When I was 17, a friend of mine cut open the side of his foot from heel to big toe while we were at the lake. I was a lifeguard, but had never had to use anything beyond a bandaid for first aid.
Since we were rural and it was going to take an hour to get to the hospital we decided to take some time to clean it up, put on some butterfly closures, and wrap it before heading out.
The nurse AND the doctor both told me I did an excellent job with the doctor even asking my friend if he could take a photo of it to use in his first aid classes he did! They also gave me a bag of things to refill my first aid kit with!!
