Weekly /r/ASU Discussion- October 19, 2026

Please use this thread to ask any random questions you have that may not warrant their own posts, or if you want opinions on something non-ASU related (as long as its SFW).

All Sun Devil Rewards answers and key words will need to be kept within this weekly discussions post as to not overwhelm the sub.

Please feel free to use this thread for any housing needs/inquires/concerns as well!

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest activity.

Have any employers had any luck with ASUs replacement for Handshake?

When we used Handshake we would get 20-50 applicants rather quickly. Since using the new system we get maybe 2 students and theyre not within the degree we posted for.

Is anyone else experiencing the same?

Canvas videos not working?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Ok so I have a session B I course which started recently right. And I was trying to go watch the lecture videos so I could get started on my first discussion post. However the video was unplayable. Like there was no play button. it just looked like a blurry screenshot of a zoom recording. Which was super weird. So I did the tech support chat thingy since in the syllabus and syllabus quiz it said contact tech support first before instructor. So I did that and talked with someone who said I gotta transfer you. However, the wait for that was kinda long and I had to go so I couldn’t follow through with it. So I ended up emailing the instructor with no response. I have tried on my phone, my iPad, and my laptop. All with same issue. I even updated the canvas app thinking that had something to do with it. What else can I do?

I’m scared about the final case study report we have to do. The professors make it sound like it’s supposed to be really hard.

Am i the only one that hates going to ASU?

I truly love the university setting but arizona state feels like academic hell. I’ve only attended for 2 semesters but every professor i’ve had but one has been genuinely terrible. Bad orators, doesn’t care at all, largely unapproachable. In my first math class here (MAT117) the professor literally sat in the corner and let the TA’s wander around for an hour like prison guards because even though the class is in-person it was conducted entirely through ALEKs (terrible system to learn math from).

I know you all will reply back with skill issue but I’m genuinely having a horrible time. I want to transfer universities but ASU is basically the only major option.. please dont hold back in the replies

Question about FASFA with Session A and B

I started at ASU online in Jan as a guest student and thus didn't have access to FASFA. I transferred for session B and took I believe 6 or 7 credits and got half of the FASFA I was eligible for, which I felt like made sense. I had called and spoke with someone about taking classes for the summer and asked if continuing to only pay for half the semester at a time would affect my FASFA now that I was a degree-seeking student. She said that if I enrolled in half the credits needed to be a full time student for session A, I would receive half of my expected aid, could pay for that session, and then I could enroll in session B after session A's payment deadline, receive the second half of my aid, and pay for it session B's deadline. I didn't end up doing it for the summer or fall, but there is no way in hell I can pay for the upcoming spring semester upfront, and I'm not a fan of paying extra to set up a payment plan.

I'm enrolled in 7 credits for session A. My FASFA had originally shown that I was getting the same amount of aid for the spring as I did for the fall--I thought was perhaps a bit odd that I was getting full aid when I was only enrolled for seven credits, but I figured they would still only disperse half the amount for session A. I probably last checked that about two weeks ago. But today I log on to take a look and it is showing me I am getting $0. Excuse me???

I found this page which seems to confirm about what I had been told about getting partial aid if I was less than a full time student, so I'm confused and kind of freaked. I'm trying to call, but I'm sure how you all know how it is--I selected a call back this morning, never heard anything, so I've been sitting on the phone for an hour and a half and still have more than 200 people in front of me.

Does anyone know how FASFA should look if you are only enrolling in half the semester at a time??? Or why it is showing me I am getting $0 in FASFA??? Is that write and I misunderstood the article + the rep I took to??? god knows how long it'll be until I get ahold with the financial aid office so I thought I may as well ask reddit while I'm waiting

Anyone else ever dropped a course because of financial reasons?

Legit just dropped a class and realized it was last day for withdraw without being penalized. I was doing one of my assignments for a CIS class and realized i had not purchased the required course materials yet (no big deal to me since there was a discount code provided for the ebook+Lab….me assuming it wasn’t costly).

So i immediately go through the purchase link and when i saw the price, my eyes widened and Im like “Ok lemme put the code and see how much it’ll drop”…..yeah nope, so me thinking “maybe the lab itself will be cheap” and come to find out it’s the same price as the combo package discounted. inserts skull emoji. (it was $120 for reference).

it’s prob not a lot to some of yall but for someone that’s under the SCAP and barista pay….$120 kinda steep so i told myself “Yeah i’ll try it again next semester when my bread is more up by then.” (yes i double checked for availability and it worked in my favor luckily).

Anyways thank you for reading my little rant lolol. May all of yall have a great rest of the semester. <3

Anyone get into ASU's online MS with a GPA under 3.0?

I applied to the online MS in Regulatory Science with the food safety concentration and I'm trying to get a realistic idea of my chances.

The listed minimum is a 3.00 in the last 60 hours of your bachelor's. My undergrad GPA was 2.34, and my last couple of years were actually my weakest. My degree is in food science, and I've been working in food safety and quality for about five years now, so the program lines up with what I already do.

The application only asked for transcripts and a resume, no statement or letters, so there isn't really a place to explain the GPA.

If anyone has been through something similar:

  1. Has anyone been admitted to this program (or another ASU Online master's) below a 3.0? Was it provisional, and what were the conditions?

  2. Did work experience actually make a difference, or did it mostly come down to the number?

  3. Did reaching out to the program advisor help?

Looking for reassurance and honest experiences.Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Mat114

Hey! I have to take MAT114 and am considering taking it through CGCC or Mesa community college because math really isn’t my strong suit. I tried taking MAT117 at ASU and hated it so am looking for a better alternative ( i don’t need Mat117 anymore only 114. )

BEST PLACE TO TAKE MAT114?

advice for vague class?

I’d like to ask some general advice for the situation I’m in for one of my classes without naming it cuz I’m lowkey embarrassed even though I’ve already posted here before about this class (also note I’m a freshman so please explain resources/etc in detail)

Ok so this class is a lecture class where we basically go 1, do the readings and discussion board, 2, go to class and listen to lecture and take notes, 3, do study assignment for exam, and 4, take exam (long answer/paragraph format)

I did pretty bad on the first exam (there are 4-5 in total I think) (in my defense the next class he literally bragged about how many people usually fail the first exam) and due to him not grading a majority of assignments, I’m now on the verge of failing and I’m scared that I didn’t do much better on the recent second exam.

So what I’m really asking is if going to office hours or even tutoring would help, and what could. Like I feel like in class when someone has a question or is adding onto the conversation he answers them so strangely like he wants to be so superior to us and it always rubs me the wrong way and in emails he is very vague and annoying so I’m not sure what he could provide me with outside of class. His TAs seem nice but they never really interact with us and seem to be more of his personal assistants and light switches than people I could ask questions to (especially since we never have time to review in class)

As for tutoring, I’m not even sure where I’d start because I’ve never looked into the tutoring resources and I’m not even sure what I could do that I’m not doing now. The exams are basically testing out memorization despite his argument that he wants us to understand the material even though he wants us to basically directly quote what he said in class and very specific details of different topics or even people.

And btw he barely addresses what’s going to be on the exams and the study guide assignments are entirely student led and we basically go into each exam blind unless he tells us any kind of hint towards what may end up on the test

Barrett priority

so me and my roomates are sophomores and currently live at vista del sol and since housing selection for barrett is coming up. We were thinking of a 3 bed so villas would have that but we also are open to a 4 bed in villas. we like the floor plans in villa compared to vista bc the villas has a deluxe and is closer to our classes.

so for choosing junior year housing can we select villas if we are in barrett or can we not?

5 career resources available to ASU students and alumni

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

We put together a quick carousel of career resources that you have access to as a Sun Devil. A lot of students tell us they wish they'd known about these sooner, so here's the rundown:

1. CareerLink is ASU's all-in-one career platform. You can search for internships and jobs, connect with employers, and keep track of everything in one place. It's open to students and alumni.

2. Professional clubs and fraternities are one of the easiest ways to build career skills, meet people in your field and get hands-on experience before graduation. There are groups for almost every major.

3. Career coaches and advising can help whether you're still choosing a major or getting ready for a big interview. Advisors review resumes, run mock interviews and help you build a networking plan. Appointments are available in person or virtually.

4. Career fairs bring students, alumni and employers together in one room (or one Zoom). They're a great way to find internships and full-time jobs, even if you're only there to practice talking to recruiters.

5. Workshops from Career Services cover resumes, interviewing, networking and career exploration. They're short, practical and a low-pressure place to start if you're not sure where to begin.

For everything in one place, check this out

Current Sun Devils and alumni, which of these actually helped you land an internship or job? Any tips for students using them for the first time? 👇

Hope this helps! – Suhi, ASU Admission Services

I work about 30-40 hours weekly and just finished MAE241, MAE384, PHI330, SWU349 and MEE351 and did find myself at some points overwhelmed. I liked the courses I've taken but wanted to know if my upcoming semester is too much?

Why does this random gen ed class for a maroon credit more time consuming than half of my current classes?

This is lowkey going to be a vent post, so bear with me here.

I chose a class called food and culture (session B) to fulfill a gen ed credit and it immediately kicks off with over an hour of videos to watch without transcripts (I physically cannot sit and listen to a bunch of unengaging videos that get longer and longer); they include a summary that barely covers what is actually discussed in each video. Then on top of those there are multiple long readings as well as yellowdig posts and engagement. I am really NOT enjoying the fact that some random course I'm forced to take that has absolutely nothing to do with my studies is somehow more time consuming than MOST OF MY ACTUAL MAJOR. My weekdays are too busy to chip away at the lectures so I'll have to slog through the entire week's workload on the weekends.
