Canceled Prime today and got it refunded
For 15 years, we’ve subscribed to Prime, genuinely enjoyed it, and made full use of its benefits. Back when we just needed a reliable, convenient way to buy everyday essentials, Amazon delivered without a hitch. We even ordered our very first box of diapers from the maternity ward and had them at our doorstep before running through the ones the hospital gave us. We were hooked, and our order volume grew year after year.
Back then, customer service chats connected to domestic representatives who resolved issues in minutes. Over time, that support was offshored - frustrating at times, but at least you were still talking to a human. This year, however, Amazon's aggressive push into automated AI support broke the system entirely. Whenever an issue arises, you get trapped in an endless, circular bot loop that wastes your time and resolves nothing.
Shipping and delivery have fallen off a cliff as corner-cutting took over. Items now ship unprotected in their retail packaging with a label slapped on the front, single orders get split into multiple disjointed shipments, and damaged or missing packages have become routine. We've had deliveries dropped off on the other side of town, incorrect quantities, and wrong items entirely - including a stick of desktop RAM that arrived as a hair tie, which I posted here.
The breaking point was realizing that clip-able coupons and promotions for items sold directly by Amazon completely vanished from our account. We contacted customer service repeatedly over three months asking for an escalation, getting nowhere. Without those coupons, we started cross-shopping at Target and Walmart and confirmed what we suspected: we were paying higher prices on Amazon.
Following a recommendation in another thread, we emailed the executive customer relations team (Andy Jassy's email). Someone behind the scenes adjusted our account, and the coupons instantly returned. Fast-forward two months: the discounts disappeared again. When we reached back out to the executive team, we received a canned brush-off claiming promotions are "targeted and regionalized," and that we would see them if eligible. My follow-up asking for further clarification was completely ignored.
This isn't a total farewell to what was once a customer-obsessed company, but we are going to be cutting our usage way back relying on free shipping without prime. This might actually help us cut back on our purchases of junk items sometimes that's useful but not exactly necessary.
