Dune (novel) Is Paul really right that the jihad is inevitable?

We tend to think of Paul as a reliable narrator, at least early on, and to accept his claim that after the duel with Jamis the jihad becomes inevitable. But it occurred to me that by the end of the first book, Paul has all the knowledge and tools he needs to stop the interstellar jihad: he can destroy the spice. And without spice, there's no logistics capable of sustaining a jihad.

I'd like to discuss this idea.

All Books Spoilers The length of Leto II's life and reign

As people talk about Leto II the golden path and both how he viewed the universe and how he was viewed by it, it needs to keep in mind that he lived and ruled for roughly 3500 years. In our terms this is the bronze age in Greece to the present

From his perspective think about the meaning of spending that much time shaping everything while knowing the narrow path that needs to be adhered to in order to bring about the desired result at the same time as living the agony that is his existence

From the standpoint of people living maybe 100 years think of the generations. Muadib and the empire are 1k years into his reign simply a matter of legend. Looking ahead there are still 2k years to go and you have no idea if/when it will end. Leto II of course is omnipresent. He may not be a god in the sense that we think of a god but he has been there in legendary times and he seemingly will be there forever. His control of so much is seemingly absolute so what else could he be but a god

Maybe others can visualize this length of time easily and how that shapes him the people in his universe and the universe but whenever I step back and consider it the scope of Leto II is hard to fathom

General Discussion Question about Technology

I don't know much about Dune deep lore but correct me If I'm wrong but individuals in the Dune universe don't use AI and fight close combat because quick laser guns/artillery causes big explosion when they come into contact with shields, right? My question is why are there so many ships/crafts with heavy artillery weapons shooting everywhere and what's stopping individual fighters from using similar type weapons during combat. Is this just a "rule of cool" type situation.

Dune: Part Two (2024) Paul's prescience and how he predicts human behaviour vs natural phenomena

Movie watcher here but have read how the story goes and how some things work (I don't mind spoilers). So my understanding is that Paul's prescience is no hocus pocus magic thing. It's basically science, him having a vast database of both his male and female ancestors plus his mentat training and so he is capable of predicting/calculating how an individual human will act. I get how that could work.

What eludes me, is how can see what natural phenomena will happen. For example before the battle against the emperor on Arrakis he foresaw a "great-grandmother of a storm". How is he able to do that?

General Discussion Leto II & traditional theism

A thing I fail to wrap my head around, the rationale for loving Leto is the same rationale for following God(In my opinion): that an omniscient being with all knowledge knows what's best and can decide what's good for us, so we should trust them even if our critical thinking can't comprehend what they're doing. Because of their knowledge of what will ultimately be good, that gives them authority to commit not-so-moral things in the short term. To ensure that the greater good happens, they must make horrific choices in the short term, Leto with his stagnant dictatorship & the biblical God with the slaughter of Canaanites, and newborn dying from Leukemia, and whatnot. Shouldn't all religious people who read Dune view Leto in a favorable light?

(Please note I'm not trying to disrespect your faiths in any way, I'm just trying to understand how faith in a higher deity influences your reading of the character of Leto)

General Discussion No screening in Odeon Leicester Square London

Tickets dropped today, but there is no release in Odeon's best screen in London (screen 1) in London Leicester Square. I saw both Dune 1 and 2 there and the experience is sublime. The movie is available in the Greenwich one and also in Leicester but not in Imax format? Any idea why ?

General Discussion Gift idea for Dune fan?

ETA: thank you all for the suggestions! They gave me a lot of ideas to add to his wishlist, and I think for the anniversary specifically I'm going to get him the Starforged Crysknife. I really apprecate y'all and your kind responses!

My husband is a HUGE Dune fan. I have tried to read the book a few times over the years (I am a pretty voracious reader), but I wasn't able to (thanks, aphantasia). I've watched the first movie, so I am familiar with the storyline.

This year is our 15th wedding anniversary, which is "crystal" as the traditional gift. I thought maybe a Crysknife replica would be a good gift for him. I found this on Etsy, but I didn't know if it was good or not. I was thinking of going with Option H, but I didn't know if the scabbard was worth it or not.

My other option is eBay, but there are SO many options on there, and I haven't been able to figure out what would be "cool" and what would just be a waste of money and a disappointment. I'm trying to stick in the $100-$200 range.

For reference, some gifts I have given him in the past that he has loved are: the Dune LEGO set of the Ornithopter (which is displayed on his office wall), and a paperback copy of the Dune Encyclopedia.

Thank you all for your help!

I was asked to quill something from Dune for a super fan. When I think dune the Sandworm is always my first thought. Paul and the Sandworm were brought to life with only strips of paper varying from 3-7 mm in way. Each strip is shaped and glued until all the pieces come together. This project truly took on a life of its own. Now to decide what universe to try next…

Children of Dune Thoughts on the books.

Just making conversation here, since I don’t actually know anyone in real life who is into these books, but I’m really enjoying Children of Dune.
When I finished Dune I got really sad, since all I could find online was how the series went downhill from there.
But I’ve read Dune Messiah and, when I got used to the differences on pacing and setting, it really felt like a superior book, or more mature, to be precise.
Now, Children of Dune was trickier: it took more than a hundred pages to get my attention. I really didn’t care for the twins and was already done with Alia and Duncan.
But man, how it gets better. Farad’n is a very nice character, Jessica is way more interesting here and even the twins start to grow on you.
Now that I’m finishing it I’m worried again, since people say that the second trilogy is trash.
Can I expect more interesting stories in the last books?

Children of Dune Why wasn’t Shaddam IV sent to Tupile along with the other defeated great houses?

Starting Children of Dune and I cant see a reason for Paul to leave his biggest threat and his heirs on their planet that is known for training some of the best warriors ever seen, allowing them to grow support. I also remember a discussion in messiah where the Sardaukar were practising warfare tactics so you’d think that would be the final straw for Paul or Alia when she took the throne.
Was it purely plot armour so that there is more of a story in this book or was there something I’m missing?

Chapterhouse: Dune Question about Sheeana and Duncan Idaho’s Relationship Spoiler

so, when talking about Sheeana’s sexual exploits Herbert wrote: sheeana knew her own sexual behavior, outrageous even by bene gesserit standards, was a form of protest against this the missionaria tried to impose on her. The excuse that she only polished the males trained in sexual bondage by Duncan Idaho was just that… An excuse.

Herbert has been pretty into stressing that Duncan is very heterosexual and shocked by homosexuality. Even though it often wraps back around a homoerotic in a very spartan way… all this to say am I correct to read this that she is having Duncan teach other men how to be tied up sexually, etc.? Is there some other bizarre meaning that Frank Herbert meant?

updates: I definitely read this slightly more literally, and I think the people here are very correct in that it’s referring to the various Sex Powers™️ and imprinting that can be done.

Dune Messiah Dune Messiah and its parallel to India's religious politics

So today, while reading Dune Messiah, this particular conversation between Paul and Edric captivated me.

Some quotes as follows -

- “What religion and self-interest cannot hide, governments can,”

-“And rulers are notoriously cynical where religions are concerned. Religion, too, is a weapon. What manner of weapon is religion when it becomes the government?”

And later in the conversation, Scytale said this - “Some say, that people cling to Imperial leadership because space is infinite. They feel lonely without a unifying symbol. For a lonely people, the Emperor is a definite place. They can turn toward him and say: ‘See, there He is. He makes us one.’ Perhaps religion serves the same purpose, m’Lord.”

Now as an Indian, I could immediately draw parallels between these passages and the country's current political state and the rise of religious fanaticism. Now, of course, many of you might have contrasting opinions on this, considering your political ideology. However, one thing we may indeed agree upon that Frank Herbert was quite a visionary. What are your thoughts on this?
