Millions of Americans are getting a raise from Social Security next year. But the bigger story may be what happens a few years later, when the program’s main trust fund is projected to run dry.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 on Oct. 14, raising monthly payments as the program faces a long-term funding shortfall that could trigger automatic benefit cuts in the early 2030s.
The increase comes as the program faces mounting financial pressure. According to the 2026 Social Security trustees report, the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund, which pays retirement and survivors benefits, is projected to run out of reserves in the fourth quarter of 2032.
At that point, incoming revenue would cover an estimated 78% of scheduled benefits—effectively a 22% cut—with that share projected to decline to 62% by 2100 if lawmakers don’t change the program’s financing.
The combined Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASDI) trust funds are projected to be depleted in the third quarter of 2034. At that point, incoming revenue would cover 83% of scheduled benefits, a share projected to decline to 65% by 2100.
Trust fund depletion would not mean Social Security stops collecting payroll taxes or paying benefits. Instead, without additional revenue or legislative changes, the program would only be able to pay the share of scheduled benefits that its incoming revenue covers. Budget watchdogs have warned that the program is on a “collision course toward insolvency.”

Russia’s central bank has reduced its gold holdings by about 62 tonnes so far this year, its largest sustained gold sell-off since the country’s 1998 financial crisis.
The bank’s gold holdings have fallen every month in 2026, according to data released on Tuesday. They fell by about 6 tonnes in September to roughly 2,264 tonnes.

These people have lost their damn minds. McDonald's is having trouble selling hamburgers at $10 and they are not alone. Darden Group (Olive Garden, etc), Taco Bell etc. all having trouble. And people really think people have all this money to buy Starlink and AI products?
What these people are wishing for is hyperinflation. They are sick in the head if these valuations turn out.
I was watching CNBC this morning and one guy said it should be valued at $100T. Do these people not realize if that happens the money is worthless and there's no profit to be had at that point?

I am tired of people saying ignorant people who would rather take a vacation are not saving for retirement.
After rent, utilities and health insurance I have $79 per month for groceries. I keep 375$ in an emergency fund I never touch -and believe me I would live to buy a latte just once with some of that savings.
I am sick of being called lazy or Stupid. I work 3 jobs and don’t qualify for free anything.
Please quit judging me and others in my shoes if you have never lived in them.
