Why are Brits so into boxing?

I've noticed that your average Brit tends to be a boxing fan and everyone is always looking forward to the next Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua fight.

In comparison, much of the US has moved on from boxing. The whole of Europe is barely into boxing except for Russia/Ukraine and much of Europe was never into boxing. For example, a country like France or Italy does not have any boxing culture and it's seen as a trashy low class sport in those countries.

Yet a lot of Brits love this sport. Where did this come from? Boxing in much of Europe is seen as a low class sport.

Politics If there is racism or anti-immigrant sentiment in the UK, then why is no one talking about the refugees from Ukraine and Hong Kong?

There are 200k refugees from ukraine and 170k from hong kong according to official data. Yet, I haven't heard any problem about them. Why is that?

Why men stare?

What does it mean when a man deliberately watches you as you walk towards him in a corridor, maintaining eye contact until you pass each other? I understand that occasionally making eye contact can be a coincidence, but this feels different. It’s like he notices me from a distance and keeps looking directly at me as I walk towards him, continuing until we are right beside each other and pass. This happens almost every day. Sometimes he smiles at me, raises his eyebrows when he sees me, or asks if I’m okay. What confuses me is how deliberate and consistent it seems. What message are you trying to send when you repeatedly look at the same woman like this? Are you attracted to her, trying to get her attention, or simply acknowledging her? And if you want to get her attention, why make it so obvious through prolonged eye contact without actually saying anything direct? Men, I’d genuinely like to understand what goes through your mind when you behave this way.

Would my husband qualify for citizenship?

My husband's mother was born in Scotland. She then moved to Canada and became a Canadian citizen in the 1970s, forfeiting her British citizenship (from what she has told us.) Could he (born in Canada in 1980) still potentially qualify for dual citizenship under the descent laws? I can't seem to find a clear answer about if descent laws apply to parent's current citizenship or their birthplace. I've looked but cannot find this specific scenario so links to relevent government pages would be super helpful. Thanks folks!

Edit: I've been slowly adding info as questions come up.

An aside: we've asked her, we have a good relationship with her. Some of the confusion about some details comes from her old age and the time frame being so far removed, not from lack of contact or trust. I'm gonna try again to ask if she actually forfeited the citizenship or just believes she did when she got the Canadian one in the 1970s.

I follow a lot of American commentators however I want to shift away from this & back to Britain, Europe, & the commonwealth. Do you have any political commentators you like that follows these regions & are less overall focus on US politics?

Culture What’s with the over-presentation of Black and white couples in ads/media ? Why not Indian and white couple or other minorities ?

Anyone noticed how our adverts and other media has a very heavy emphasis on mixed race couples. That is fine but why are these couples always Black and White couples dominantly ?

Black people seem to be overrepresented on British telly and ads, than say Indians who ALSO have a long, rich history with Britain.

Are other minorities not important enough to show “ diversity “ ?

Britain is more Indian than Black statistically ( 8% vs 4% ) but our TV and ads will make you think it’s more black.

FYI I don’t have anything against Black and white couples. Just an observation and I’m curious.

Culture Are you a dessert household or no dessert household?

Me and my partner have been having a heated debate recently about whether having dessert after dinner is normal.

Growing up, my family would have dessert after most evening meals, so to me it was just a normal staple. My partner, on the other hand, says he never really had dessert growing up. He says that instead he’d have what he called picky bits like some strawberries or a biscuit and not often.

It’s got me wondering how common this actually is. Were you raised in a household where dessert was a regular thing, or was it something you only had on special occasions?

Politics What do you think of the new wave of South Asian service staff?

I feel torn when writing this because I don’t like singling out people, but I have recently moved back to London and have been taken aback by the sheer amount of newly migrated South Asian service workers in London, especially Indian. Every single place within zone 1-3 seems to have employees who clearly weren’t born here, mostly men. I left a few years after covid and never felt this, most south asians working were locals or maybe some aunties and uncles who are a bit older. But it’s a whole different vibe, service is leas personal, english is worse, barely hear any brits working normal jobs anymore.

I understand it’s the Boris wave and the consequence of Brexit, but the UK seems like a totally different place than when I came 10 years ago. Not necessarily bad but also I feel much less connected to the UK. It’s only really the pub, a local chicken shop or maybe some bougie business where it still feels like London.

I’m honestly not trying to make this a race thing, but more a culture thing, it just feels less welcoming. I also hear so many bad things about the job market and young people being unemployed and I can’t help think that those jobs would be perfect for people inbetween jobs or starting out, or part-time. If anything, we’re just keeping wages low because instead of forcing employers (through unions), to pay more the uk is just importing cheap labour

Also not here for some random racist or discriminatory comments, honestly value real answers, whether political or personal

People TFL bus etiquette?

Saw this on the bus ride and this lady had her bare feet on another seat and was talking loudly on her phone on speaker in a different language. I wanted to call her out but wasn’t sure if she understood English and feared of being harassed. What would you do when people exhibit anti-social behaviors like this?

People who grew up in small towns then moved away, how did you go about leaving?

I'm 22, turning 23 in a couple of months. Live in a former industrial town in Cheshire, wasn't born here just moved here when I was a kid. Went to university in manchester but had to come back cause I didn't land a job after graduating.

To be completely honest I hate this town. I cannot see any future for myself round these parts and I desperately want out. It feels like a black hole though. Almost like everything about this place was engineered to stop people from moving away.

There's basically no full time work, what does exist is senior roles that require really specific qualifications or jobs in teaching/care (which if you ask me is something you should never go into out of necessity but that's a different topic). And the busses don't start running till after 9pm which makes commuting impossible unless you drive.

I've had to take up doing morning shifts at a small business, which is good work but I only do 10 hours a week, at minimum wage. When you're earning that little saving up for things like a car or relocation costs becomes nigh on impossible. Which keeps you where you are. With the cost of living at the moment you need a much bigger financial safety net for relocating than you would have even just 10 years ago. And trying to get a job that can actually pay rent (stable full time work with consistent hours and income) is like pulling teeth. ESPECIALLY when you don't live where you're applying to already.

It feels like my life is on hold as long as i stay here. There's nothing this place can offer me. I want to be enjoying nightlife and going on dates to art exhibitions not just stuck in the home > gym > home > repeat loop I've been in.

(Just for context in case someone asks or suggests any of these: I don't have any extended family in other parts of the country i can stay with and none of my friends have their own places so I can't couch surf. I'm not interested in doing a working holiday abroad or joining the army. And my degree is in the arts, not very employable but I had fun doing it)

Any thoughts? Id really like to hear a success story from someone who was in a similar position to me and made it out. Gives me something to aspire to.

I've noticed Brits would rather put themselves through absolute hell than risk an awkward conversation 😂

Come on, what's the worst situation you've ever politely suffered through?

r/AskBrits • • 1d ago

Lennox Lewis, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton. How would you compared their storied careers at their respective weights? Would personally put Calzaghe at 1, Lewis a close second and Hatton as a still decent third.

Politics What do you think about the current protests in France right now?

Thumbnail gallery

What are your thoughts on this situation right now? It’s exploded over the weekend, 58 years since the student revolution of 1968. Seems like the French protests have taken centre stage in the wider Gen Z protests occurring across the world, and which have finally hit Europe this summer. What could this mean for Britain?

Anyone else receiving threatening text messages since the ASOS breach?

I've been receiving threatening texts about making someone lose money and that they will turn up at my door to make things right.

I usually get the odd spam call now and then, but never aggressive text messages, and it all coincidentally started a couple days after the ASOS hack.

What we going to do?

We've squandered most of our worlds resources - like a kid with too many toys lobbing them out the pram. We can't stop warring despite the causes of it still being more to do with geo politics than anything else. We treat our elderly like they're an inconvenience but barring early death, we'll be one some day. We treat our kids even worse, not putting boundaries in about how to be a decent human. kids pretty much hate anyone else even their own peers. When dud carrying a knife and gun become the norm? When did manners go out of fashion? What can we do as a society to help fix this shit show because if we don't do something soon, it will I fear be too late for us all.

How can I live in the UK?

I'm an aspiring actress, with no real experiences outside of school plays, theatre seminars. My parents applied me for an agency way before when I was in elementary school. I always knew I had a passion for it, and I still do now. I'm currently a third year at University in Japan, (I moved here permanently after covid and have been at the Philippines for most of my years, hence the English. Half half of said countries.)
I just can't imagine myself working corporate and speaking in a language I'm not fluent enough for. I want to live out my dreams, help a girl out <3
