Video This is the largest single-building pig farm in the world. At 26 storeys high, it can slaughter 1.2 million pigs per year. It was built in Ezhou, China, to help the country's exploding demand for pork. Pork is China's most popular meat, with the country consuming nearly half of global pork demand.

Feel bad for laughing šŸ˜…šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

219

u/bob_in_the_west Sep 08 '26

Is it? This is just multiple farms stacked on top of each other. The animals aren't treated any better on a lot of big single story farms.

222

u/Saikotsu Sep 08 '26

That doesn't make it less fucked up, it makes it more so.

96

u/Decloudo Sep 08 '26

This exists cause people want meat.

84

u/ToddHowardTouchedMe Sep 08 '26

exactly. I'm not a vegan but there really is no argument against Veganism.

20

u/Decloudo Sep 08 '26

Whats yours for not being one then?

111

u/ToddHowardTouchedMe Sep 08 '26

I don't have an argument for not being one. I am 100% in the wrong for my dietary choices. I won't make excuses for it. You can call me a hypocrit or whatever but it still won't change the fact that Veganism is objectively the moral thing to be dietary wise.

21

u/DecantsForAll Sep 08 '26

I respect this.

7

u/jackster31415 Sep 09 '26

You can reduce your consumption too. I’d love the world to go vegan, but if you feel you can’t or simply won’t, you can still try to at least reduce it

0

u/Decloudo Sep 08 '26

Oh no, insults and blaming dont help anyone.

But thats the thing I dont get:

If you dont have any argument for it, then why do you do it?

Why do you still make that choice?

3

u/paullx Sep 08 '26

Argument does exist, it is just not a good one, and very selfish, very human.

10

u/CareRarely Sep 08 '26

Because it's so normalized that even though we know it's wrong we don't feel any guilt. Kinda fucked up. It's hard to make a massive lifestyle choice when you feel absolutely no need to do so.

3

u/Decloudo Sep 09 '26

I would feel plenty of guilt, why would what others do have any effect on MY actions?

"But others do it too!" Really, that is the argument?

7

u/Heavy_Ingenuity1371 Sep 08 '26

Because we are humans and we are rarely perfectly moral

2

u/Decloudo Sep 09 '26

Thats a decision.

Its not some random stuff happening to you, its you intently doing something.

This isnt about moral, its abot accepting the science, the factual reality of the consequences of our behaviour.

6

u/Decloudo Sep 09 '26

I would not ask if I did.

Plenty of people think its tasty and still stopped consuming.

Including me.

So the answer is: "I care more abut taste then about the negative effects, cause they dont hit me immediately, the taste does though!"

Am I getting this right?

Why are you kicking the goal posts and now talking about arguments for it?

You can eat meat that is from an animal that is treated well. There are plenty of farms that have livestock integrated into a healthy functioning ecosystem. The video isn't of a farm it's a pig factory. I respect vegans even though I am a cattle farmer.

9

u/KingKongIsFakeNews Sep 09 '26

99% of farmed animals in the US are factory farmed…..

2

u/treeman71 Sep 09 '26

I'm advocating for folks to purchase meat from responsible farms, if they chose to continue eating meat. There are so many small family run farms to choose from across the country, many of which offer shipping.

→ More replies

1

u/pigpill Sep 11 '26

So advocate more people to make the 1% into 2%. Factory farming is horrendous, but arguing against the people trying to do it humane is not the right way to go. Those are the people that also care about animals and will give you the time of day. BigAg will just roll over you in their big boy toys and lick their cash while they abuse animals.

0

u/imnotabot303 Sep 09 '26

There's no morals involved really. Humans evolved to eat meat, there's nothing immoral about that part.

What most people are concerned about is how much meat is being eaten and how those animals are raised and treated.

The people that eat a lot of meat for their own personal pleasure are the people that drive situations like this.

It also doesn't help that vegetarian and vegan food is often far more expensive than meat but again that's because not enough people eat it.

2

u/Indigo-Saint-Jude Sep 10 '26

There's no morals involved really. Humans evolved

uhhh we evolved a lot of behavior that is both immoral and illegal...😬

2

u/imnotabot303 Sep 10 '26

Morals are created by us. As much as some people would like to believe, we were not handed down a list of moral and immoral rules to follow.

Most people just have compassion for other living things. There's nothing immoral about eating animals, it's how life works on earth and will be the same on every planet in the universe with life. Without it there's no natural balance.

However treating animals badly and essentially turning them into manufactured products is not the same as eating them.

If everyone ate less meat animals could have a higher quality of life before being eaten.

Plus if a person is someone that could not kill an animal for food themself then they shouldn't be eating them. People have become so separated from the act that they often don't even see meat in supermarkets as animals anymore.

6

u/MonthlyWeekend_ Sep 08 '26

There’s no argument against veganism. Why would that necessitate being one?

……

1

u/pigpill Sep 11 '26

Because vegans have to announce themselves and try to argue with people who are trying to do humane farming. Even though they know that big farms are the problem. But they dont get replies from them on reddit so they have to try to be smug.

3

u/secret_tunnelz Sep 09 '26

I have watched hundreds of videos and comments of people trying to argue against veganism and have not found one good reason to argue against it. Thank you for admitting this, it's funny some of the points people try to make to justify meat eating.

1

u/pigpill Sep 11 '26

You should really try to step out of that echo chamber... its not good for your mental health

2

u/Uncle00Buck Sep 09 '26

Other than we evolved eating nutrient-dense meat.

1

u/ToddHowardTouchedMe Sep 10 '26

everything you can get from meat can be obtained without eating meat.

1

u/Uncle00Buck Sep 10 '26

Or, you could eat meat. When a tiger kills to eat, is it unethical? How are humans different? We can treat slaughter animals better and consumers should be given that choice, as I believe many would. But I strongly support hunting, fishing and open range ranching, to name a few. Can you judge whether it was better for those deer, elk, salmon and beef that were killed for food to not have lived at all?

1

u/ToddHowardTouchedMe Sep 11 '26

we are smart enough to know right from wrong and understand the pain inflicted upon animals. hope this helps.

2

u/Uncle00Buck Sep 11 '26

You cannot acknowledge that humans would not exist were it not for meat? This isn't fluid morality based on choices made possuble by prosperity, it's objective science. You can criticize conditions and a population that has created enormous demand, but our teeth's structure is undeniable. We are omnivores, not herbivores. You're free to make a choice, just don't make it for others.

1

u/pigpill Sep 11 '26

So you do support ethical farming, since it is a massive reduction in pain on animals?

→ More replies

1

u/DecantsForAll Sep 08 '26

One dude made an argument in favor of eating wild kangaroo meat that was pretty compelling. Basically, it doesn't destroy natural ecosystems that sustain lots of animal life and it also doesn't kill any rodents, whereas vegetable/grain farms do both.

You could probably extend that argument to sustainable fish and shellfish.

1

u/pigpill Sep 11 '26

You can extend the argument to many things if hunting/farming was ethical vs poor living condition industrial farming.

1

u/Defendant1597 Sep 09 '26

Or rather because they want too much meat. And sprinkle some capitalism on top. If everyone ate a steak just once a week (idk didn't calculate) we could probably have them all outside, living an ok to decent life.

Single story farms: also fucked.

0

u/Sensitive-Plate-684 Sep 08 '26

It's the biggest-torture-tower-in-all-of-history part that does it for me.

13

u/bob_in_the_west Sep 08 '26

Again: These animals are not treated any worse than on farms that have a single story. And I'm not even talking about China. The US isn't any better. The EU isn't either.

1

u/Defendant1597 Sep 09 '26

But how does that make it not fucked up? How do you know they wouldn't say the same thing about farms in the US or EU?

But also it isn't just about the amount of suffering but the dystopian nature of this building that makes it feel fucked up. Fuck all mass animal farms though.

1

u/bob_in_the_west Sep 09 '26

I never said that it is less fucked up or more. It's just the same for the pork you eat yourself.

1

u/Defendant1597 Sep 09 '26

The person you replied to said it's fucked up. And you asked "is it?" That's what I meant.

1

u/bob_in_the_west Sep 09 '26

I did ask that because I've got this feeling that most people think their cheap pork products come from happy animals living on a small farm with lots of time outside.

Yes, I could have worded it better. What I wanted to say with that question is that it's not any more fucked up than what all other countries do.

1

u/Defendant1597 Sep 11 '26

It's not if we were to measure and compare suffering. But it is in a sense more dystopian. Don't you see that?

You could probably compare the holocaust to other events in history and come to the conclusion that people elsewhere suffered just as much, pain wise maybe even more. But there is something about the cold inhumanity of systematically killing a group of people. Factory killing as many as possible in a short time as possible. In that way this building puts another layer of efficiency in the mass killing factory. Each layer of efficiency feels less respectful and less humane. It's just emotions. And it looks very dystopian to me. You know what I mean?

1

u/Ok-Butterscotch-6955 Sep 08 '26

Wouldn’t the issue be the per-pig torture value not the gross torture value, if torture could be quantified

0

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 Sep 08 '26

this has a higher torture density than single floor farms, which means this building is drukhari approved

0

u/TN_man Sep 08 '26

Yeah it seems worse to not have them ever experience outside.

I can’t tell you how many other guys, both online and in-person, become offended by my lifestyle. Their entire personality (masculinity) is validated on how much other people are annoyed and irritated by their own existence (but it’s clearly a one-way street).

7

And i don't mean that in a jabbing sense, i'm genuinely curious.

-1

u/Muted_Buy8386 Sep 08 '26

Humans. There are no rules. No end game. No gods. Or devils. Nothing matters at all in the long run. Were you under the impression someone was keeping score?

So take what you can, do what you can get away with, exploit what you feel like, and die. Have a great big fucking family, and keep them before anyone else. Easy.

3

u/Complete-Housing-720 Sep 08 '26

So essentially what you're saying is Evil is an inherent human trait and we need to make peace with that?

3

u/Borkato Sep 08 '26

How does your ethical framework handle things like mass murderers and rapists who are just exploiting what they feel like?

1

u/Muted_Buy8386 Sep 09 '26

I feel they're going to end up in the exact same place as the nicest person you know. And in ten thousand years none of it will matter at all, unless theyre a really impressive mass murderer.

u/Defendant1597 Sep 09 '26 edited Sep 09 '26

I mean we have compassion and empathy. And we prefer living in harmony over killing each other.

Most people do feel compassion for other living creatures. The closer they are to us the better most people can imagine their suffering and usually would prefer to avoid that. I'm not saying it's some universal ethics or whatever, but our biology to some extent dictates our emotions and through that our morals and ethics.

You sound like you lack that, and then there really Isn't anything to argue about with you. But I find this nihilistic view extremely unpleasant.

2

u/Muted_Buy8386 Sep 09 '26

"And we prefer living in harmony over killing each other."

Do we?

Why do we need laws and enforcement then?

"Most peopleĀ doĀ feel compassion for other living creatures"

Conditionally. You can love dogs. Never hurt them. But one bites on your kid's face, suddenly that line becomes a lil more mutable, yea?

"our biology to some extent dictates our emotions and through that our morals and ethics."

So humans can't be conditioned to be killers? I think this is a terrible premise.

"I find this nihilistic view extremely unpleasant."

Why is that? Were you under the impression that your individual existence mattered? Or is it just uncomfortable to think that you will end up with the same reward for your life that Putin or Hitler or Stalin or Gacy got?

→ More replies

1

u/pigpill Sep 11 '26

If you are pulling the biology card its way more in the favor of meat than non-meat.

You also sound like you dont have the empathy to think of the people who grew up feeding themselves from their farm or hunting.

Stop trying to be so sanctimonious (see I have a lexicon as well), and ignore the trolls. That dude is just asking you to do it.

9

u/Borkato Sep 08 '26

Why?

6

u/DecantsForAll Sep 08 '26

Because they're too fragile to admit what they're doing is morally wrong so they have to double down on doing it as some sort of defense mechanism.

1

u/pigpill Sep 11 '26

Horrible conditions = morally wrong
Good conditions = morally right

I think we can all agree that if an animal is going to die (in before 'no animal has to die') we all here would like it to be treated with thoughtfulness and care.

1

u/Short-Paramedic-9740 Sep 09 '26

You decide what's moral?

-13

u/Muted_Buy8386 Sep 08 '26

Because I enjoy eating meat.

Plants taste largely like leafy-asshole, unless they're seasoned into oblivion. I don't like what I perceive to taste as asshole. Maybe that's different for vegans.

I also loathe mock products. If your cuisine is worth anything, it doesn't need to make knockoffs of worthwhile products.

4

u/house343 Sep 08 '26

"plants taste bad unless you use other plants to make them taste good" do you even hear yourself?

-3

u/Muted_Buy8386 Sep 08 '26

But no one is just eating fucking oregano, are they? That's what invalids do.

You need to work far harder to make plants palatable than you do meat.

11

u/Borkato Sep 08 '26

If you think drinking things like straight up estrogen and pus in cow’s milk tastes better than a product like oat milk made from plants, or that ground animal flesh is better than mock meat, that’s your prerogative. But how much pleasure you get from something isn’t a justification for the harm you cause, otherwise we’d be raping everyone we felt like because it feels good to us to penetrate, after all.

Edit: not to mention the idea that raw animal flesh tastes good is fucking hilariously wrong

-3

u/Muted_Buy8386 Sep 08 '26

No, it's the feeling knowing it should have gone to a calf but it goes to me instead.

-3

u/Muted_Buy8386 Sep 08 '26

And if you've never gone to Japan and enjoyed horse meat sashimi, that's your loss. Truly.

2

u/eljudio42 Sep 08 '26

Then you'd have no choice to become vegetarian cause all the animals would be gone. šŸ˜‚

3

u/Muted_Buy8386 Sep 08 '26

Then I will die happy and clogged with cholesterol.

11

u/RyanEatsHisVeggies Sep 08 '26

Vegan for the win though. Eggs and dairy are still tied to this industry of exploitation, abuse, suffering, and slaughter. Vegetarianism is a great start, but male chicks and calves are culled by the billions every year too, and the females have to be forcibly impregnated and kept in unnaturally confined spaces for the rest of their lives.

3

u/Blablasnow Sep 08 '26

Im all for vegan but since im getting downvoted to oblivion when i mention this I tried vegetarian this time

-11

u/C-D_legacy10 Sep 08 '26

There is no slaughtering for dairy and eggs

10

u/a1c4pwn Sep 08 '26

you should probably look into what the dairy industry does with the babies for whom the milk was made, or what the egg industry does with the half of all chicks that won't grow up to lay eggs.

They kill them. Male chicks are dumped live into a meat grinder, while dairy cow's children are ripped from their mothers, usually to either be chained up for the entirety of their short lives before being killed for veal, or to be regularly forced to be impregnated as dairy cows themselves, where they'll make it to late adolescence before being killed.Ā  Ā

Eggs and dairy, as industries, are unsustainable without mass slaughter.

-6

u/C-D_legacy10 Sep 08 '26

No need to , I know how they operate and you definitely are fed by the propaganda machine

6

u/Broad_Bill7791 Sep 09 '26

Big vegetable corporations and their propaganda.

1

u/jackster31415 Sep 09 '26

Great sources you gave there

7

u/RyanEatsHisVeggies Sep 08 '26

So what do they do with the male chicks and male calves? Let them live out their lives?

(Hint: I already know the answer and have the statistics if you want them from me instead of googling it.)

-11

u/C-D_legacy10 Sep 08 '26

Eggs being consumed do not turn into chicks

12

u/RyanEatsHisVeggies Sep 08 '26

And who lay the eggs? Female chickens. How do you get female chickens? Let eggs hatch. What happens when they hatch male?

4

u/Acceptable-Drive3781 Sep 08 '26

Why is it that dairy cows produce milk so often anyway?

5

u/VeganMortgageAdviser Sep 08 '26

They're constantly pregnant. They'll give birth to 3, maybe 4 calves and then their bodies give out. They stop producing milk, they are then killed.

3

u/Acceptable-Drive3781 Sep 08 '26

They're constantly pregnant

Certainly they're not doing this naturally on their own free will...

-3

u/C-D_legacy10 Sep 08 '26 edited Sep 08 '26

Not constantly pregnant, you’re showing your ignorance on the subject.
They were pregnant, they’re mammals, produce milk after giving birth, they will / can produce milk up to 2 years after one birth, Their bodies will cut milk production naturally and cow will go back into heat,

4

u/RyanEatsHisVeggies Sep 08 '26 edited Sep 08 '26

What about "their mammals?"

What about any of what you said makes it ethical to forcefully confine and inseminate other creatures to force them to be pregnant and produce milk only to take their babies away and either condemn them to the same fate or death?

0

u/C-D_legacy10 Sep 08 '26

You don’t have to consume. You can be a keyboard warrior all you want, you are not ending the industry

5

u/RyanEatsHisVeggies Sep 08 '26

Emotional? What? While you're the one using ad hominems?

What makes the quote an "asshole quote"?

What empirical effect could soy be having anywhere here?

The commentors before me that I replied to were lamenting how this system of exploitation "is fucked" in their own words and were contemplating how to mitigate the harm done by it—if that is the expressed goal, them how is veganism not the answer?

You haven't been able to show anything I've said was wrong. Now, point out the emotional response, is it in the room with us?

You can do that with plants! Even some athletes at the Olympics are vegan, and they certainly need better foods than you or I

Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Magnus Carlsen, and David Goggins are not vegans. I guess there's a reason why those vegans can't be the best.

Putting David Goggins there is hilarious.

But only 1% of the population is vegan, of course the probability is higher that people at the top of sports (or anything) aren’t vegan. That’s just statistics

Biology as well.

lol, why vegan? Are my bees being harmed for harvesting honey? Are my ducks suffering because I eat their eggs?

Where do you draw the line? Many mushrooms and plants have shown signs of intelligence/pain avoidance/survival mechanisms. Why do you eat those?

I assume you know that to grow plants in the same soil over years you kind of need some stuff derived from animals for plant and ground fertility. Obviously we could GMO or use science and money to reduce that need. I would rather my money for that go to actual dying or starving people instead.

humans developed their brain and intelligence due to consumption of meat. This kinda thing, tho sad is necesary till we figure out lab based meat. Perhaps in another few decades lap based meat will be same as animal meat.

u/noXi0uz Sep 08 '26

science disagrees. You can live perfectly healthy without any animal products and vegans are even healthier on average than the non-vegans.

science definitely disagrees with vegans and vegetarians diet.

it is so brutally enlightening to see people be so adamantly incorrect and willfully ignorant about a subject you have extensive knowledge about. You could not be more wrong.

1

u/jackster31415 Sep 09 '26

Imma need some sources on that

1

u/VeganMortgageAdviser Sep 08 '26

Actually, in correct. Increased consumption of meat is a very recent thing.

-19

u/Maleficent-Fee-9194 Sep 08 '26

Nope. That thing will change only if we are forced by laws.
It's like using paper straws etc.
Also meat is cheaper.

22

u/Individual_Isopod411 Sep 08 '26

Meat is definitely more expensive than vegetables.

16

u/dissonaut69 Sep 08 '26

Meat is also much more expensive than lentils and tofu.

6

u/Southlinch Sep 08 '26

and thats taking into account the absurd subsidies

-2

u/Maleficent-Fee-9194 Sep 09 '26

You can't eat vegs only. It's nothing affordable for me here. Tbh I only eat chicken. Don't really like other meat taste n texture. It's disgusting.

1

u/Individual_Isopod411 Sep 13 '26

Oh no you definitely can only eat vegetables and plants. Im not talking raw vegetables, but even then you can just eat lentils, rice, salads, tofu, tempeh, mushrooms... there are so many food items that arent meat, all of them cheaper.

22

u/ceaseful Sep 08 '26

Only you are ultimately responsible for your own consumption of animal products

You don't have to wait for laws to force you to make a positive change

And dont forget that in China torturing animals for fun is perfectly legal because there are no animal welfare laws

2

u/AeneasVII Sep 08 '26

While it's legal, the majority of the Chinese people want animal welfare laws. The government just have not implemented anything yet

1

u/fabulous_eyes1548 Sep 10 '26

You're talking about the US where dog eating and dogĀ  fighting competitions still thrive.

1

u/CheckMyProfileforArt Sep 10 '26

Brother in China they have sites where you pay tokens to "boil this cat", "cut its limps" "skin it alive" and the most horrific shit a human mind can conjure and this is legal. Last mont 4 teenage kids torture puppies to death in front of their mother(dog) and then put their mother on fire and they were laughing, those teenagers face no prosecution and their hometown protected them from the backlash from pro-animal right Chinese.

There's both a ton more disregard about animals and the fact torturing them is legal makes the situation not even comparable with anything that happens in the west

1

u/redshirt1972 Sep 08 '26

To be fair, that’s how Chinese people live in cities too so …

1

u/CriticalMassacre Sep 08 '26

It'a shortcut to the next cross-species pandemic. I know that much.

1

u/jaabbb Sep 09 '26

And it’s only going to get progressively worse from here

Damnthatsdepressing is more like it.
