up to him getting with Robin, means that the mother was literally only introduced to the show as a way for him to have kids. That is the only purpose that she serves, a stepping stone so that Ted can be with the woman that he really loves all along.

Again I’m not saying this is how Ted would describe it, but it is the exact purpose that the character was introduced. I spent years rooting for Ted to finally get over Robin, because he could never be with the right woman until he did (Victoria was right). Season 9 is beautiful in that he finally lets Robin go, and only then is he ready to be with Tracy. Having him go back to Robin, who the show spent 9 seasons proving was not the right woman for him, was lazy, and disrespectful to both Ted’s arc, and Tracy’s character.

Also I hope it hurts the creators to read that, it hurt to watch it. 😂

4

u/ThisMojoSoDope Jul 21 '22

I will point out that in a deleted scene it does show Robin coming back and telling Ted that she's ready for him and he turns her down. I truly believe that Ted let Robin go. He didn't pursue her anymore, wasn't staying single and even said no he was happy with his life. All because Tracy was his one.

Just because literal years later he found his way back to her and tried again romantically doesn't shy away from the fact he let those feelings go and had the life he always dreamed of. But once Tracy had passed and he had time to grieve did he realize that he did care for her still. By this logic did Tracy love Ted less because her "one" had already passed away before meeting him? Not at all.

I do agree that having him get back with her just made the story more like "how I want to date aunt Robin" but that's just me. It's not the ending I would have gone for, maybe honestly Ted should have wound up with Victoria instead. Idk that's just the way I try to see it at least sorry for the ramble! Lol

1

u/FarrahKhan123 Jul 22 '22

how I want to date aunt Robin

They should have lead with this tbh 😭😭

6

u/cardmanimgur Jul 21 '22

Yea this is exactly right. The alternate ending is much better, but it doesn't undo the entire finale.

1

u/Icy-Sun1216 Jul 21 '22

My thoughts to a T!!

1

u/bookant Jul 21 '22

Yup. They need an alternate 9th season where they don't waste the whole thing on the wedding.

16

u/mkelley0309 Jul 21 '22

The show was always worried it was going to be cancelled, originally Victoria was the mother, then Stella was, etc and if the show was cancelled then the originally planned ending would have been fine. 2 horrible things happened to them. 1, the movie Definitely Maybe stole their ending and did it well, and 2, Ted outgrew Robin and the theme of the show transformed into Ted needing to let go of what he wanted in order to discover what he needed. They told that story, but they kept the ending that didn’t mesh with that thematic conclusion

4

u/crosbot Jul 21 '22

Sorry, what do you mean by the movie?

They kind of wrote themselves into a corner, right? They had the footage of the kids with a very specific ending. It would have been awful if we got no reaction from the kids. Then again they could've just slapped that "WHAT?!" reaction they love using and call it a day. Nice and tidy, job done.

9

u/mkelley0309 Jul 21 '22

I mean the movie titled Definitely Maybe with Ryan Reynolds, Abigail Breslin, Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher, and Rachel Weisz. In the movie, Reynolds is telling Breslin the story of how he met her mother (Banks) but it’s clear throughout that even though he had history with Banks and she was a good mom, Fisher was his soul mate. This movie had the benefit of the mother being the first girl and shows why they don’t work. When you make Tracy the last girl it makes it seem like she was the right match and hurts the ending they presented instead.

6

u/crosbot Jul 21 '22 edited Jul 21 '22

Oh my bad. I read it as the movie definitely, maybe stole it. Thanks for clarifying.

3

u/AldusPrime May 03 '23

I still think they could have reshot the ending with the kids being 9 years older.

In a show that was absurdly funny with unreliable narrators, they could have made a joke about how long it took to tell the story.

5

u/ze_shotstopper Jul 21 '22

I will die on the hill that if the events of the finale took place over at least half a season it would have been more accepted

84

u/Silent_Palpatine Jul 21 '22

I still like the original ending BUT I think that it should also end with Ted saying “and that kids is how I met your mother” and just dump all the getting back with Robin part that followed. It becomes bittersweet then almost as if Ted is putting off talking about Tracy to avoid reliving the heartbreak of her death as opposed to asking for his kids permission to bone their aunt again.

25

u/Jackie_Gan Jul 21 '22

The point is that he spends 9 seasons talking about Robin not their Mum though.

81

u/DankDanishMuffin Marshall👨‍⚖️ Jul 21 '22

I wish we has more of Cristin Milioti, her and Josh Radnor looked like they had so much genuine chemistry I would've loved to see more of their relationship blossom a bit but I was happy we at least got some of it

23

u/android_impostor Jul 21 '22

Absolutely. I understand why they did the ending the way they did, and I think it was beautifully done, but I could have watched an entire season of just those 2 being madly in love with each other. It's rare to see actors have that much chemistry together

15

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

She is so great. A nearly impossible task of living up to the woman Ted has been describing for 9 seasons and not making it annoying or overly fake and she nailed it.

2

u/AldusPrime May 03 '23

They were such a great couple and had so much more chemistry than Ted and Robin.

1

u/Radyschen May 26 '26

his real wife looks like her so that makes sense

12

u/KasiaJoanna Jul 21 '22

I would be okay with Ted and Robin but I just hate that they showed us that Robin and Barney are going to get married and for two years it was important plot. We even had one season based only on their mariage. Honestly I was bored at some point. And then in one of the last episodes they are telling me those two are getting a divroce?! By two short scenes!?

83

u/elephantsoo Jul 21 '22

This is my biggest pet peeve with fans of this show. What part of a man telling a story about an idealized mother and obsessing over his ex girlfriend, would possibly be about ANYTHING else. No way any wife would let him do that. No way he wouldn’t make at least one joke at her expense if she were alive. He is Ted after all. He is imparting the complicated history so they understand what this means to the two of them and just how forking complicated it is. Ugh. Anyways.

51

u/crosbot Jul 21 '22

Exactly. I have a different headcannon/fun theory on why it was so rushed. Ted is a man that likes to spin a yarn and lives in his stories. Basically the death of Tracey is still so painful to talk about, meaning that both for his kids and the viewers he rushed through it.

I don't think it's true, but I think it's fun.

10

u/elephantsoo Jul 21 '22

Lol yeah. I also think that happened because Tracy was never meant to be in the story. It was supposed to end at Barney and Robins wedding with meeting her and then cover it in that final episode way. And actually i like your thought and I do think it was too painful. It’s too painful for me anyways, I cry every time she is on screen. Only Ted could strive and try and be beat down only to find true perfect love and have her die. Like. Ugh.

Also let’s get real people aren’t actually that mad it was too rushed, they just mad he ended up with flawed Robin instead of perfect Tracy and Barney and Robin didn’t make it work lol. But also that makes me sad but ah well, couldn’t be both! Plus I think Barney really needed to have a kid to complete his character arc but yes. Sigh.

2

u/Jarush6898 Apr 07 '24

yeah you are right, but stillt the build up for barney and robin and how Barney went from being a perverted soziopath to being an honest and caring husband and than just throw it away in 3min really sucks. Just finished rewatching himym and every scene between robin and barney showing love for each other just felt empty as you already knew that there was literally no meaning. The idea of Ted against all odds breaking free of loving Robin and finding the perfect one just would have been the perfect ending. Of course this would have made the whole concept of why Ted even told his kids the story pointless and weird, but reseting the complete story of two of the main characters (robin and barney) to where it started just felt awful and kind of ruined a nearly perfect show. Don’t get me wrong, the ending wasn’t that bad but it just felt so not right and watching Barney relapse was one of the saddest things to watch. A man who changed so much became the worst version of himself again. And also Robin having feelings for Ted again just didn’t feel right as well, not because it did not make any sense, but because the idea of her loving Barney so much (I mean every time she had doubts about him he just proved them all wrong like in the penultimate episode where she said she wanted a man who is honest to her).

7

u/elephantsoo Jul 21 '22

On an unrelated note I JUST realized that I know this show so well I can actually recite the Korean words Barney says when he runs after Ted 😂

8

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

THANK YOU!!!!! I feel like I'm one of about 10 people that really like the last season because of all the stuff you said. I saw him ending up with Robin as soon as we found out about the bet marshall and lily had about them ending up together.

8

u/elephantsoo Jul 21 '22

Yeah amen — Marshall knows Ted the best. Also you’re not one of 10! It’s the most watched season and the finale is the most watched episode :)

10

u/Shmandon Jul 21 '22

I was only about to turn 14 when the show ended, I had basically grown up watching it with my parents every week. It's still the only time i've been emotional due to the sheer disappointment of a show's ending

43

u/Sufficient-Celery-19 Jul 21 '22

Apparently unpopular considering the comments but I like this ending hahaha although the mouths are off from the speaking hahah

23

u/realsies11 Jul 21 '22

Just make a post about how you liked the original ending. You’ll get a lot of comments about how it sucked.

I liked the original ending but I also kind wish this was the ending only because my theory for the ending (was watching since the beginning) was kind of like this. It didn’t have the whole back and forth under the umbrella thing but I thought he would walk up to her and say “Hi, I’m Ted” and she would say “I’m Tracy” and it would cut to him in the future saying “and that kids, is how I met your mother” end credits.

15

u/Sufficient-Celery-19 Jul 21 '22

I also watched from the beginning but I can’t recall how I thought it would end. I honestly only disliked the original ending because I loved Barney and Robin together and I hated how they built them up soo much just to end it so quick (I know everyone says this) but also Ted and Robin tried and failed too many times for me to even entertain them being together in the end so it was a shock hahaha

6

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

Should have had Bob Saget as future Ted as well.

6

u/JudgingYouSoHardRN Jul 21 '22

I wish this was the real ending. I just finished watching HIMYM for the first time ever and after binging it nonstop I cried for an hour at the ending. Heartbreaking :(

6

u/mikethamurse Jul 21 '22

Wtf that was so much better

32

u/fireredranger Jul 21 '22

The original ending pissed me off so much I literally couldn’t sleep the night it aired. I was that mad about it. I would have loved this ending so much more. The actual ending grew on me a little knowing what to expect, but I still don’t like it.

I wouldn’t have hated it so much if they didn’t spend so long showing us why Ted and Robin weren’t right for each other. They were really good friends who loved each other, but they weren’t a good romantic match, and not just because she didn’t want kids. There is absolutely no reason to expect that this time things will work out better for Ted and Robin.

I wasn’t just mad that Ted and Robin got together. I wasn’t a fan of that, but if that’s how they wanted to end it, there were so many better ways they could have done it. I would have preferred not killing off the mother and keeping her and Ted together, but if you know you’re going to do it, do more to set it up, rather than making it a bait and switch in the finale. If Ted and Robin were always going to be end game, then don’t show us repeatedly all the reasons they don’t work as a couple for 9 years. Don’t spend an entire season on Robin and Barney’s wedding only to undo it within 10 minutes of the finale. Take the time to actually show us why Ted and Robin will be different this time.

I wasn’t so upset with what they did (even if it wouldn’t have been my choice), so much as how they did it. If you liked it, that’s fine, but to me, it wasn’t well written and seemed like they were writing a twist for the sake of a twist.

10

u/BUZZZY14 Jul 21 '22

They spent all of season 9 explaining how Robin and Barney weren't working out. Mostly every episode Barney is doing something that Robin disapproves of.

The reason Ted and Robin never worked out was because Robin wanted to focus on her career and didn't want kids. Ted wanted to get married and have kids. Ted had his happy marriage with two kids and Robin had her successful career. When the mother dies, they rekindle their romance and now they both have what they wanted. There's nothing keeping them apart.

7

u/Aquariusgem Jul 21 '22

I'm still not buying it. Even if you put all that aside, him and Robin had no romantic chemistry, partially because it was one sided. Throughout a huge chunk of the series it was like "come on Ted she's just not that into you" I mean she even faked an orgasm with him. You're telling me those factors were the only thing keeping her from returning feelings?

1

u/karmaextract Marshall👨‍⚖️ Nov 09 '25

Most happy marriages involves lots of fake orgasms. That's not as strong a point as you think it is.

There's also confirmation bias on your part there because they spend equal amounts showing Robin actually loves Ted too, multiple times, but she's more pragmatic about it. And i'm not talking about her emotionally vulnerable state about the time capsule from Season 9 but throughout the whole series.

1

u/davensdad Jul 21 '22

They werent right for each other at first, but became so when they reached their 50s

5

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

Do people really date that many people before settling ???Or it is just TED !!

3

u/TbartyB Jul 21 '22

Nah some really do and more xD

5

u/TheEyeofNapoleon Jul 21 '22

I liked the original ending…

4

u/samjp910 Jul 21 '22

My favorite part of the ending is Marshall basically deciding ‘I’m not telling these kids anything. It was all just for us.’

3

u/thestargazed Jul 21 '22

Yes, it should have ended like this. Why they didn’t is beyond me.

4

u/jeeblesss Ted🏢 Jul 21 '22

RIP Bob Saget.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

Would only add a post-credit "front porch" scene to this, I think. Maybe that's how they could've used the now-too-old kids, even - have them show up with their spouses and grandkids while everyone is playing cards on the front porch?

13

u/bangitybangbabang Jul 21 '22

This is certainly the ending I prefer

7

u/BarryPepperfan Jul 21 '22

Yes, yes! A thousand times, yes!

36

u/societalmenace1 Jul 21 '22

i liked the normal ending

11

u/strickzilla pulling them off Jul 21 '22

i wouldnt say i liked it but i appreciated the original ending, it was real. it was sad, painful, melancholy it wasnt very "romcomy". my only complaint would have been more tracy. but then again its called how i MET your mother not how i dated your mother

3

u/societalmenace1 Jul 21 '22

I would enjoy more Tracy but having binged the whole show I was fine to happy with the ending. Maybe if i watched it once a week for however many days I’d have more of an issue with it

1

u/strickzilla pulling them off Jul 21 '22

yeah i do recall being very put out the night i saw it, and since then ive gained some perspective and i appreciate it more

The very very end (credits roll with the cast as they were in first season, the song playing “remember remember, what we fight for”) definitely had a bigger emotional impact and nostalgia hit than this one. Shed a tear or two knowing it was really over

u/the_timps 🤠Sandy Rivers Jul 21 '22

Yeah OP thinks they're speaking for everyone.
I loved it.
It ended how it ended.

I wish we had more than the 15 minute "By the way here's how the 10 years from there played out". But it makes sense that everything rushed after Ted met Tracey. The show was about how he met her. They couldn't drag on for 2 episodes after the iconic line.

1

u/strickzilla pulling them off Jul 21 '22

yeah this! if they would have cut done the wedding to maybe 10-15 episodes and really let the courtship up until her diagnosis play out.

No

No it’s just a really bad opinion you had

3

u/societalmenace1 Jul 21 '22

i think it’s a pretty good opinion

1

Please don't say "We all would have..."

More of us like the REAL ending than you think.

3

u/PouluCBagumba Jul 21 '22 edited Jul 21 '22

YOU would have preferred it. It sucked. That's why it's only the alternative. It's only good to sell more DVDs.

3

u/thatoneguyr Jul 21 '22

This hits the feels so hard.

3

u/Seekandinspire Jul 22 '22

I’m not crying you’re crying!

1

u/charmer24 Jul 22 '22

I won't deny that

6

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

Hey, the ending we got wasn't great, but at least it wasn't Game of Thrones bad.

5

u/EdziePro Jul 21 '22

is this OFFICIAL official? Like from the creators n shit? And is it recent?

5

u/jeeblesss Ted🏢 Jul 21 '22

Yes, either ending is canon depending on which one you personally prefer. They came back to film the alternate ending months later, this was also the last time Carter Bays worked with Bob Saget.

15

u/flutterfly28 Jul 21 '22

Nope, they got the ending right. They just screwed up setting expectations for viewers by dragging out the last few seasons.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

TIL people like the original ending

5

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

The biggest disappointment of the final episode isn't even the Mother's death, it's how they divorced Robin and Barney the episode after they got married and did it in such an underwhelming way.

HIMYM nailed nearly all of the big moments in the show. Even the original ending, despite not being what most people wanted was still well executed for what it is.

I prefer the original ending because at least there is a purpose to Barney and Robins divorce.

2

u/BrendanFraserFan0 Brendan Jul 21 '22

Amazing! Reminded me of my edit finale.

2

u/saintbrg Jul 21 '22

So much stuff in the show wouldn’t make sense if this was the ending

2

u/lDucksauce Jul 21 '22

I’m pretty ok with the normal ending it’s sad but beautiful , but this edit is very well done at 99% the music a the end MUST be Heaven by The Walkmen, every time I hear this song at the end of the show I melt in tears

2

u/MrsMcBasketball Come again for Big Fudge Jul 21 '22

Omg!!! Why have I never heard or seen this! It was sooo good!

Why didn't they go with this so much better

2

Perfect ending ❤️

2

u/FarrahKhan123 Jul 22 '22

This was perfect ;-;

2

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '22

The last 2 episodes were God Awful and honestly detracted from what could have been the perfect wrap up.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '24

A billion Billion times better than the ending given to us

11

u/rjsheine Jul 21 '22

Oh man that would have been such a satisfying ending

6

u/4_Legged_Duck Jul 21 '22

I love the original ending.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

I prefer the official original ending. It’s the best ending there could be.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

Still prefer the real ending, the original, the intended ending. My only complaint in the show is that 9th season was paced in the most fucked way. They could have made the wedding weekend faster, then spent more time one the stuff in the ending. Like an episode around each if the major events. I want to know more about Judge Fudge and Batman!

4

u/JMisGeography Jul 21 '22

Please keep your pitchforks to yourselves but I love the original ending. I think the pacing is perfect for the frame story: Ted wasn't telling the kids the story of how he met their mother, he was telling them about Robin whom he's still loves. We hardly got any Tracy because they know that part and she was never really the point.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

No, "we" don't all prefer this one.

4

u/zahi4a Jul 21 '22

Naah I prefer the original

3

u/No-Chemistry-1473 Jul 21 '22

I loved the ending. Fight me.

3

u/How_Bout_Em Jul 21 '22

The original is way better

3

u/Radeondrrrf Jul 21 '22

I liked the original ending but hated the execution of it. They dragged introducing Tracy to the audience and then dragged Ted and Tracy meeting in the final season. Plus the final season takes place during 3 days and away from the bar and apartment just felt weird.

2

u/SS-445 Jul 21 '22

Although the ending felt somewhat rushed for the show as a whole, I think it fit perfectly from Ted’s perspective.

The whole point of Ted’s arc was that he was a hopeless romantic, who didnt give up on his passions in life. Just like he kept working to achieve his dream of designing a building in New York City’s skyline, he wasnt going to give up on his aspirations in his love life.

While most hopeless romantics like Ted think they are just looking for the perfect partner to have a relationship with, love doesnt always work in a way that makes you capable of shutting down your feelings in favor of the ideal match, and Ted couldnt really shut down what he felt for Robin from the moment he met her. His quest for love throughout the series wasn’t really for that perfect partner; it was more to find someone that can best make him forget she wasn’t Robin.

A lot of people didn’t like the ending because they wanted Ted to grow out of it and realize Robin wasn’t actually right for him. However, for a dreamer like Ted, no matter how much the circumstances changed, how great he and Tracy were together, and how hard he tried to convince himself and everyone else otherwise, it was always Robin, from the moment he first saw her.

So all in all, I dont think the show could have had a different ending, but it could have had a different buiild up in terms of pacing perhaps.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22 edited Jul 21 '22

Yeah let's have a fairy tale ending that doesn't match the rest of the show.

1

u/mtietz007 Mar 11 '25

This is good. But there is an even better one out there somewhere. It the internet the day after the official final episode - but it was quickly scrubbed by the HIMYM producers. I wish I could find that one.

1

u/Faustikins Mar 16 '25

My biggest gripe is that I don't like Robin and think Ted deserved better.

1

u/Ok_Tune2277 Jul 27 '25

I have to weigh in i have some thoughts that i want out there to see what people think as a lot of people have said similar things but never exactly this. I think everyone is forgetting that in the pilot Ted looks over at Robin and says thats how i met your aunt robin he starts the story of how he met the mother by telling how he met Robin clearly the guy had other motives to the story he wanted them to know how important aunt Robin was in his life and that even tho he loved the mother he also really loved aunt Robin. As soon as i saw the scene in the pilot with Ted and Robin sharing that look i knew ok she is the main girl of the story.

Throughout the story tho things developed in ways which contridicted what i thought (Robin not wanting to have kids and Dating/ Marrying Barney) but even then it was clear to me that she was more than just a friend to Ted and that is evident when he finally lets her go during her wedding and then and then only is when he meets the woman of his dreams a women he loves just as much as Robin (Yes he loves them both equally and in the exact same way). This shows that the universe never let Ted meet Tracy up until then because he wasnt ready for her because he still had lingering feelings for Robin which he let go during her wedding (And that doesnt mean that those feelings are gone just that he choose to leave them in the past)

Even tho the mother is completely different from Robin and is the perfect match for Ted in every single way doesnt mean that she is the only one for him. There are more than 1 "The One" for people like in Ted's case Victoria was also the One but the timing and situations or stars if some people prefer didnt align for those two. So Ted had 3 The One's in the show (And No Stella although great was never the one she lives in NEW JERSEY for pete's sake).

In my honest opinion i think the best ending while still keeping the mother alive for a while enough to make it make sense is this: stick to the Alternate version all the way until the end when the end credits end with the yellow umbrella flying away in the street (symbolising the passing of the Mother) and then have a like sort of post credit scene with the kids reacting and the daughter making the remark that he wants to date robin and that mom has passed for a while (which also shows how long she was in his life for making room for alot of memories with her instead of just a collage like in the original ending) and then have it end with him at Robin's apartment with the blue french horn which is a perfect bookend because that is where shit goes down in the pilot. This way the show truly is about How he met the mother but the Post Cerdits delve into why he was telling the story in the first place.

Hope my long ass explaination stirs up debate i would love to see people thought on this.

I will for myself at least make this edit soon just trying to find a higher quality version of the Alternative ending because i want the deleted and extended scenes it has. If any one has a 1080p high quality version of the Alternative ending pls let me know.

u/TopClearanceMember Feb 25 '26

I can't believe the network execs didn't demand this ending. the show was a sitcom not a drama ^ that ^ is a proper sitcom ending and is an ending that is respectful to the fans.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

Not all, I am big fan of the original ending it was hard to watch this for me. But I agree 9th could’ve been executed in a better way.

0

u/shutyourgob16 Jul 21 '22

this show was so corny. It has really low rewatch value. This ending makes no sense because as a whole it's just convoluted and random and they're trying to force a connection between storylines that were just meandering around forever.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

But it is the actual ending

1

u/lallenlowe Jul 21 '22

The original ending has really grown on me after all these years.

1

u/fivesevendead Jul 21 '22

Let us not forget the deleted scene that explains the pineapple incident

1

u/SpooneyToe11240 Jul 21 '22

I actually like the original ending

1

u/FormalAlternative806 Jul 21 '22

I respect others opinions, but it’s interesting, how my real life friends never really hates the ending like you guys.

I know the execution was poor, but I didn’t hate the outcome, that’s why the alternate ending isn’t really for me.

1

u/Seizure_Salad_ Jul 21 '22

I liked the original when it aired. I understand why some don’t like it but the original is my favorite.

1

u/Brewmaster30 Jul 21 '22

If only they had Danny Devito

1

u/MaximusJCat Jul 21 '22

I wish they would put the higher resolution version back up. The version on YouTube is pretty crappy quality

1

u/alikashita Jul 22 '22

Meh this one kind of feels anticlimactic

1

u/digitalXplora Jul 22 '22

15 minutes ago I finished watching this episode for the first time. I'm 33 and after all this time I still had no idea how this series turned out and made it through all the episodes. I really don't know what to think 😅

1

u/mmohtasham Jul 22 '22

Ted's favorite book is "ls Love in the Time of Cholera" which is about a couple of young lovers who are split apart and after many years they get back together when they are very, very old. This was intentional. He was always meant to be with Robin in the end.

1

u/kennalikescatss Aug 23 '22

I think Robin was the true villain in the end. Barney would never have wanted to get a divorce if she wasn’t constantly traveling and never taking him seriously.

1

u/Pleasant-Studio2100 Dec 23 '22

Best show on Earth!
